Hemostasis and ageing
2008
Abstract On March 19, 2008 a Symposium on Pathophysiology of Ageing and Age-Related Diseases was held in Palermo, Italy. The lecture of D. Mari on Hemostasis and ageing is summarized herein. Physiological ageing is associated with increased plasma levels of many proteins of blood coagulation together with fibrinolysis impairment. This may be of great concern in view of the known association between vascular and thromboembolic diseases and ageing. On the other hand, centenarians are characterized by a state of hypercoagulability and possession of several high-risk alleles and well-known atherothrombotic risk markers but this appears to be compatible with longevity and/or health. Parameters c…
Systemic inflammatory response in erderly patients following hernioplastical operation
2006
Abstract The number of old and oldest old patients undergoing surgery of varying severity is increasing. Ageing is a process that changes the performances of most physiological systems and increases susceptibility to diseases and death; accordingly, host responses to surgical stress are altered with ageing and the occurrence of age-related increase in susceptibility to post-operative complications has been claimed. Twenty-four male patients undergoing Lichtenstein (LH) hernioplasty for unilateral inguinal hernia were included in this study and divided in two groups (Young and Old respectively), according to their age. As expression of the acute phase response, we measured changes in concent…
2017
This study reviews research publications topically related to day centres for people with mental health problems. The purposes are to give a general overview of the evidence-based knowledge in the field, to detect gaps of knowledge, and to throw light on the following research questions: (1) Which ideologies about day centres may be revealed in Scandinavian- and English-speaking research on day centres for people with mental health problems; and (2) What significance do the day centres have for the users? Both questions are answered by examining 34 research publications, printed in either Scandinavian or English languages during the period 1962-2015. An integrative literature review was used…
Efficacy of the laser at low intensity on primary burning oral syndrome: a systematic review.
2020
Background Primary burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic clinical condition of idiopathic mainly characterized by pain and a burning sensation in the oral cavity. The application of laser at low intensity therapy is a treatment option. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy of laser therapy in treating symptoms of burning mouth syndrome. Material and Methods The study was formulated according to the PRISMA and Cochrane guidelines. Seven databases were used as primary sources of research. Only randomized controlled clinical trials were included. The efficacy of the therapy was estimated comparing the values of the visual and numerical scales of pain before and after laser treatmen…
Modeling Political Corruption in Spain
2021
Political corruption is a universal phenomenon. Even though it is a cross-country reality, its level of intensity and the manner of its effect vary worldwide. In Spain, the demonstrated political corruption cases that have been echoed by the media in recent years for their economic, judicial and social significance are merely the tip of the iceberg as regards a problem hidden by many interested parties, plus the shortage of the means to fight against it. This study models and quantifies the population at risk of committing political corruption in Spain by identifying and quantifying the drivers that explain political corruption. Having quantified the problem, the model allows changes to be …
HEMATOLOGICAL VARIABILITY ANALYSIS AFTER ROAD MARATHON VS ULTRATRAIL. PREDICTIVE FACTORS
2020
The practice of long- and medium-distance races has exponentially increased the number of participants in recent years. They are carried out under extreme conditions that cause both biochemical and anthropometric changes in athletes and, in addition, have serious risks associated, such as dehydration, thermal disorders, or hypoglycemia. Knowledge regarding alterations at hematological level after this type of effort is limited. The objectives of this pre-post analytical descriptive observational study were: to describe and compare hematological values in amateur runners pre and post road marathon and ultratrail races, and to compare the hematological parameters between the groups in the two…
The differential effects of thiazolidindiones on atherogenic dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes: what is the clinical significance?
2008
Diabetic dyslipidemia is typically characterized by an increase in plasma triglycerides, a decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and a concomitant increase in atherogenic small dense low-density lipoproteins. Thiazolidindiones are able to lower the levels of fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin significantly by improving insulin sensitivity, as well as improving some aspects of diabetic dyslipidemia: total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol tend to increase while triglycerides are generally decreased. This paper reviewed the effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone on atherogenic diabetic dyslipidemia, in particular on sma…
Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Clinical Practice: Clinical Relevance of Circadian Rhythm and Nocturnal Dip
2012
Blood pressure (BP) variability and terms like dipper and nondipper are now common in daily practice. Several mechanisms underlie abnormalities in circadian variability. Sympathetic overactivity, reduced sensibility of baroreceptors, volume overload, and primary or secondary autonomic dysfunction are the most important factors related to abnormalities in circadian variability. The level of nighttime BP drop has been related to the absolute level of BP elevation, the global cardiovascular risk, the presence of comorbidities, and the type and time of administration of antihypertensive treatment. The relative importance of circadian variability or nocturnal BP as a prognostic factor raise not …
Pulsatile and steady 24-h blood pressure components as determinants of left ventricular mass in young and middle-aged essential hypertensives
2003
In order to explore the relations between left ventricularmass (LVM) and the pulsatile (pulse pressure) andsteady (mean pressure) components of the bloodpressure (BP) curve, 304 young and middle-agedessential hypertensive patients were studied by meansof 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring and echocardio-graphy. In the overall study population, both the BPcomponents showed significant correlations with LVM.These correlations were unevenly distributed in thesubgroups of subjects younger and in those older than50 years. While in this latter subgroup, in multivariateanalysis, both 24-h mean BP (24-MBP) (b¼0.27;P¼0.008) and 24-h pulse pressure (24-h PP) (b¼0.23;P¼0.02) were associated with LVM, in th…
