A Taxonomy as a Vehicle for Learning
2009
In this article, we describe the development of a classification system providing a framework for analysis of, and communication about, a subgroup of learning objects. The objects we consider are highly visual, animated, interactive, and mathematics-related, and we call them VaniMaps. Secondly, we discuss the use of the system. In the first phase, the development was based on literature studies and discussions on examples of VaniMaps. In the second phase, the classification system was tested by students and their responses were analyzed to identify possible improvements. Now, the system is developed further based on experience gained while using it for different purposes. We see several pos…

Correction to: Ernst Mach’s „Bekehrung“ zum Atomismus/Ernst Mach’s “Conversion” to Atomism – A Dialogue Between Mach and Popper-Lynkeus by Otto Blüh
2019
Otto Bluh was a great admirer of Ernst Mach’s and contributed a number of papers to Machian scholarship. It is believed that he wrote this skit around 1966, perhaps to coincide with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mach’s death and most likely for Bluh’s own amusement, as it was never published. It consists of an imaginary conversation in pseudo-Viennese dialect, between Mach and his friend, Josef Popper-Lynkeus based on the questionable tale of Mach’s conversion to atomism. This paper includes a brief introduction to the skit as well as its transcription and translation into English, published for the first time. It was also dramatized for the first time in occasion of the Ernst …
Introduction—Feelings Matter
2020
Emotions are a hot topic in design, human–computer interaction and any area of business these days. Their significance in areas in which people make choices, decisions and engage in action has been undeniable for at least the last 40 years of psychology and consumer scholarship. What once was an extremely contested, fuzzy and (almost) easily scientifically avoidable area, is now at the centre of everyone’s interest. In an era of cognitive computing, artificial intelligence (so-called learning and thinking machines), and optimization, all attention is placed on what makes us human, and the ways in which human thought actually operates. This emotional logic, intentionality and consciousness i…

2019
The industry of sport currently has a big impact on our society, in areas as diverse as economics, mass media, health or politics. A study field that appears to have experienced a substantive growth over a short period of time. How technology-based firms become also highly innovative firms? The role of knowledge, technological and managerial capabilities, and entrepreneurs’ …
2019
To what extent is the likelihood that a Technology-Based Firm – TBF – turns into a Technology-Based and Highly Innovative Firm – TB&InnF – is influenced by technical capabilities or managerial capabilities and education background? We analyse this question using a novel data panel assembled for 326 Spanish industrial firms, along the period 1998–2014. Our findings show the probability of becoming a TB&InnF growths when firms are able to accumulate a high endowment of knowledge and technological capabilities, and a managerial team with experience, a strong power position and previous technical or managerial education background. Marcion: A New Perspective on his Life, Theology, and Impact
2010
The main argument of the present article is that previous scholarship has turned Marcion’s exegesis of Scripture upside down. He did not find the inspiration for his doctrine in the teachings of the Apostle Paul, it is the Old Testament and its portrait of an inconsistent, vengeful and cruel God which forms the centre of his theology. Marcion does not understand the Old Testament in the light of the New, he interprets the New Testament in the light of the Old.
Translation and dealing with “the other” in scholarly research and publishing:
2022
Although languages other than English, along with various forms of translation, are intrinsic to multilingual researchers’ scholarly activities, they generally remain less visible in English-medium publications. In this discussion paper, I explore this topic from a broader sociopolitical perspective by looking at the use and function of translation in various stages of research and writing for publication. Drawing on recent studies on multilingualism in academia and my own experience as a teacher of research communication, I argue that in the academic context, translation cannot be seen as a mere linguistic act or a communication tool as it is inextricably tied to complex and multilayered c…
