Time, frequency and information domain analysis of short-term heart rate variability before and after focal and generalized seizures in epileptic chi…

2019

OBJECTIVE In this work we explore the potential of combining standard time and frequency domain indexes with novel information measures, to characterize pre- and post-ictal heart rate variability (HRV) in epileptic children, with the aim of differentiating focal and generalized epilepsy regarding the autonomic control mechanisms. APPROACH We analyze short-term HRV in 37 children suffering from generalized or focal epilepsy, monitored 10 s, 300 s, 600 s and 1800 s both before and after seizure episodes. Nine indexes are computed in time (mean, standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals, root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD)), frequency (low-to-high frequency power rati…

The paper analyses the impact that the recent inclusion of the environment in the Italian Constitution may have in the criminal law both with respect to the criminally relevant notion of the environment and with regard to the selection of the types of criminal offences. From this point of view the paper also takes into consideration the penal significance of the new bond of intergenerational ecological solidarity. Following the file rouge of the “bene giuridico” the second part of the essay is instead dedicated to the description of the critical points and the possible developments of international environmental criminal law in the light of a conception of the environment as a common and universal legal good.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

The presence of Juniperus sabina L. an Eurasian element is recorded from southern Italy where it has been found in two sites on Mt. Pollino. In Italy this species was so far reported only from the Alps and a few localities of central Apennines. Therefore the finding on Mt. Pollino largely widens its distribution southwards in the Italian Peninsula. As regards Europe J. sabina reaches lower latitudes only in southern Spain. The Authors stress the phytogeographical significance of the sites which are characterized from the floristic and ecological viewpoint.Settore BIO/02 - Botanica Sistematica

Tumor hypoxia and therapeutic resistance

2008

For many years, the identification of tumor hypoxia, its systematic characterization and the assessment of its clinical relevance were not possible due to the lack of methods suitable for the routine measurement of intratumoral oxygen tensions in patients. In the late 1980s, a novel and clinically applicable standardized procedure was established enabling the determination of tumor oxygenation in accessible primary tumors, local recurrences, and metastatic lesions in patients using a computerized polarographic needle electrode system (Vaupel et al. 1991; Hockel et al. 1991). Within a relatively short period of time, the significance of tumor oxygenation for therapy outcome became evident in…

Tumor Oxygenation and Its Relevance to Tumor Physiology and Treatment

2003

For many years, the identification of tumor hypoxia, its systematic characterization and the assessment of its clinical relevance were not possible due to lack of methods suitable for the routine measurement of intratumoral oxygen tensions in patients. In the late 1980s, a novel and clinically applicable standardized procedure was established enabling the determination of the tissue oxygenation status in primary tumors, local recurrences, and metastatic lesions in patients using a computerized polarographic needle electrode system. Within a relatively short period of time, the significance of tumor oxygenation for therapy outcome became evident in numerous experimental and clinical studies.

487 The Influence of Inhaled Corticotherapy on the Growth and Development in Asthmatic Children

2012

Background Inhaled corticotherapy is the main anti-inflammatory controller type therapy in asthmatic children. Impaired growth as a result of long-term corticotherapy remains a disputed issue of topical interest for both endocrinologists, pneumologists and pediatricians. Objective The study evaluates the influence of long term small dose inhaled corticotherapy on growth and somatic development in asthmatic children. Methods Observational analytical study on 2 samples of subjects. The study group: 100 asthmatic children with small dose inhaled corticotherapy (beclomethasone dipropionate Becotide 200–400 µg/day or fluticasone propionate Flixotide 100–300 µg/day), for 24 months therapy. The co…

Effect of psychological stress on orthodontic tooth movement in rats

2010

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of psychological stress on orthodontic tooth movement in Wistar rats. Materials and methods: Forty-eight female ten-week old Wistar rats with an average weight of 188 ±12 gr were selected and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received crowded environment-induced and cat odour stresses 4 weeks before spring insertion. On the 29th day in both groups, maxillary incisors were moved by the insertion of springs and exactly after 7 days, 9 rats from each group and after 14 days the remaining rats were sacrificed. Then the mesioincisal distance between maxillary incisors was measure…

The Relationship Between Tooth Size Discrepancy and Archform Classification in Orthodontic Patients

2015

Background: To determine the relationship between clinically significant tooth size discrepancies (TSD) and archform classification in orthodontic patients. Material and Methods: Two hundred and forty consecutive sets of pre-treatment orthodontic study models were scanned and landmarked. All models had permanent teeth erupted from first molar to first molar in both arches. Sixty sets of images were classified into two groups of 30 according to the presence (group 1) or absence (group 2) of a clinically significant overall or anterior TSD (>2 SD from Bolton’s original means). Mean upper and lower archforms were created for each group using a fourth degree polynomial curve. Upper and lower ar…

Growth and defense in deciduous trees and shrubs under UV-B

2005

Abstract Reflection by waxy or resinous surface structures and hairs, repair reactions of biomolecules and induction of different sheltering components provide the means of plant protection from harmful solar UV-B radiation. Secondary products, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids as defense components are also important in plant tolerance to UV-B, fulfilling the dual role as screens that reduce UV-B penetration in plant tissues, and as antioxidants protecting from damage by reactive oxidant species. Plants are sensitive to UV-B radiation, and this sensitivity can be even more clone-specific than species-specific. The results available in the literature for deciduous trees and shrubs in…
