The Usability of the Annotation

2016

Several corpus projects for sign languages have tried to establish conventions and standards for the annotation of signed data. When discussing corpora, it is necessary to develop a way of considering and evaluating holistically the features and problems of annotation. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework for the evaluation of the usability of annotations. The purpose of the framework is not to give conventions for annotating but to offer tools for the evaluation of the usability of the annotation, in order to make annotations more usable and make it possible to justify and explain decisions about annotation conventions. Based on our experience of annotation in the corpus proje…

summary — The modern mummies and the inner meaning of the double burial in Mediterranean cultures have long been debated. In this paper we discuss a particular “collection” of ecclesiastical bodies mummifed and displayed in a small mountain town of Sicily Gangi in the Madonie Mountains. The bodies dating back to the nineteenth century mummifed by pouring in the tradition of the time and carefully dressed in robes are exposed in the lower foor of the Chiesa Madre in what the tradition is called “fossa dei parrini” (pit of priests). The mummies unlike other Sicilian and Mediterranean sites are accompanied by commemorative sonnet and death mask made of fnish wax. The primary interest of our study was aimed specifcally at this particular manifestation of the double burial complex which lies in the representation of the face. The work expresses an examination of the concept of death mask in antiquity and leads to the conclusion that the place for its scenic values ritualization should be designed to the ostentation and the consolidation of the image of the Church and of the his power within the small rural society.Settore BIO/08 - Antropologia

Sémiotique et critique de la culture

2017

Emotions in Technology Design

2020

Understanding emotions is becoming ever more valuable in design, both in terms of what people prefer as well as in relation to how they behave in relation to it. Approaches to conceptualising emotions in technology design, how emotions can be operationalised and how they can be measured are paramount to ascertaining the core principles of design.Emotions in Technology Design: From Experience to Ethics provides a multi-dimensional approach to studying, designing and comprehending emotions in design. It presents emotions as understood through basic human-technology research, applied design practice, culture and aesthetics, ethical approaches to emotional design, and ethics as a cultural frame…

2022

During the talk we will give a necessary and sufficient condition for the uniqueness of a penalized least squares estimator whose penalty term is a polyhedral norm. Our results cover many methods including the OSCAR, SLOPE and LASSO estimators as well as the related method of basis pursuit. The geometrical condition for uniqueness involves how the row span of the design matrix intersects the faces of the dual normunit ball. Theoretical results on sparsity by LASSO and basis pursuit estimators are deduced from this condition via the characterization of accessible sign vectors for these two methods.
