Optimal modalities for radiative transfer-neural network estimation of canopy biophysical characteristics: Evaluation over an agricultural area with …
2011
International audience; Neural networks trained over radiative transfer simulations constitute the basis of several operational algorithms to estimate canopy biophysical variables from satellite reflectance measurements. However, only little attention was paid to the training process which has a major impact on retrieval performances. This study focused on the several modalities of the training process within neural network estimation of LAI, FCOVER and FAPAR biophysical variables. Performances were evaluated over both actual experimental observations and model simulations. The SAIL and PROSPECT radiative transfer models were used here to simulate the training and the synthetic test dataset…

Chromoendoscopy with indigocarmine improves the detection of adenomatous and nonadenomatous lesions in the colon.
2001
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Depressed early cancers and flat adenomas have a high potential for malignancy with possible infiltrating growth, despite the small size of the lesion. Japanese investigators have shown that early diagnosis and classification of these lesions is possible with the help of chromoendoscopy. The aim of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the usefulness of chromoendoscopy during routine colonoscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS During routine colonoscopy, vital staining with indigocarmine solution (0.4 %, 1 - 10 ml) was performed on all visible lesions in 100 consecutive patients without visible inflammatory changes. If findings on macroscopic examination were unremarkable, …
Age-dependent shift-to-the-right in the localization of colorectal adenomas.
1987
The age-dependent prevalence and topographical distribution of colorectal adenomas was investigated in 1006 unselected autopsies (554 males and 452 females) in Mainz, FRG. In 200 out of 1006 autopsies (19.8%) a total of 498 adenomas of the large intestine were detected. The percentage of patients with adenomas increased continuously with age. Only 6% of all adenomas were localized in the caecum and 8% in the rectum, whereas all the other adenomas were distributed rather evenly throughout the ascending colon (23%), the transverse colon (25%), the descending colon (15%) and the sigmoid colon (23%). Analyzing the topographical distribution of adenomas for definite age groups (40-59, 60-69, 70-…
Amplitude, Latency, and Peak Velocity in Accommodation and Disaccommodation Dynamics
2017
The aim of this work was to ascertain whether there are differences in amplitude, latency, and peak velocity of accommodation and disaccommodation responses when different analysis strategies are used to compute them, such as fitting different functions to the responses or for smoothing them prior to computing the parameters. Accommodation and disaccommodation responses from four subjects to pulse changes in demand were recorded by means of aberrometry. Three different strategies were followed to analyze such responses: fitting an exponential function to the experimental data; fitting a Boltzmann sigmoid function to the data; and smoothing the data. Amplitude, latency, and peak velocity of …
Delayed Coloanal Anastomosis for rectovaginal fistula after colorectal resection for deep endometriosis
2016
The deep infiltrating endometriosis, defined as a subperitoneal infiltration of endometrial implants of ≥ 5 mm involving not only the colorectal tract but also rectovaginal septum, vagina and bladder often requires a challenging surgery. Endometriosis nodes of the rectovaginal septum, if symptomatic, need a resection of the involved colorectal tract with colorectal or coloanal anastomosis. Unfortunately in these cases is not uncommon the possibility of a postoperative rectovaginal fistula (RVF), caused by the weakness of the septum that must be skeletonized to completely remove the endometriosis nodes. Here we present a case of anastomotic leakage with high RVF after colorectal resection an…
Strategies for reconstruction after unsuccessful or unsatisfactory primary treatment of patients with bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias.
1999
Following unsuccessful or unsatisfactory primary treatment in patients with the epispadias/exstrophy complex, the options for a surgical solution to preserve the upper urinary tract, to achieve complete continence, and to reconstruct the external and female internal genitalia are limited. We reviewed the records of the patients treated at our institution to determine a surgical compromise between ingenious operative constructions and patient desires, both of which are secondary to stabilization of renal function. From 1967 to December 1997, 128 patients with bladder exstrophy/epispadias complex were treated, of 80 whom had received previous unsuccessful or unsatisfactory treatment. Of these …
Conversion from colonic conduit into recto-sigmoid pouch (Mainz pouch II)
2005
The Mainz Pouch II has now been used widely and found to be a valuable addition to the various types of urinary diversion. The authors from Mainz describe how a colonic conduit can be converted into a Mainz Pouch II, and the expected outcome from such a procedure. OBJECTIVE To report our long-term results of conversion from conduit conversion into a continent anal urinary diversion, as after conduit urinary diversion in childhood, some patients wish to have a later conversion to a continent diversion to avoid external appliances and to improve their quality of life. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1992 and 2003, 139 patients had a urinary diversion with a recto-sigmoid pouch (Mainz pouch II), …
The Fate Of The Adult Exstrophy Patient
1994
Between 1968 and 1993, 101 patients with bladder exstrophy or incontinent epispadias underwent surgery at our hospital. The standard procedure was ureterosigmoidostomy and additional genital reconstruction. Of the 56 patients who have reached adulthood 45 could be interviewed regarding social integration, sexuality and fertility. All patients have a functioning urinary diversion. Of the 45 patients questioned 41 have completed vocational training or are currently in training, 3 are unemployed and 1 lives at a therapeutic center. Among the patients 29 are married or have a steady partner. All women engage in sexual intercourse and 2 have delivered 3 children by cesarean section. All men achi…
