Selection bias during recruitment of elderly subjects from the general population for psychiatric interviews

The aim of the present study was to determine and assess a possible selection bias in an epidemiologic investigation in the elderly. A stratified sample of 1305 probands aged 60-99 years was initially contacted by mail and then by telephone to obtain their consent to participate in a psychiatric interview. A liberal recruitment procedure led to interview participation of only 291 subjects. The proportion of younger, male, and married subjects participating in the study was greater than that of elderly, female, and single or widowed subjects. Sexual selection predicts that trade-offs maintain trait variation in alternative reproductive strategies. Experiments often focus on testosterone (T), but the gonadotropins follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone may provide a clearer understanding of the pleiotropic relationships among traits. We assess the activational role of gonadotropins on T and corticosterone regulation in traits expressed by polymorphic male side-blotched lizards Uta stansburiana. Weighted Least-Squares Likelihood Ratio Test for Branch Testing in Phylogenies Reconstructed from Distance Measures

A variety of analytical methods is available for branch testing in distance-based phylogenies. However, these methods are rarely used, possibly because the estimation of some of their statistics, especially the covariances, is not always feasible. We show that these difficulties can be overcome if some simplifying assumptions are made, namely distance independence. The weighted least-squares likelihood ratio test (WLS-LRT) we propose is easy to perform, using only the distances and some of their associated variances. The reason for this choice is the complexity and problems associated with risk return optimisation (non-convex and non-differential objective function).
