In forensic science and in legal medicine Y chromosomal typing is indispensable for sex determination, for paternity testing in the absence of the father and for distinguishing males in multiple rape cases. Another potential application is the estimation of paternal geographic origin or family name from a crime stain to narrow down the range of suspects and thus reduce costs of mass screenings. However, Y typing alone cannot provide a sufficiently resolved DNA fingerprint as required for court convictions. Financial theory indicates that banks dependent on external resources and/or financially fragile have more difficulties in refinancing their operations of credit supply, due to the informational problems they face and/or they cause. In this context, this study tests the hypothesis that the mandatory adoption by banks of the IAS/IFRS accounting standards, known to be of higher quality, leads to an increase in the quantity of loans granted by banks constrained in liquidity, all else equal. Based on a sample of European banks, between 2003 and 2008, we obtain results in favour of this hypothesis.

Amplicon sequencing of partial regions of the ribosomal RNA loci (rDNA) is widely used to profile microbial communities. However, the rDNA is dynamic and can exhibit substantial interspecific and intraspecific variation in copy number in prokaryotes and, especially, in microbial eukaryotes. As change in rDNA copy number is a common response to environmental change, rDNA copy number is not necessarily a property of a species. Global Distribution of Shigella sonnei Clones

To investigate global epidemiology of Shigella sonnei, we performed multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis of 1,672 isolates obtained since 1943 from 50 countries on 5 continents and the Pacific region. Three major clonal groups were identified; 2 were globally spread. Type 18 and its derivatives have circulated worldwide in recent decades.
