The Spiral of Silence a Theory of Public Opinion
1974
Returning to classical statements on the concept of public opinion, I have tried to substantiate empirically the process o f public opinion formation through the individual’s observation of his or her social environment. Of all the pertinent statements by Tocqueville (S), Tiinnies (9), Bryce (4), and Allport (l), I can mention here only Allport’s example of a process of public opinion: the pressure brought to bear on householders in a neighborhood to shovel the snow from their sidewalks. This example illustrates that social conventions, customs, and norms are included, along with political questions, among the “situations” and “proposals of significance” with which a large number of people …
Forgetting to Remember: The Press Discourse, the Cold War and Conjunctures of Remembrance
2011
The first ‘memory wave’ of the Holocaust, largely based on the depictions of the liberation of the camps and the Nuremberg Trial, was coming to an end in the late 1940s.1 This period, sometimes called the ‘Nuremberg interregnum’,2 was also shaped by discussion relating to the Jewish DPs, the creation of Israel and its aftermath, as this this book has shown. As the Palestine issue became less acute and faded from daily news, talk of the Holocaust also vanished from the public domain. Consequently, the disappearance of the Holocaust from the public eye marked the beginning of a cultural amnesia that lasted, as the dominant historical wisdom now has it, until the 1960s.3 On the other hand, it …
Book and Radio Play Silences: Medial Pauses and Reticence in ‘Murke's Collected Silences’ by Heinrich Böll
2019
This article analyses silence at the interface between print and audio media by reading and listening to Heinrich Böll's short story ‘Murke's Collected Silences’ (‘Doktor Murkes gesammeltes Schweigen’) in its book (1958) and three German-language radio play versions (1965; 1986; 1989). Reference is also made to Benjamin Gwilliam's sound art piece (2007) based on the 1986 adaptation. The Böll story thematises silence and media in various ways, and has definite countertextual aspects, in the sense of technology, textuality, and materiality of language. In the printed story, silence is either verbally named or typographically indicated, whereas the radio plays present or perform it. The compa…

Naturalistic music and dance: Cortical phase synchrony in musicians and dancers
2018
Expertise in music has been investigated for decades and the results have been applied not only in composition, performance and music education, but also in understanding brain plasticity in a larger context. Several studies have revealed a strong connection between auditory and motor processes and listening to and performing music, and music imagination. Recently, as a logical next step in music and movement, the cognitive and affective neuro-sciences have been directed towards expertise in dance. To understand the versatile and overlapping processes during artistic stimuli, such as music and dance, it is necessary to study them with continuous naturalistic stimuli. Thus, we used long exce…
Working Memory Function in Children with Single Side Deafness Using a Bone-Anchored Hearing Implant: A Case-Control Study
2018
The importance of a good hearing function to preserve memory and cognitive abilities has been shown in the adult population, but studies on the pediatric population are currently lacking. This study aims at evaluating the effects of a bone-anchored hearing implant (BAHI) on speech perception, speech processing, and memory abilities in children with single side deafness (SSD). We enrolled <i>n</i> = 25 children with SSD and assessed them prior to BAHI implantation, and at 1-month and 3-month follow-ups after BAHI implantation using tests of perception in silence and perception in phonemic confusion, dictation in silence and noise, and working memory and short-term memory function…

Phenomenological ontology of breathing : the phenomenologico-ontological interpretation of the barbaric conviction of we breathe air and a new philos…
2018
The general topic of my philosophical dissertation is phenomenological ontology of breathing. I do not investigate the phenomenon of breathing as a natural scientific problem, but as a philosophical question. Within our tradition, breathing has been normally understood as a mechanistic-materialistic physiological life-sustaining process of gas exchange and cellular respiration which does not really seem to have any essential connection to human being’s spiritual, mental or philosophical capacities. On the contrary to this natural scientific view, I argue that breathing can be understood as a philosophical question that has phenomenological, experiential, ontological, spiritual, bodily, ment…
La formazione spirituale del bambino secondo Maria Montessori
2022
This paper presents a Maria Montessori’s unprecedented and little known aspect: it is her attention to the child’s spiritual education. Although for a long time her educational method was considered a positivist method, today some critics recognize in her view the presence of an educational theory of interiority that starts from an universal and cosmic perspective: in the children’s homes is created a space where the secrets of the spiritual life man’s are revealed. Education for a cosmic peace, meditative silence, social education through meditative work shared in a community way, are some practices with wich the child begins a path of spiritual education that makes him aware of his own se…
