Health Promotion Interventions in Sports Clubs: Can We Talk About a Setting-Based Approach? A Systematic Mapping Review
2019
Many researchers and authorities have recognized the important role that sports clubs can play in public health. In spite of attempts to create a theoretical framework in the early 2000s, a thorough understanding of sports clubs as a setting for health promotion (HP) is lacking. Despite calls for more effective, sustainable, and theoretically grounded interventions, previous literature reviews have identified no controlled studies assessing HP interventions in sports clubs. This systematic mapping review details how the settings-based approach is applied through HP interventions in sports clubs and highlights facilitators and barriers for sports clubs to become health-promoting settings. In…
Sport clubs' health promotion activities for the surrounging communities : a comparative case study of Columbus Blue Jackets, HJK and Sotkamon Jymy
2014
ABSTRACT The level of physical activity continues to decrease globally. Therefore it is important to explore new ways of promoting physical activity and healthy life style. Sport clubs are an excellent setting for physical activity and health related programs targeted for the surrounding community due to their visibility, popularity and image. They offer also companies a possibility to conduct their health related corporate social responsibility activities by supporting and cooperating with the club. Despite its importance there are not many studies related to the role of sport clubs as health promoters. The aim of this research is to explore what kind of health promotion activities sport c…
Optical Monitoring of Microplastics Filtrated from Wastewater Sludge and Suspended in Ethanol.
2021
The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. This allowed us to create a teaching set of samples to be characterized …

Applying health promoting sports club standards in the Netherlands
2014
This study explores health promotion activity of Dutch sports clubs by using the Health Promoting Sports Clubs (HPSC) standards, which are developed in Finland and here applied to the Dutch sports context. The standards consist of 23 items which cover different perspectives on health promotion. The standards form an overall HPSC index, which is used to create health promotion profiles for the sports clubs. 17 sports clubs from the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch participated in this study, of which 42 club officials (1-6 per club) evaluated their own club on all HPSC standards on a five-point Likert scale. Per club, the average score on each standard was calculated. The average on the HPSC…
Multippeliskleroosia (MS) sairastavien fyysisessä toimintakyvyssä tapahtuneet muutokset kymmenen vuoden seurannassa

Multippeliskleroosia (MS) sairastavien fyysisessä toimintakyvyssä tapahtuneet muutokset kymmenen vuoden seurannassa Tuulikki Alanko Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikunta- ja terveystieteen tiedekunta, Terveystieteiden laitos, kevät 2012 sivumäärä 41, liitteitä 4 Ohjaajat: professori Arja Häkkinen Jyväskylän Yliopisto, TtT Jaana Paltamaa Jyväskylän ammattikorkeakoulu Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää Keski-Suomen sairaanhoitopiirin alueen MS-tautia sairastavilla kymmenen vuoden aikana tapahtuneita muutoksia toimintakyvyssä ja yhteiskunnallisten tukipalvelujen käytössä. Tutkimusjoukko saatiin vuoden 2000 MS-kohortista (n=211). Kyselytutkimuksen vastausprosentti oli 84 %. Tutkittavista naisia o…
Physical fitness and anthropometrics in Finnish soldiers during their early career: prospective changes during a 3-year follow-up.
2020
IntroductionPhysical fitness is a fundamental capability required of military personnel, but studies focusing on longitudinal changes in physical fitness and anthropometrics in soldiers are lacking. The aim was to evaluate physical fitness and anthropometrics in soldiers during their early career.MethodsA 3-year prospective study included 180 male soldiers (baseline age 26±2 years) with measures of a 12 min running test, standing long jump, sit-up and push-up tests, and body mass, height and waist circumference (WC). Baseline data were stratified into tertiles, and the changes within each tertile were analysed using dependent t-tests and analysis of variance.Results12 min running test dista…
Individual adaptation to endurance training guided by heart rate variability
2015
Sykevaihtelu kuvastaa autonomisen hermoston toimintaa, minkä vuoksi sen on ajateltu kertovan luotettavasti urheilijan palautumistilasta. Viime vuosina onkin herännyt ajatus, voisiko sykevaihtelun avulla ohjelmoida kestävyysharjoittelua ja sitä kautta optimoida harjoitusvaste. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, johtaako sykevaihteluun perustuva harjoittelun ohjelmointi parempaan lopputulokseen kuin perinteinen, ennalta suunniteltu ohjelma. Menetelmät. Tutkimukseen valittiin 40 koehenkilöä, 20 naista (ikä 34.0 ± 7.8 v, VO2max 48.6 ± 4.3 ml/kg/min) ja 20 miestä (ikä 35.4 ± 6.6 v, VO2max 55.5 ± 5.3 ml/kg/min), lopulliseen analyysiin otettiin 31 henkilöä. Koehenkilöt harjoittelivat sam…
Estimating Stress in Online Meetings by Remote Physiological Signal and Behavioral Features
2022
Work stress impacts people’s daily lives. Their well-being can be improved if the stress is monitored and addressed in time. Attaching physiological sensors are used for such stress monitoring and analysis. Such approach is feasible only when the person is physically presented. Due to the transfer of the life from offline to online, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, remote stress measurement is of high importance. This study investigated the feasibility of estimating participants’ stress levels based on remote physiological signal features (rPPG) and behavioral features (facial expression and motion) obtained from facial videos recorded during online video meetings. Remote physiological sign…
Predicting and monitoring individual endurance training adaptation and individualizing training prescription : with endurance performance, cardiac au…
2016
Humans adapt differently to standardized endurance training programs. While some individuals may achieve huge improvements in physical fitness, other individuals may even suffer from negative adaptations. Special attention should be paid to identification of non-responders, which would enable to modify training to be more effective. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether running performance, cardiac autonomic regulation and neuromuscular performance can be used in 1) predicting subsequent endurance training adaptations; 2) monitoring training adaptations; and 3) individualizing training prescription in recreational endurance runners. Three longitudinal training s…
