About adapting Conrad's prose to film

On the example of Apocalypse Now by F. F. Coppola, Heart of Darkness by N. Roeg, The Duellists by R. Scott, The Shadow Line by A. Wajda, and Secret Sharer by P. Fudakowski, I would like to show that Joseph Conrad’s prose is a cinematic trap for film directors. This being so, I attempt to answer the question as to why it is so difficult to make a film of something that is so cinematic, when it is being read, and why film adaptations that closely follow Conrad’s narratives are less Conradian than films which are “merely” inspired by Conrad’s works.

Tabu Search to Plan Schedules in a Multiskill Customer Contact Center

International audience; We have studied a realistic case of scheduling problem in a customer contact center, dealing with multiskill agents. Our model combines the last two steps of the standard approach by determining shifts and by assigning them to agents at the same time (scheduling and rostering). Moreover, we have considered realistic vacations, according to legal constraints and preferences of agents. We have envisioned entire weeks of work, with variable meal times and meal durations, without overtime. In this paper, we define the problem and describe a Tabu search based solution.

An android architecture for bio-inspired honest signalling in Human-Humanoid Interaction

Abstract This paper outlines an augmented robotic architecture to study the conditions of successful Human-Humanoid Interaction (HHI). The architecture is designed as a testable model generator for interaction centred on the ability to emit, display and detect honest signals. The growth of next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets poses a challenge to the alignment of reads to reference genomes in terms of alignment quality and execution speed. Some available aligners have been shown to obtain high quality mappings at the expense of long execution times. Translational medicine works through the definition of unmet medical needs, their understanding and final resolution. In this complex and multi-disciplinary process patients have always been regarded as "end-users" or no more than "data provider." Heritability of Lifetime Income

Using 15 years of data on Finnish twins, we find that 24% (54%) of the variance of women’s (men’s) lifetime income is due to genetic factors and that the contribution of the shared environment is negligible. We link these figures to policy by showing that controlling for education reduces the variance share of genetics by 5-8 percentage points; by demonstrating that income uncertainty has a genetic component half the size of its variance share in lifetime income; and by exploring how the genetic heritability of lifetime income is related to the macroeconomic environment, as measured by GDP growth and the Gini-coefficient of income inequality.

Using discourse markers to negotiate epistemic stance: A view from situated language use

Abstract In this paper, I analyse the usage of a discourse marker =mari, belonging to the epistemic paradigm attested in Upper Napo Kichwa (Quechuan, Ecuador). I show that the use of =mari indicates that the information is known well to the speaker, but also to some extent familiar to the addressee. In situated language use, the marker contributes to creating a knowing epistemic stance of the speaker. The analysis presented here is based on a 13-h documentary corpus of interactive Upper Napo Kichwa discourse, recorded on audio and video.
