Implicit Learning of Regularities in Western Tonal Music by Self-Organization

Western tonal music is a highly structured system whose regularities are implicitly learned in everyday life. A hierarchical self-organizing network simulates learning of tonal regularities by mere exposure to musical material. The trained network provides a parsimonious account of empirical findings on perceived tone, chord and key relationships and suggests activation as a unifying mechanism underlying a range of cognitive tasks.
Accumulation and self-organization in hydrofracturetransport of fluids

Abstract Propagation of “mobile hydrofractures” is one of several mechanisms to transport fluids. Analogue experiments show howthis transport mechanism is intimately linked with accumulation, by stepwise mergers of fluid batches. Analogue experiments and numerical modelling indicate that such stepwise transport and accumulation may lead to the establishment of a self-organised critical state.

Marginal contribution, reciprocity and equity in segregated groups: Bounded rationality and selforganization in social networks

We study the formation of social networks that are based on local interaction and simple rule following. Agents evaluate the profitability of link formation on the basis of the Myerson-Shapley principle that payoffs come from the marginal contribution they make to coalitions. The NP-hard problem associated with the Myerson-Shapley value is replaced by a boundedly rational 'spatially' myopic process. Agents consider payoffs from direct links with their neighbours (level 1), which can include indirect payoffs from neighbours' neighbours (level 2) and up to M-levels that are far from global. Description of Dynamic Structured Scenes by a SOM/ARSOM Hierarchy

A neural architecture is presented, aimed to describe the dynamic evolution of complex structures inside a video sequence. The proposed system is arranged as a tree of self-organizing maps. Leaf nodes are implemented by ARSOM networks as a way to code dynamic inputs, while classical SOM's are used to implement the upper levels of the hierarchy. Depending on the application domain, inputs are made by suitable low level features extracted frame by frame of the sequence. Theoretical foundations of the architecture are reported along with a detailed outline of its structure, and encouraging experimental results.
