The role of arbuscular mycorrhiza in reducing Cd stress was investigated in three genotypes of Pisum sativum L. (cv. Frisson, VIR4788, VIR7128), grown in soil/sand pot cultures in the presence and absence of 2-3 mg kg(-1) bioavailable Cd, and inoculated or not with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices. Shoot, root and pod biomass were decreased by Cd in non-mycorrhizal plants. The presence of mycorrhiza attenuated the negative effect of Cd so that shoot biomass and activity of photosystem II, based on chlorophyll a fluorescence, were not significantly different between mycorrhizal plants growing in the presence or absence of the heavy metal (HM). A Multiplicity result for a class of strongly indefinite asymptotically linear second order systems

We prove a multiplicity result for a class of strongly indefinite nonlinear second order asymptotically linear systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The key idea for the proof is to bring together the classical shooting method and the Maslov index of the linear Hamiltonian systems associated to the asymptotic limits of the given nonlinearity.
Efficient formulation of a two-noded geometrically exact curved beam element

The article extends the formulation of a 2D geometrically exact beam element proposed by Jirasek et al. (2021) to curved elastic beams. This formulation is based on equilibrium equations in their integrated form, combined with the kinematic relations and sectional equations that link the internal forces to sectional deformation variables. The resulting first-order differential equations are approximated by the finite difference scheme and the boundary value problem is converted to an initial value problem using the shooting method. Optimal nonlinear damping control of second-order systems

Novel nonlinear damping control is proposed for the second-order systems. The proportional output feedback is combined with the damping term which is quadratic to the output derivative and inverse to the set-point distance. The global stability, passivity property, and convergence time and accuracy are demonstrated. Also the control saturation case is explicitly analyzed. The suggested nonlinear damping is denoted as optimal since requiring no design additional parameters and ensuring a fast convergence, without transient overshoots for a non-saturated and one transient overshoot for a saturated control configuration.
Assessing 4th Grade Students’ Computational Thinking through Scratch Programming Projects

Computational thinking (CT) has been introduced in primary schools worldwide. However, rich classroom-based evidence and research on how to assess and support students’ CT through programming are particularly scarce. This empirical study investigates 4th grade students’ (N = 57) CT in a comparatively comprehensive and fine-grained manner by assessing their Scratch projects (N = 325) with a framework that was revised from previous studies to aim towards enhancing CT. On the numerical solution of some finite-dimensional bifurcation problems

We consider numerical methods for solving finite-dimensional bifurcation problems. This paper includes the case of branching from the trivial solution at simple and multiple eigenvalues and perturbed bifurcation at simple eigenvalues. As a numerical example we treat a special rod buckling problem, where the boundary value problem is discretized by the shooting method.
