Neutron and gamma-ray radiation fields characterisation in a 241Am–Be irradiator in view of its use as research testing tool

2020

Abstract A neutron irradiation facility based on four 241Am–Be sources, each one with an activity of 111 GBq, placed in Plexiglas pipes inside a tank filled with water used both as a moderator and a biological shielding, has been realized at the Engineering Department of Palermo University. In view of its use as a testing tool in various research activities, a characterisation of the irradiator has been carried out through the determination of neutron and gamma-ray flux profiles, the evaluation of the thermal to total neutron flux percentage ratio and of the epithermal neutron shaping factor. To this aim, results of a Monte Carlo (MCNP5 code) simulation based on a previously validated sourc…

The hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of D2(17)O and HD(17)O: Confirmation of the absolute nuclear magnetic shielding scale for oxygen

2015

Guided by theoretical predictions, the hyperfine structures of the rotational spectra of mono- and bideuterated-water containing (17)O have been experimentally investigated. To reach sub-Doppler resolution, required to resolve the hyperfine structure due to deuterium quadrupole coupling as well as to spin-rotation (SR) and dipolar spin-spin couplings, the Lamb-dip technique has been employed. The experimental investigation and in particular, the spectral analysis have been supported by high-level quantum-chemical computations employing coupled-cluster techniques and, for the first time, a complete experimental determination of the hyperfine parameters involved was possible. The experimental…

SU-FF-T-62: Dosimetric Evaluation of An Internal Shielding Used with a HDR Skin Applicator

2009

Purpose: The Valencia HDR skin applicators are accessories of the microSelectron HDR afterloading system (Nucletron) cup shaped to limit the dose to the irradiation area. Applicators sizes are: diameter 2 and 3 cm. The typical prescription depth is 3 mm. This work aims to evaluate the backscatter and electron contamination of an internal shielding used to reduce the dose to the ocular globe when the lesion is located at the eyelid. Monte Carlo(MC) and experimental methods have been used. Method and Materials: The geometry has been: the Valencia applicator (2 cm diameter) on the surface of a solid polystyrene slab phantom; inside, a 2 mm lead slab located at 3 mm depth. MC simulation charact…

Study of a Novel High Permeability Ferrite Sheet Intended for Near Field Communication Systems

2019

The reduction of embedded portable devices involves a magnetic field interference problem when it integrates Near Field Communication (NFC) due to the presence of conductive surfaces such as ground planes, batteries or metallic enclosures. This contribution is focused on analyzing the ability of an innovative magnetic shielding based on flexible sintered ferrite sheets (FSFS) with the aim of improving the performance of that kind of systems. Thereby, a NFC emitter antenna is characterized when it is close to a conductive surface through an electromagnetic (EM) scanner. The EM scanner composed by a matrix of near field probes that make it possible to determine the effectiveness of the FSFS. …

Gamma-induced background in the KATRIN main spectrometer

2019

The KATRIN experiment aims to measure the effective electron antineutrino mass $$m_{\overline{\nu }_e}$$ mν¯e with a sensitivity of $${0.2}\,{\hbox {eV}/\hbox {c}^2}$$ 0.2eV/c2 using a gaseous tritium source combined with the MAC-E filter technique. A low background rate is crucial to achieving the proposed sensitivity, and dedicated measurements have been performed to study possible sources of background electrons. In this work, we test the hypothesis that gamma radiation from external radioactive sources significantly increases the rate of background events created in the main spectrometer (MS) and observed in the focal-plane detector. Using detailed simulations of the gamma flux in the e…

The experimental facility for the Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS

2019

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 $\mathrm{\small GeV/c}$ proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived superweakly interacting particles…

1H and 13C shielding measurements in comparison with DFT calculations performed for two 2-(acetyloamino)-N,N-dimethyl-3-phenylacrylamide isomers

2015

Abstract We present measurements of 1H and 13C shielding for (2E)- and (2Z)-2-(acetyloamino)-N,N-dimethyl-3-phenylacrylamide isomers in solutions. Practically the same values of the shielding were obtained using internal and external referencing. For the interpretation, we explore DFT calculations of shieldings performed at the rovibrationally averaged geometries. The comparison of the experimental and theoretical results is verified both for the shielding and chemical shift. It appears that some inaccuracies in the calculations of the chemical shift can be reduced due to the error compensation while subtracting the reference shielding. As shown the measurement of magnetic shielding can be …

Status of ITER TBM port plug conceptual design and analyses

2014

The test blanket module port plug (TBM PP) consists of a TBM frame and two TBM-sets. However, at any time of the ITER operation, a TBM set can be replaced by a dummy TBM. The frame provides a standardized interface with the vacuum vessel (VV)/port structure and provides thermal isolation from the shield blanket. As one of the plasma-facing components, it shall withstand heat loads while at the same time provide adequate neutron shielding for the VV and magnet coils. The frame design shall provide a stable engineering solution to hold TBM-sets and also provide a mean for rapid remote handling replacement and refurbishment. This paper presents main design features of the conceptual design of …

Analysis of EMI Shielding Effectiveness for plastic fiber composites in the 5G sub-6 GHz band

2021

The study and modeling of EMC are becoming more critical than ever due to the ubiquitous presence of electronic circuits in all aspects of our lives. Specifically, it is crucial to extend these studies to the new frequencies that, in a few years, will be a reality in modern telecommunications systems, such as 5G and its derived technologies. A specific critical field where the proper EMI shielding has been ensured to avoid EMC problems is the electric autonomous vehicles (EAVs). The huge number of electronics systems in new vehicles will dramatically extend the demands on the EMI shielding solutions used to attenuate the radiated emissions that could affect circuits in the vehicle. Metals o…
