Estimating regional differences in returns to education when schooling and location are determined endogenously
2010
While the growing supply of university skills is known to have agglomerated towards the large centers in Finland, there is no research knowledge available on the development of regional demands. This paper attempts to fill this gap by analyzing regional variation in the private-sector return to university education in Finland for the period 1970 - 2004. In the analysis, we focus on studying 1) whether there are differences in the return to university between different region types, and 2) to what extent can these differences - if they exist - be explained by differences in regional skill supply and unemployment. For the econometric analysis, we use a large register-based dataset constructed…
DEVELOPMENT OF A BLENDED COURSE FOR ONLINE TEACHING: PROCESS AND OUTCOMES
2019
In this study, we outline the different steps and strategies followed to develop an online formation program aimed to higher education teachers. The aim of this program is to provide with teaching competencies to face the challenges of the next decade’s classroom, with a special focus on the role of digital technology in learning environments, through a combination of a self-managed course with a guided on-site training with real cases. A multicultural, multidisciplinary team conceives this blended learning format, which applies a storytelling approach for content generation and communication. A detailed description of the different factors and stages followed to undertake the project is pr…
Introduction: Exploring Nordic Game Research
2014
Nordic DiGRA 2012 Conference was held at the University of Tampere on June 6-8, 2012. In this Special Issue of the Transactions of DiGRA journal, we present a selection of the best papers of that conference.
Linear Feature Extraction for Ranking
2018
We address the feature extraction problem for document ranking in information retrieval. We then propose LifeRank, a Linear feature extraction algorithm for Ranking. In LifeRank, we regard each document collection for ranking as a matrix, referred to as the original matrix. We try to optimize a transformation matrix, so that a new matrix (dataset) can be generated as the product of the original matrix and a transformation matrix. The transformation matrix projects high-dimensional document vectors into lower dimensions. Theoretically, there could be very large transformation matrices, each leading to a new generated matrix. In LifeRank, we produce a transformation matrix so that the generat…
Przeszczepy narządowe w okresie epidemii COVID-19
2020
Epidemia COVID-19 zmieniła podejście do kwalifikacji dawców i biorców przeszczepów narządowych.
A mate to die for? A model of conditional monogyny in cannibalistic spiders.
2012
Monogynous males in various species actively limit themselves to mating with a single female in their lifetime. Whereas previous models have considered monogyny as an obligate mating strategy, here we explore the potential of monogyny to evolve as a context-specific (conditional) behavior. Using a state-dependent dynamic game model based on the biology of the cannibalistic spider Argiope bruennichi, we confirm that conditional monogyny can evolve under broad conditions, including an even sex ratio. We predict that males should make a terminal investment when mating with large, virgin females, especially if population density is low and the encounter occurs late in the season. We encourage e…
Kouluvalintapolitiikka perusopetuksessa: suomalaiskaupunkien koulumarkkinat kansainvälisessä valossa
2006
Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kouluvalintapolitiikan käyttöä lasten sijoittamisessa oppivelvollisuuskouluihin. Kyse on ylikansallisesta toimintapolitiikasta, jonka mukaan vanhemmat voivat hakea lapselle koulupaikkaa haluamaansa kouluun ja koulut voivat (osittain) valita oppilaansa. Kouluvalintapolitiikkaa on toteutettu Suomen yhtenäiskoulujärjestelmässä 1990-luvun puolivälistä alkaen. Kouluvalintapolitiikan tapahtumapaikka käsitteellistetään koulumarkkinoiksi. Käsitteen koulumarkkinat päällekkäisiä merkityksiä eritellään ideologiseksi malliksi (koulumarkkinat, hallinnolliseksi malliksi (kvasimarkkinat), alueelliseksi malliksi (paikalliset koulumarkkinat ja empiiriseksi tutkimuskohteeksi (elet…
Evolution of Complex Acoustic Signals in Drosophila Species
2009
species produce complex acous-tic cues, so-called courtship songs, while pursuing a female. In most of the over 100 species studied so far (see thelist of these species in Hoikkala, 2005), such cues areproduced by wing vibration. Other mechanisms of songproduction include abdomen purring (Hoy, Hoikkala, &Kaneshiro, 1988) and rapid vibrations of the whole body(Ritchie & Gleason, 1995). The carrier frequency of songsproduced through any of these actions ranges from 150 to500Hz. A hitherto unknown mechanism enables males ofsome Hawaiian species to generate songs of up to 15,000Hz(Hoikkala, Hoy, & Kaneshiro, 1989).The structure of the courtship songs of closely relatedspecies often reflects phylo…
Bayesian Hierarchical Models for Random Routes in Finite Populations
1996
In many practical situations involving sampling from finite populations, it is not possible (or it is prohibitely expensive) to access, or to even produce, a listing of all of the units in the population. In these situations, inferences can not be based on random samples from the population. Random routes are widely used procedures to collect data in absence of well defined sampling frames, and they usually have either been improperly analyzed as random samples, or entirely ignored as useless. We present here a Bayesian analysis of random routes that incorporates the information provided but carefully takes into account the non- randomness in the selection of the units.
