Evaluating structural and compositional canopy characteristics to predict the light-demand signature of the forest understorey in mixed, semi-natural…

2020

Questions: Light availability at the forest floor affects many forest ecosystem processes, and is often quantified indirectly through easy-to-measure stand characteristics. We investigated how three such characteristics, basal area, canopy cover and canopy closure, were related to each other in structurally complex mixed forests. We also asked how well they can predict the light-demand signature of the forest understorey (estimated as the mean Ellenberg indicator value for light [“EIVLIGHT”] and the proportion of “forest specialists” [“%FS”] within the plots). Furthermore, we asked whether accounting for the shade-casting ability of individual canopy species could improve predictions of EIV…

Flower abscission in Vitis vinifera L. triggered by gibberellic acid and shade discloses differences in the underlying metabolic pathways

2015

Understanding abscission is both a biological and an agronomic challenge. Flower abscission induced independently by shade and gibberellic acid (GAc) sprays was monitored in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) growing under a soilless greenhouse system during two seasonal growing conditions, in an early and late production cycle. Physiological and metabolic changes triggered by each of the two distinct stimuli were determined. Environmental conditions exerted a significant effect on fruit set as showed by the higher natural drop rate recorded in the late production cycle with respect to the early cycle. Shade and GAc treatments increased the percentage of flower drop compared to the control, and …

Shade effects on overseeded bermudagrass athletic fields: II. rooting, species composition, and traction

2019

Shade from athletic stadium structures can be a significant detriment to turfgrass performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of shade on rooting and playing surface stability, measured as traction, on overseeded or non-overseeded bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) turf. An experiment was established in 2013 on a mature bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. cv. Riviera] turf that was either overseeded with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) or non-overseeded. Shade structures were installed to create four light level treatments, including 0%, 30%, 60%, or 90% light-reducing shade cloth. The light treatments resulted in average daily light integrals (DLI) of 40.8,…

Sexes in gynodioeciousGeranium sylvaticumdo not differ in their isotopic signature or photosynthetic capacity

2017

• In gynodioecious plants, females are expected to produce more or better seeds than hermaphrodites in order to be maintained within the same population. Even though rarely measured, higher seed production can be achieved through differences in physiology. • In this work, we measured sexual dimorphism in several physiological traits in the gynodioecious plant Geranium sylvaticum. Photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductivity, transpiration rate, water use efficiency and isotopic signatures were measured in plants growing in two habitats differing in light availability. • Females have been reported to produce more seeds than hermaphrodites. However, we did not observe any significant difference…

Determining the optimal sowing period at a variety from Dahlia variabilis species from Mignon group

2010

Planted in addition to walls, to the south of the massif, in groups, beats or lawns, Dahlia beautifully decorates parks and gardens, The rebates are used especially varieties with small waist [6]. Today, when the development of green spaces is a real concern of people, we consider important to provide technology for the production of plants that can offer the widest possible variety of species with the widest possible decor period. Thus, the present article presents researches about determining the period of sowing for dwarf dahlias produced in pots, with spring and early summer flowering and used for decoration in green areas. In this experiment were taken in the account characters such se…

Color and photography in the restorative dentistry. A brief communication about color temperature, dental color and the use of light and photography …

2020

Relevance. Optical properties of dental tissues can be captured by photography, considering the characteristics of the light sources. Therefore photography might become a way to communicate the color and the characterizing aspects of the teeth, reducing the misunderstandings between the dental practice and the laboratory in the project of dental restoration. Purpose. To illustrate some ways of using the current photographic technology to document teeth color correctly, and to be able to communicate it without misunderstandings and to replicate it in a simple way. Materials and methods. The photographs were taken using Nikon D500 digital camera, Nikkor 60 mm 2.8 macro lens, Nikon SB-700 Spee…

Conservative swept volume boundary approximation

2010

We present a novel technique for approximating the boundary of a swept volume. The generator given by an input triangle mesh is rendered under all rigid transformations of a discrete trajectory. We use a special shader program that creates offset geometry of each triangle on the fly, thus guaranteeing a conservative rasterization and correct depth values. Utilizing rasterization mechanisms and the depth buffer we then get a conservative voxelization of the swept volume (SV) and can extract a triangle mesh from its surface. This mesh is simplified maintaining conservativeness as well as an error bound measured in terms of the one-sided Hausdorff distance. For this we introduce a new techniqu…

Color Difference Thresholds in Dentistry

2015

Purpose The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to determine 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) of dental ceramic under simulated clinical settings. Materials and Methods The spectral radiance of 63 monochromatic ceramic specimens was determined using a non-contact spectroradiometer. A total of 60 specimen pairs, divided into 3 sets of 20 specimen pairs (medium to light shades, medium to dark shades, and dark shades), were selected for psychophysical experiment. The coordinating center and seven research sites obtained the Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals prior the beginning of the experiment. Each research site had 25 observers,…

Technical and economical comparison between different topologies of PV plant under mismatch effect

2014

This paper presents a technical and economical comparative analysis between two topology of photovoltaic plant. In particular the performances of series-parallel (SP) and total cross tied (TCT), topologies are taken into account, referring to a partially shaded photovoltaic plant. Thanks to a simulation model developed, in the paper the mismatch effects due to three different shading conditions, for SP and TCT topology plant, are quantified. Since the TCT solution, even though increase the energy production, raise the complexity of plants as well as their costs, an evaluation of the individual costs of each component of a SP and TCT plant topology, as PV modules, support structure, inverter…

Variable-Radius Offset Surface Approximation on the GPU

2020

Variable-radius offset surfaces find applications in various fields, such as variable brush strokes in 2D and 3D sketching and geometric modeling tools. In forensic facial reconstruction the skin surface can be inferred from a given skull by computing a variable-radius offset surface of the skull surface. Thereby, the skull is represented as a two-manifold triangle mesh and the facial soft tissue thickness is specified for each vertex of the mesh. We present a method to interactively visualize the wanted skin surface by rendering the variable-radius offset surfaces of all triangles of the skull mesh. We have also developed a special shader program which is able to generate a discretized vol…
