Tristriazolotriazines with π-Conjugated Segments: Star-Shaped Fluorophors and Discotic Liquid Crystals
2012
C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines substituted with phenylene rings carrying lateral flexible alkoxy side chains were prepared via condensation/ring transformation of cyanuric chloride and tetrazoles. These star-shaped, planar compounds can form broad thermotropic mesophases. Due to the extensive π-conjugation, these compounds are highly emissive and the octupolar donor-acceptor electronic structure results in non-linear optical properties like solvatochromism. Brønstedt acids provoke halochromism of the absorption and of the fluorescence.
Factors influencing the extent of inbreeding depression: an example from scots pine
1999
Detailed studies suggest that the level of inbreeding depression may vary between populations. In a study of Scots pine from Finland, the level of inbreeding depression was much lower in northern than in southern populations. We have examined theoretically whether population genetic factors, such as the level of selfing, intensity of selection against heterozygotes or homozygotes, level of mutation, a bottleneck, finite population size, or the level of polyembryony could account for this difference. Higher selfing or stronger selection against heterozygotes in the north, both at biologically reasonable levels, appear to produce changes consistent with the observed differences and we conside…
Age and spatial structure of natural Pinus sylvestris stands in Latvia
2005
Abstract The age and spatial structure of six natural old growth Pinus sylvestris stands in Latvia were investigated, to attempt to identify retrospectively the past features of development. In each stand, one or two plots of size 200–900 m2 were established. Tree locations were mapped, stem diameter was measured, and tree age was determined from cores or by counting branch whorls. Tree distribution was assessed by Ripley's K function. A clumped spatial pattern was shown for P. sylvestris younger than 100 years. The temporal patterns of establishment could be partly linked to favourable climatic periods. The major disturbance affecting pine stands along the coast was windblown sand, which p…
Hahmojen välisiä suhteita : interfiguraalisuus Donna Tarttin romaanissa The Secret History
2017
Tutkielma käsittelee interfiguraalisuutta – intertekstuaalisuuden alalajia, joka viittaa eri teksteissä esiintyvien henkilöhahmojen välisiin suhteisiin – Donna Tarttin romaanissa The Secret History. Tarttin romaanin päähenkilöitä tarkastellaan suhteessa neljän muun romaanin henkilöhahmoihin (F. Scott Fitzgeraldin The Great Gatsby, William Goldingin Lord of the Flies, Evelyn Waugh’n Brideshead Revisited sekä Oscar Wilden The Picture of Dorian Gray). Tutkielmassa eri teksteissä esiintyvien henkilöhahmojen välisiä interfiguraalisia kytköksiä peilataan suhteessa The Secret Historyn kertojan luotettavuuteen ja romaanin keskeisiin teemoihin. Tutkimusongelmana on, millaista potentiaalia interfigur…
The power of language policy : the legal recognition of sign languages and the aspirations of deaf communities
2016
This thesis explores Sign Language Peoples’ aspirations for the legal recognition of sign languages, with specific focus on Finland and Scotland. It highlights the timely need to strengthen (in practice) and scrutinize (academically) the legal measures that have been achieved as well as their implementation – and to measure all this against the challenges of endangerment and sustaining vitality. The theoretical framework for this study is centred in language policy and planning and political theory. The research methodology draws on principles of the ethnography of language policy and uses two traditional qualitative research methods, that is, interviews and participant observation, plus de…
Origins and originality : Authenticity in the media representation of Julie Fowlis
2018
This article examines the ways in which Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis is constructed ‘authentic’ in the media. Two narratives that I call ‘narrative of origins’ and ‘narrative of professionalism’ construct her authenticity as a representative of the folk music scene. Fowlis represents the new Gaelic speaker, but is presented in terms of stereotypical imagery connected to Scotland, which portrays tradition as stagnant, quaint and in need of preservation. However, she is also presented as a professional artist, remaking and reinterpreting the tradition of a living culture that she represents. Thus, here authenticity ascribed on the artist is viewed as a cultural memory device, built on …
Blue intensity and density from northern Fennoscandian tree rings, exploring the potential to improve summer temperature reconstructions with earlywo…
2014
Abstract. Here we explore two new tree-ring parameters, derived from measurements of wood density and blue intensity (BI). The new proxies show an increase in the interannual summer temperature signal compared to established proxies, and present the potential to improve long-term performance. At high latitudes, where tree growth is mainly limited by low temperatures, radiodensitometric measurements of wood density, specifically maximum latewood density (MXD), provides a temperature proxy that is superior to that of tree-ring widths. The high cost of developing MXD has led to experimentation with a less expensive method using optical flatbed scanners to produce a new proxy, herein referred t…
This article discusses the various intellectual currents of the Spanish University in the late Fifteenth and early Sixteenth centuries: Scholasticism, Spiritualism, Nominalism, 'Lulismo' and Humanism. The primitive Comedia de Calisto y Melibea born in t…
Young Scottish National Party Members’ Perceptions of Scotland and the United Kingdom
2021
This paper explores young Scottish National Party (SNP) members’ views of Scotland and the United Kingdom. It is based on the analysis of the results of an online survey and interviews with young SNP members about their political engagement and their understanding of national identity, which we carried out from 2018 to 2020. Our study focuses especially on how the members of Young Scots for Independence (YSI) and SNP Students, the youth and student wings of the SNP, perceive the Scottish nation and the UK. This paper reflects upon the way these young people define Scottishness and Scottish society. It also discusses the role of national identity in their campaign for independence. Do they w…
