The red tooth hypothesis: A computational model of predator-prey relations, protean escape behavior and sexual reproduction

This paper presents an extension of the Red Queen Hypothesis (hereafter, RQH) that we call the Red Tooth Hypothesis (RTH). This hypothesis suggests that predator-prey relations may play a role in the maintenance of sexual reproduction in many higher animals. RTH is based on an interaction between learning on the part of predators and evolution on the part of prey. We present a simple predator-prey computer simulation that illustrates the effects of this interaction. Neuronal precursor-specific activity of a human doublecortin regulatory sequence.

The doublecortin (DCX) gene encodes a 40-kDa microtubule-associated protein specifically expressed in neuronal precursors of the developing and adult CNS. Due to its specific expression pattern, attention was drawn to DCX as a marker for neuronal precursors and neurogenesis, thereby underscoring the importance of its promoter identification and promoter analysis. Here, we analysed the human DCX regulatory sequence and confined it to a 3.5-kb fragment upstream of the ATG start codon. We demonstrate by transient transfection experiments that this fragment is sufficient and specific to drive expression of reporter genes in embryonic and adult neuronal precursors. Transformation to generate multiple copies of regulatory DNA sequences has been used to study the interactions between regulatory proteins and their target sequences, since a high copy number of these sequences may titrate trans-acting regulatory proteins. We have analyzed the synthesis of invertase in yeast strains carrying different SUC genes transformed with the multiple-copy plasmid pSH143, a derivative of pJDB207 containing the promoter and upstream regulatory sequences of SUC4. Traditionally, sequential analysis has been conducted to assess relationships between two behaviours (one considered as focal and the other as conditioned). Lacustrine sedimentation in the diapir-controlled Miocene Bicorb Basin, Eastern Spain

The Miocene Bicorb Basin is a small elongated basin developed by normal faulting of a thick Jurassic–Cretaceous carbonate succession and subsequent diapirism of Upper Triassic mudstones and evaporites. The basin fill comprises a sequence over 650 m thick formed by two units. The lower, alluvial unit consists of a complex alternation of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones, and minor lacustrine limestones. The upper unit comprises marginal alluvial and lacustrine deposits in which seven lacustrine facies associations have been distinguished.
