ABSTRACT: The presen…
The present paper concerns a didactical proposal about cinematics, developed during the TFA (a one-year program for secondary school teacher training) which, according to the author, is spendable in every school which is endowed with the necessary laboratory equipment.
Inquiry Based Science Education, pre-service primary school teacher education.
Children’s Interactions Within a Virtual Reality Environment for Learning Chemistry
2017
This paper presents a virtual reality based solution for learning. Multimodal interactions are proposed to support students’ engagement through active experimentation and reflective observation. Students tasks are provided within an immersive virtual outdoor environment created using a human-centred design approach. Junior high school teachers and students between ages 14 and 16 were involved in design and test activities. Observations, video recordings, and interviews were used in data collection. Three interaction modalities were provided and tested: visual, auditory and kinesthetic/tangible interactions. The students involved in user testing showed great interest to learn in such an envi…
Defining and Operationalizing Appropriation for Science Learning
2014
The overarching goal of this paper is to contribute to our understanding of the interplay between students’ disciplinary engagement and their identity construction. The term appropriation, borrowed from scholars in linguistics and education, was chosen to capture this broader sense of productive learning that sits at the nexus of disciplinary engagement and identity. Appropriation implies productive learning including deep conceptual understanding, but it also involves a reflexive process of populating scientific discourse with personal intentions, purposes and tastes that allow a student to embody scientific discourse and concepts in a way that is authentic and personal. The core aim of th…
Discounted Prototyping of Virtual Reality Solutions for Science Education
2017
Science education requires experimental work for learners to achieve the intended learning outcomes, which sometimes involve abstract concepts by nature. Advances in digital technology can help learners to undertake experimental work, which would otherwise be costly, either due to the scarcity of laboratory equipment or safety requirements. However, one of the major concerns resides into how to design usable learning solutions from the users’ perspective. That would require the involvement of users at all stages of design and development process, even if the technology itself could still be in its infancy. It can be very helpful to present the new design concepts to potential users at a ver…
Should the teaching of biological evolution include the origin of life?
2010
The development of mainstream research on the origin of life as an outcome of Darwinian evolution is discussed. It is argued that prebiotic evolution and the origin of life should not be excluded from the syllabus and should be part of classes on biological evolution, and that the transition from non-living to living matter is best understood when seen as part of evolutionary biology. The wide acceptance of evolutionary approaches to the study of the emergence of life in European and Latin American countries is discussed.
On Participating in Communities of Practice
2004
This chapter examines the social practices of three classroom communities where pedagogy in the learning of science draws on the socio-cultural perspective. The pedagogical framework for science education, defined in this study as a participatory approach, views learning as a collective process of meaning-making situated in cultural contexts (e.g. Cole, 1996; Sfard, 1998; Wells; 1999). There are three focuses of interest, namely, the nature of role negotiation between the members of the learning community, the application of cultural tools in collective activity, and the processes of making meaning for a scientific phenomenon. The social practices of the science classroom communities are ap…
