Bioavailability of pharmaceuticals in waters close to wastewater treatment plants: Use of fish bile for exposure assessment

Pharmaceuticals are ubiquitous in surface waters as a consequence of discharges from municipal wastewater treatment plants. However, few studies have assessed the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals to fish in natural waters. In the present study, passive samplers and rainbow trout were experimentally deployed next to three municipal wastewater treatment plants in Finland to evaluate the degree of animal exposure. Comparison of Cu-B Alloy and Stainless Steel as Electrode Material for Microbial Fuel Cell

The microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a technical devices that electricity produces during wastewater treatment. One of the problems of MFCs is a low current density. Thus, it is necessary to search for new electrodes for MFC. The comparison of Cu-B alloy and stainless steel as catalyst for MFCs cathode is presented in this paper. The research included measurements of the concentration of COD, NH4+ and NO3− in three types of reactors: without aeration, with aeration and with using a MFC (with Cu-B and stainless steel cathode). It has been shown that effectiveness of MFC with Cu-B electrode is higher than effectiveness of MFC with stainless steel electrode.

Biological processes for wastewater treatments are inherently dynamic systems because of the large variations in the influent wastewater flow rate, concentration composition and the adaptive behavior of the involved microorganisms. Moreover, the sludge retention time (SRT) is a critical factor to understand the bioreactor performances when changes in the influent or in the operation conditions take place. Greenhouse gas emissions from integrated urban drainage systems: where do we stand?

As sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, integrated urban drainage systems (IUDSs) (i.e., sewer systems, wastewater treatment plants and receiving water bodies) contribute to climate change. This paper, produced by the International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, reviews the state-of-the-art and modelling tools developed recently to understand and manage GHG emissions from IUDS. Further, open problems and research gaps are discussed and a framework for handling GHG emissions from IUDSs is presented. Applying the approximation method PAINT and the interactive method NIMBUS to the multiobjective optimization of operating a wastewater treatment plant

Using an interactive multiobjective optimization method called NIMBUS and an approximation method called PAINT, preferable solutions to a five-objective problem of operating a wastewater treatment plant are found. Effect of temperature on ammonium removal in Scenedesmus sp

The effect of temperature on microalgal ammonium uptake was investigated by carrying out four batch experiments in which a mixed culture of microalgae, composed mainly of Scenedesmus sp., was cultivated under different temperatures within the usual temperature working range in Mediterranean climate (15-34 ºC). Ammonium removal rates increased with temperature up to 26 ºC and stabilized thereafter. Ratkowsky and Cardinal Temperatures models successfully reproduced the experimental data. Optimum (31.3 ºC), minimum (8.8 ºC) and maximum (46.1 ºC) temperatures for ammonium removal by Scenedesmus sp. under the studied conditions were obtained as model parameters. The present study focused on the occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of 32 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in water and sediment, as well as the surrounding soil of the irrigation channels and lake of a Mediterranean coastal wetland, the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain). Moreover, the influent and effluent of ten wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that treat wastewater from Valencia and the surrounding areas were also studied. The dataset provides information on Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) detected in the Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain), a typical Mediterranean coastal wetland. These PPCPs constitute an important group of organic pollutants highly representative of the human impact.
