Individual differences in processes of lifestyle changes among people with obesity: an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) intervention in a prim…
2020
Abstract Aim: To explore what thoughts, feelings, and learning processes were involved in obese participants’ lifestyle change during an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) lifestyle intervention delivered in primary health care. Background: Previous studies have revealed that lifestyle interventions are effective at promoting initial weight loss, but reduced weight is often difficult to sustain because of the failure to maintain healthy lifestyle changes. Achieving and maintaining lifestyle changes requires to learn self-regulation skills. ACT-based lifestyle interventions combine many self-regulatory skill factors, and the results from previous studies are promising. Research on the i…
An integrated care pathway for cancer patients with diabetes: A proposal from the Italian experience
2020
Diabetes and cancer frequently coexist in the same subject, often with relevant clinical effects on the management and prognosis of the comorbid patient. The existing guidelines, however, do not appropriately address many clinical issues in this setting. Although collaboration between diabetologists and oncologists should play an important role in achieving appropriate levels of care, close coordination or agreement between these specialists is seldom offered. There is an urgent need for greater interdisciplinary integration between all specialists involved in this setting, for a shared approach ensuring that organisational silos are overcome. To this end, the Italian Associations of Medica…
A Model of Goal Dynamics in Organizations: Goal Setting, Goal Commitment, Training and Management by Objectives
2009
The purpose of the present work is to build a suitable system dynamics model for goal dynamics in organizations, as proposed by Barlas & Yasarcan (2008). The proposed model does not bear any ambition of being exhaustive: the main objective of this paper is to propose a model of goal dynamics in which Goal Setting, Management by Objectives and Training are viewed as human resource practices able to enhance workers’ goal commitment, and therefore, improve organizational performance. A causal loop and a quantitative model of goal dynamics in organizations are described. A base run and 4 different scenarios are provided. Limitations of the present research and conclusions are finally discussed.…

Settling of dilute and semidilute fiber suspensions at finite Re
2007
The motion of tracer fibers settling in a suspension made optically transparent using an index-of refraction matching technique is studied as a function of concentration, aspect ratio, fluid viscosity, and fiber length distribution. At Re ∼ O (1), two different regimes of sedimentation are clearly identified. For small volume fractions we find that fibers settle with their long-axis preferentially in the horizontal state. With increasing volume fraction, fibers settle preferentially with their long-axis aligned in the direction of gravity. These findings are strikingly different than for those conducted with Re → 0 and qualitatively support the numerical simulations reported by Kuusela et a…
Sustainable access to biobased biphenol epoxy resins by electrochemical dehydrogenative dimerization of eugenol
2019
Limited fossil resources require innovative monomers and polymers derived from renewable feedstocks such as plant biomass. Thermosetting epoxy resins largely rely on petrochemical bisphenol-type monomers, which give high performance materials but are controversial due to their effects on human health. Herein, we present two biobased epoxy resins by direct dehydrogenative dimerization of eugenol, the main component of clove oil. Taking the Principles of Green Chemistry into account, we developed electrochemical dehydrodimerization at reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) electrodes using methanol as environmentally benign solvent. Thus, fluorinated solvents such as 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropa…
Yield Management and Airline Strategic Groups
2011
A new strategic group of companies has appeared in Europe. This group, low-cost airlines, differs markedly from the traditional flagship companies. Focusing on a dynamic approach, the study discussed in this paper was developed to determine whether companies in different strategic groups adopted different price setting methods depending on which group they belonged to. The study is based on price information recorded at 11 different time periods for 12 airlines.

Journalistic practices of science popularization in the context of users’ agenda: A case study of „New Scientist”
2017
The article includes a discussion of two models which describe contemporary communication processes in journalism: agenda-setting and news value, indicating the need to expand their research tools to include qualitative methods, and merging the analyses of the reception and the message. It also includes indications as to the possibility, or even the social relevance, of the methods for applying those research perspectives to analysing journalism popularising science. Later, I present the results of an analysis of the content of a sample of 500 most read popular science texts available on the New Scientist website. I demonstrate which thematic areas were valued by the readers, and what value…
Properties of radiation-modified blends of polyethylene with elastomers and liquid crystalline copolyester
2001
The results are given on the effect of γ-irradiation on properties of blends of high and low-density polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) with elastomers -ethylene/propylene/diene rubber (EPDM) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP). The morphological, thermal, mechanical properties (including thermosetting properties) and adhesion properties of blended composites were investigated. A special attention was paid to the applicability of the blends as thermosetting materials (TSM). The LCP used was a copolyester of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with p-(hydroxybenzoic acid) in the ratio 40: 60. It was found that addition of LCP essentially influenced the therm…
