Selection Task and Computer-Based Feedback to Improve the Searching Process in Task-Oriented Reading Situations

2015

Adaptive feedback has showed to be effective to enhance strategic reading behaviors and performance in task-oriented reading situations, but it is difficult to be implemented in classroom environments. Computer-based systems allow overcoming these challenges. We conducted an experiment in which secondary-school students read two texts, answered comprehension questions and selected relevant text information while receiving automatic feedback about selection accuracy and performance. Two experimental conditions were designed to assess the effects of feedback and selection attempts. Then, students perform a transfer task without any of these elements. We found that one-attempt and two-attempt …

Self-Selection into Exports: Productivity and/or Innovation?

2009

Abstract Recent research has related the firm decision to export with firm innovation activities and productivity. The aim of this paper is to disentangle the direct and indirect links through which self-selection into exports, coming both from productivity and innovation, may operate. For this purpose we use Spanish manufacturing firm data for the period 1990–2000, drawn from the Encuesta sobre Estrategias Empresariales. The main results we obtain can be summarized as follows. First, there is a self-selection into exports direct effect coming from productivity. Second, there is also a self-selection indirect effect into exports stemming from productivity to the probability of exporting thr…

Critical reasoning (CR) when confronted with contradictory information from multiple sources is a crucial ability in a knowledge-based society and digital world. Using information without critically reflecting on the content and its quality may lead to the acceptance of information based on unwarranted claims. Previous personal beliefs are assumed to play a decisive role when it comes to critically differentiating between assertions and claims and warranted knowledge and facts. The role of generic epistemic beliefs on critical stance and attitude in reflectively dealing with information is well researched. Relatively few studies have been conducted on the influence of domain-specific belief…

ERP lifecycle: When to retire your ERP system?

2011

Published version of a chapter in the book: Enterprise information systems, vol 219, part 3, 168-177. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-24358-5_17 A lot of research has been undertaken focusing on ERP systems lifecycles, but very little paid attention to retirement. ERP retirement means the replacement of an ERP with another. The aim of this research paper is to investigate why and when should organizations retire their ERP systems. A convenience case study of an SME has been selected from Egypt. The case study under investigation has retired their local ERP system and replaced it with SAP ERP. Results of our analysis indicated that reasons of retirem…

ERP Lifecycle

2000

A lot of research has been undertaken focusing on ERP systems lifecycles, but very little paid attention to retirement. ERP retirement means the replacement of an ERP with another. The aim of this research paper is to investigate why and when should organizations retire their ERP systems. A convenience case study of a SME has been selected from Egypt. The case study under investigation has retired their local ERP system and replaced it with SAP ERP. Results of the analysis indicate that reasons of retirement were: wrong selection, users were not involved in the selection process, and lack of an official implementation methodology. This is considered a new finding since main stream literatur…

Cultural Industries: Product-Market Characteristics, Management Challenges and Industry Dynamics

2014

During the last decade, cultural industries have grown in economic importance, and research interest in them has increased. Despite prolific research, there is a lack of a comprehensive view on the subject. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a reconceptualization of cultural industries by tracing their boundaries, their features and the dynamics that follow from these features. This is achieved through a review of 314 cultural industries studies, whereby a classification system of three main and six sub-categories is constructed. On the basis of the review, a framework for future research is presented. Most importantly, future research should examine selection criteria and selecti…

Promotion of Reading Interests in the Study Process at the University and Lessons in School

2015

<p><em>The necessity of promoting reading interests in connection with the problems that have to be solved today and in near future in school, university and the society on the whole puts forward the task for the prospective teachers of literature to master not only theoretical knowledge in their study process but also to acquire skills necessary for their future pedagogical work so that they are able to choose the most suitable methodological approach for the interpretation of a literary work in each teaching/learning situation.</em></p>

Proteasomes shape the repertoire of T cells participating in antigen-specific immune responses

2006

Differences in the cleavage specificities of constitutive proteasomes and immunoproteasomes significantly affect the generation of MHC class I ligands and therefore the activation of CD8-positive T cells. Based on these findings, we investigated whether proteasomal specificity also influences CD8-positive T cells during thymic selection by peptides derived from self proteins. We find that one of the self peptides responsible for positive selection of ovalbumin-specific OT-1 T cells, which is derived from the f-actin capping protein (Cpalpha1), is efficiently generated only by immunoproteasomes. Furthermore, OT-1 mice backcrossed onto low molecular mass protein 7 (LMP7)-deficient mice show a…

Widespread selection for high and low secondary structure in coding sequences across all domains of life

2019

AbstractCodon composition, GC-content and local RNA secondary structures can have a profound effect on gene expression and mutations affecting these parameters, even though they do not alter the protein sequence, are not neutral in terms of selection. Although evidence exists that in some cases selection favors more stable RNA secondary structures, we currently lack a concrete idea of how many genes are affected within a species, and if this is a universal phenomenon in nature. We searched for signs of structural selection in a global manner, analyzing a set of one million coding sequences from 73 species representing all domains of life, as well as viruses, by means of our newly developed s…

Biological properties of extracellular vesicles and their physiological functions

2015

The authors wish to thank Dr R Simpson and Dr D Taylor for critical reading of the manuscript and acknowledge the Horizon 2020 European Cooperation in Science and Technology programme and its support of our European Network on Microvesicles and Exosomes in Health & Disease (ME-HaD; BM1202 www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/bmbs/Actions/BM1202). In the past decade, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recognized as potent vehicles of intercellular communication, both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. This is due to their capacity to transfer proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, thereby influencing various physiological and pathological functions of both recipient and parent cells. While intensive invest…
