ViziQuer: A Tool to Explore and Query SPARQL Endpoints
2011
The presented tool uses a novel approach to explore and query a SPARQL endpoint. The tool is simple to use as a user needs only to enter an address of a SPARQL endpoint of one's interest. The tool will extract and visualize graphically the data schema of the endpoint. The user will be able to overview the data schema and use it to construct a SPARQL query according to the data schema. The tool can be downloaded from http://viziquer.lumii.lv. There is also additional information and help on how to use it in practice.
Export of Relational Databases to RDF Databases by Model Transformations
2011
The Semantic Web is a Web of Data. To fulfill this web with data we need methods how to transfer business data from existing relational databases. In most cases, textual mapping languages are used for the specification of correspondences between relational DB schema and OWL ontology. These languages generally are rather awkward and not well-suited for the specification of mappings in cases when there is a substantial semantic gap between the source ER schema and the target OWL ontology. At the same time specification of mappings is a classical use case for graphical model transformation languages. In our previous work [10] we have proposed a new, model transformation-based method for the sp…
Large Scale Knowledge Matching with Balanced Efficiency-Effectiveness Using LSH Forest
2017
Evolving Knowledge Ecosystems were proposed to approach the Big Data challenge, following the hypothesis that knowledge evolves in a way similar to biological systems. Therefore, the inner working of the knowledge ecosystem can be spotted from natural evolution. An evolving knowledge ecosystem consists of Knowledge Organisms, which form a representation of the knowledge, and the environment in which they reside. The environment consists of contexts, which are composed of so-called knowledge tokens. These tokens are ontological fragments extracted from information tokens, in turn, which originate from the streams of information flowing into the ecosystem. In this article we investigate the u…
SILKNOWViz: Spatio-Temporal Data Ontology Viewer
2019
Interactive visualization of spatio-temporal data is a very active area that has experienced remarkable advances in the last decade. This is due to the emergence of fields of research such as big data and advances in hardware that allow better analysis of information. This article describes the methodology followed and the design of an open source tool, which in addition to interactively visualizing spatio-temporal data that are represented in an ontology, allows the definition of what to visualize and how to do it. The tool allows selecting, filtering and visualizing in a graphical way the entities of the ontology with spatiotemporal data, as well as the instances related to them. The grap…
Cognition in HCI : An Ongoing Story
2009
The field of human computer interaction (HCI) is deeply rooted in cognitive science. But can cognitive science still contribute to the newest developments? This article introduces the recent trends towards “embodied cognition.” Then research on image schemas and their metaphorical extensions is reviewed as an example of how understanding a special branch of embodied cognition can be useful to HCI. Special emphasis is placed on the validity of the theory and its practicability in different phases of the user interface design cycle. It is concluded that cognition can still contribute to current HCI and that the dialogue between the different schools of thought is beneficial to the field.
epiPATH: an information system for the storage and management of molecular epidemiology data from infectious pathogens.
2007
Abstract Background Most research scientists working in the fields of molecular epidemiology, population and evolutionary genetics are confronted with the management of large volumes of data. Moreover, the data used in studies of infectious diseases are complex and usually derive from different institutions such as hospitals or laboratories. Since no public database scheme incorporating clinical and epidemiological information about patients and molecular information about pathogens is currently available, we have developed an information system, composed by a main database and a web-based interface, which integrates both types of data and satisfies requirements of good organization, simple…
Cognitive Negotiation Schemata in the IT Industries of Japan and Finland
2015
The existing literature emphasizes the importance of negotiation skills in the field of IT. However, negotiation and negotiation styles in the IT industry have received limited attention. This original empirical research compares the negotiation schemata of Finnish and Japanese IT business people. The study identifies negotiation schemata used in one or both culture groups. Negotiators with greater experience and power in the negotiation process command more schemata. However, neither population enjoys the full range of negotiation schemata. Business negotiators in or out of IT and these cultures may benefit from knowing the schemata and the results of matching and mismatching. peerReviewed
A Data Model for Describing and Exchanging Personal Achieved Learning Outcomes (PALO)
2010
Employers seek people that match particular qualifications and graduates seek jobs that match their qualifications. This market is currently managed primarily using paper certificates and heterogeneous university management systems that capture achieved learning outcomes as well as corporate information systems that capture required qualifications. In light of trends toward increased student mobility, employability and lifelong learning, this situation is less than satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, the authors propose a schema that facilitates interoperable storage and management of Personal Achieved Learning Outcomes (PALO) based on a common data model. This paper presents use case s…
Model independent assertions for integration of heterogeneous schemas
1992
Due to the proliferation of database applications, the integration of existing databases into a distributed or federated system is one of the major challenges in responding to enterprises' information requirements. Some proposed integration techniques aim at providing database administrators (DBAs) with a view definition language they can use to build the desired integrated schema. These techniques leave to the DBA the responsibility of appropriately restructuring schema elements from existing local schemas and of solving inter-schema conflicts. This paper investigates the assertion-based approach, in which the DBA's action is limited to pointing out corresponding elements in the schemas an…
Halévy, fugue d’école und basse donnée
2021
