Explanations of success and failure in management learning : What can we learn from Nokia's rise and fall

2016

International audience; In this paper, we study the changing explanations of success and failure over the course of a firm's history. We build on a discursive approach that highlights the role of narrative attributions in making sense of corporate performance. Specifically, we analyze how the Nokia Corporation was framed first as a success and later as a failure and how these dimensions of performance were explained in various actors' narrative accounts. In both the success and failure accounts, our analysis revealed a striking black-and-white picture that resulted in the institutionalization of Nokia's metanarratives of success and failure. Our findings also reveal a number of discursive a…

Gendered positioning: Addressing gendered power and cultural discourses in therapeutic conversations

2016

This research examined gendered positioning in therapeutic conversations, especially in treatment of intimate partner violence (IPV). A feminist-informed reading combined with a discursive psychological approach was applied in three studies on positioning in therapeutic conversations. This reading focused on gendered positioning, gendered power and cultural discourses. Thus, the aim of this research was to examine how gender is constructed in therapeutic conversations that deal with couple relationship issues, and how the power distribution this entails is addressed in these conversations. The data consisted of videotaped and transcribed couple therapy sessions and group treatment sessions …

Narratives of femininity as means of promotion : a case study on Dove's advertisement and audience responses

2017

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten yritykset ja organisaatiot voivat hyödyntää kohderyhmiensä palautetta mainontansa kehittämisessä houkuttelevammaksi yleisöilleen. Sosiaalisen median nousun myötä myös yritysten ja asiakkaiden välinen suhde on murroksessa, kun yritysten sijaan potentiaalisilla asiakkailla on valta määritellä, millaista sisältöä he haluavat. Tutkielma on tapaustutkimus Doven Real Beauty -kampanjan kahdesta mainoksesta, #ChooseBeautiful ja #MyBeautyMySay. Tutkimuksessa tutkitaan, miten mainokset luovat narratiiveja naiseudesta hyödyntäen semioottisia ja diskursiivisia resursseja, ja miten näiden narratiivien avulla pyritään mainostamaan tuotetta ja brändiä. Lisäksi …

“KKona where’s your sense of patriotism?” : Positioning Nationality in the Spectatorship of Competitive Overwatch Play

2022

AbstractThis chapter analyzes the discursive construction of nationality and ethnicity in the context of the Overwatch World Cup 2019 and especially among the discussions of the world cup’s spectators on the live-streaming platform Twitch. Drawing on the positioning theory and the concept of banal nationalism, our study demonstrates how esports fans are active negotiators and co-creators of the esports discourse. The analysis illustrates what kind of role nationality and ethnicity take in this environment, in other words what they come to mean for those participating in the discourses defining them.

The many faces of online community : Images and imaginings of togetherness on Imgur

2018

This article discusses the meaning and function of “community” as a discourse on the image-sharing website Imgur. The analysis shows that the community term has many meanings and serves as a shorthand for a wide variety of social practices, and these meanings are shaped by the experiences of social action leading to the use of the term. Based on ethnographic data, nexus analysis provides an understanding of how the interactions related to community on the site come to take place the way they do. In conceiving of these interactions as mediated discourse, the article provides a fresh approach to the long-established academic discussion on the definition of community, suggesting a new concepti…

Person reference as a device for constructing experiences as typical in group therapy.

2008

Sharing one's experiences is a crucial activity in group therapies. In such therapies, groups can be either constituted around one problem or goal common to all the clients, or the group can work as a place in which clients can learn from one another and share experiences whether their individual problems are similar or not. Almost all (psycho) therapy types have a group application, and groups are assumed to be rather efficient in psychological progressing (see, e.g. Corey, 1986; Wootton, 1977). In this article I will concentrate on one type of group therapy, namely the Minnesota model group therapy for addicts, and examine how the clients share experiences and, especially, how they constr…

: Russell Banks, Raymond Carver, David Cronenberg, Bret Easton Ellis, David Lynch

2008

The use of the French adjective “malsain” (usually translated in English as “unhealthy,” “unwholesome” or “sick”) to judge a work of art has led me to question the relevance of this metaphor, the way this value is determined, the reasons which lead the subject to consume shocking material and the possibility to distinguish art from mere symptom. I consider the unhealthy, on the one hand, as a relation of transmission which produces an aesthetic based on metaphor and metonymy, and on the other, as a subjective value delivered by a self or a law, and I argue that, as it is entirely discursive, the unhealthy is in effect an uncanny metonymy. I show that the works under study represent and cond…

New Health Advice: Health Forum Sites as a Change of Discourse Frame, from Doctor-to-Patient to User-to-User

2016

Health forum communities form support groups responding to the need for information. Participants in these communities nd a space in which they share experiences and feelings, and are able to recount their success stories and failures according to a ‘gather, share and learn’ paradigm. One of the main worries concerning these spaces has been the unmonitored information that is provided by users who do not/ cannot take responsibility for what they say. Previous studies were intended to explore how individuals with health issues use health-related online communities to access information and support. This research, on the other hand, examines the extent to which health advice may be conversati…
