Ocnos : revista de estudios sobre lectura

2014

Th…

A New Wavelet-Based Texture Descriptor for Image Retrieval

2007

This paper presents a novel texture descriptor based on the wavelet transform. First, we will consider vertical and horizontal coefficients at the same position as the components of a bivariate random vector. The magnitud and angle of these vectors are computed and its histograms are analyzed. This empirical magnitud histogram is modelled by using a gamma distribution (pdf). As a result, the feature extraction step consists of estimating the gamma parameters using the maxima likelihood estimator and computing the circular histograms of angles. The similarity measurement step is done by means of the well-known Kullback-Leibler divergence. Finally, retrieval experiments are done using the Bro…

Coping, stress, and personality in Spanish nursing students: A longitudinal study

2014

The purpose of this study was to examine the dominant stress coping style in nursing students, its relationships with stressful life events and personality traits, and the students' changes during their academic training. A non-experimental two-wave longitudinal design was carried out in 199 nursing students recruited from three Spanish nursing schools. The Stressful Life Events Scale, NEO-FFI, and COPE questionnaire were administered at the beginning (T1) and end (T2) of their nursing studies. Descriptive statistics, Anova(s), NPar tests, and Pearson correlations were carried out. Results show that nursing students' dominant coping style was emotion-focused coping, both at T1 and T2. Highl…

μ-e conversion in nuclei versus μ→e γ: an effective field theory point of view

1998

Using an effective lagrangian description we analyze possible new physics contributions to the most relevant muon number violating processes: $\mu \to e \gamma$ and $\mu$--$e$ conversion in nuclei. We identify a general class of models in which those processes are generated at one loop level and in which $\mu$--$e$ conversion is enhanced with respect to $\mu \to e \gamma$ by a large $\ln(m^2_\mu/\Lambda^2),$ where $\Lambda$ is the scale responsible for the new physics. For this wide class of models bounds on $\mu$--$e$ conversion constrain the scale of new physics more stringently than $\mu \to e \gamma$ already at present and, with the expected improvements in $\mu$--$e$ conversion experim…

Lucrezio e Carlo Magno. A proposito dell’epistola di Dungal sulle eclissi (MGH Epistolae IV Karolini aevi II, pp. 570-578)

2021

It is generally assumed that Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura disappeared with the end of antiquity and did not reappear until Poggio Bracciolini’s rediscovery (1417). Yet, the oldest and most valuable manuscripts of DRN were copied in the Carolingian age and reflect a high degree of attention to Lucretius’ text and its content. In the present paper, I argue that by studying more carefully the origin and diffusion of Lucretian manuscripts in Carolingian Europe, it is possible to detect an almost unrecognized connection between textual tradition, grammatical erudition, and literary imitatio. In the first section, I offer an overview of the reception of DRN in such representative ninth-century writ…

During the Late Middle Ages some queens consort of the Crown of Aragon were designated as lieutenants. Lieutenancy was a governmental office in which the king delegated all his power during a period of absence. In the present article we intend to cl…

Latency versus persistence or intermittent recurrences: Evidence for a latent state of murine cytomegalovirus in the lungs

1997

The state of cytomegalovirus (CMV) after the resolution of acute infection is an unsolved problem in CMV research. While the term "latency" is in general use to indicate the maintenance of the viral genome, a formal exclusion of low-level persistent productive infection depends on the sensitivity of the assay for detecting infectious virus. We have improved the method for detecting infectivity by combining centrifugal infection of permissive indicator cells in culture, expansion to an infectious focus, and sensitive detection of immediate-early RNA in the infected cells by reverse transcriptase PCR. A limiting-dilution approach defined the sensitivity of this assay. Infectivity was thereby …

Random, asynchronous, and asymmetric transcriptional activity of enhancer-flanking major immediate-early genes ie1/3 and ie2 during murine cytomegalo…

2001

ABSTRACT The lungs are a major organ site of cytomegalovirus (CMV) pathogenesis, latency, and recurrence. Previous work on murine CMV latency has documented a high load and an even distribution of viral genomes in the lungs after the resolution of productive infection. Initiation of the productive cycle requires expression of the ie1/3 transcription unit, which is driven by the immediate-early (IE) promoter P 1/3 and generates IE1 and IE3 transcripts by differential splicing. Latency is molecularly defined by the absence of IE3 transcripts specifying the essential transactivator protein IE3. In contrast, IE1 transcripts were found to be generated focally and randomly, reflecting sporadic P …

Synthetic (glyco-)peptides of the homophilic recognition domain of E-cadherin lead to increased E-cadherin mRNA synthesis and are inductors of cell d…

2010

E-cadherin is one of the critical molecules involved in the metastatic process in many types of cancer. Once combined, E-cadherin exceeds the amount of membranous E-cadherin on the cellular surface by activation of intracellular signaling cascades. Studies on transformed keratinocytes of the HaCat cell line showed induction of differentiation by synthetical partial structures of the homophilic binding region of E-cadherin. The knowledge of effects in lung cancer cells is sparse. Therefore, the effects in primary lung cancer cell lines were investigated. Four primary lung cancer cell lines were incubated for 3, 6, 12, 15, 18, and 24h with synthetic partial structures (peptide and glycopeptid…
