Changing forest stakeholders’ perception of ecosystem services with linguistic nudging
2019
This paper explores whether the perceptions of forest owners and professionals could be nudged towards more sustainable management practices by adjusting a policy text's metaphorical content. Recent research has demonstrated a link between information interventions and preference change, but there is a need to further explore individuals' reactions to information on forest-based ecosystem services and to link these to the design of policy instruments. We contribute to narrowing this gap by nudging the content of a policy text comparing rotation forest management (RFM) and continuous cover forestry (CCF), and exposing it to forest stakeholders. The research is carried out in Finland, the so-…
2005
The urban unity-difference, formed of the social community interacting with the human, natural and constructed environments, produces private and social values or benefits. Interactions among the "services supplying urban firm" and the social, economic and natural environments produce value flows that dinamically form and exchange in the value chain. The New Economics approach is used to analyze the functioning principles of such a kind of value chain. Moreover, the application of a multicriterial operational model for the valuation of variations of social capital produced by every kind of private o public "firm-market system" is outlined. The subject is rilevant: in the public decisional c…
Sharing practices in the digital age: inclusive processes and new citizens in the intelligent city
2015
Semantic place recognition for context aware services
2012
Extracting the meaning of the most significant places, which are frequently visited by a mobile user, is a relevant problem in mobile computing. Predicting semantic meaning of such places is useful in many areas. The problem of place semantic annotation of a user location can be challenging for service providers. Awareness of user activities is very important for development of personalized applications, which can be used in health care systems, living systems, etc. Predicting location of mobile users not only enables development of high quality location-based services and applications, but also improves resource reservation in wireless networks. In this research several solutions for seman…

Discursive Strategies to Negotiate Power Relations in Disability Services Client Juries
2020
Collaboration with clients is an efficient way to develop social services. To strengthen the possibilities for clients to influence services, client juries are established. However, collaboration in the juries is perceived as difficult because of the power imbalance inherent in the client–social worker relationship. The aim of this study was to examine how the participants negotiated power relations in client jury meetings. The data consisted of four observed disability services client jury meetings. Analysis was performed using action-implicative discourse analysis, which aims to define different communicative problems, interactional strategies, and situated ideals of communicative practic…
Managing a boreal forest landscape for providing timber, storing and sequestering carbon
2015
Human well-being highly depends on ecosystem services and this dependence is expected to increase in the future with increasing population and economic growth. Studies that investigate trade-offs between ecosystem services are urgently needed for informing policy-makers. We examine the trade-offs between a provisioning (revenues from timber selling) and regulating (carbon storage and sequestration) ecosystem services among seven alternative forest management regimes in a large boreal forest production landscape. First, we estimate the potential of the landscape to produce harvest revenues and store/sequester carbon across a 50-year time period. Then, we identify conflicts between harvest re…
