Experimental results on adsorption beds for air dehumidification

Desiccant rotors are commonly used in large scale solar cooling open cycle applications. As is well known, adsorption heat sensibly reduces the dehumidification capacity of the desiccant material and results in lower system performance. The aim of this work is to describe an innovative solution that permits simultaneous mass and heat transfer. In particular, two components working with silica gel fixed beds were studied and compared. The first component is a simple packed bed containing silica gel grains. Anthrylmethylamine functionalised mesoporous silica-based materials as hybrid fluorescent chemosensors for ATP

A number of functionalised mesoporous solids containing anchored anthrylmethylamine groups have been prepared using different co-hydrolysis or grafting synthetic routes. The solids have been characterised using standard solid-state techniques. Solids with a low loading of the anthrylmethylamine probe show typical well defined and structured emission bands centred at ca. 415 nm. Addition of ATP to suspensions of these solids at pH 2.8 resulted in a quenching of the anthracene emission. These solids showed a cooperative effect that resulted in quite a remarkable improvement in ATP response with respect to the free anthrylmethylamine probe in solution. Preparation of Hg2+ selective fluorescent chemosensors based on surface modified core–shell aluminosilicate nanoparticles

A synthetic procedure for the preparation of functional structured inorganic–organic hybrid materials consisting of boehmite-silica core–shell nanoparticles and anthracene-containing amines covalently attached to the nanoparticles surface is reported. The system functionalised with the monoamine chain shows a very high sensing performance for Hg2+ detection in pure water reaching a detection limit of 0.2 ppb. Two additional advantages of these systems are their stability over a wide pH window and the feasibility to be recovered by a simple procedure.

Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Oxygen-Containing Derivatives and Metabolites in Soils

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been extensively studied, the knowledge of their oxygen-containing derivatives and metabolites (OPAHs) in soils is limited. We modified and tested an existing analytical protocol involving pressurized liquid extraction of soil followed by fractionation of target compounds into PAHs and OPAHs on a silica gel column and gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry-based separation and quantification. Contributions to the analysis of organic xenobiotics in fish

For the residue-analysis of fish samples, a method has been developed to separate the medium polar triazines and acetamides together with lipophilic xenobiotics (organochlorine pesticides, PCBs and octachlorostyrene) from fish tissue. The detection limits of the analytes are mostly within the ppt-range (ng/kg fillet) and vary between 40 and 1050 ng/kg fillet of fish. Their recoveries range from 75 to 108%, spiked at 1.5 μg/kg. The substances are extracted with a mixture of petroleum ether/ethylacetate (2:1) using a soxhlet apparatus. Subsequently, the lipids in the sample extracts are reduced to 0.4% by gel chromatography. Analysis of insoluble silicate: Decomposition with molten sodium hydroxide and determination of Zr(IV) with chloranilic acid in medium-strong acid

A rapid, accurate and precise method for the determination of zirconium in silicates is proposed. Insoluble or sparingly soluble samples are decomposed by means of molten sodium hydroxide. Chloranilic acid is employed as reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of Zr(IV). The limit of detection is 1.2×10−7 M and the relative standard deviation is 0.24%.

Separation of plasma membrane proteins of cultured human fibroblasts by affinity chromatography on bonded microparticulate silicas.

Abstract Adsorbents for high-performance affinity chromatography were prepared by bonding proteins and reactive Procion triazine dyes to 3-isothiocyanatopropyl- and 3-aminopropylsilicas. The materials prepared were used successfully in the separation of hydrophobic plasma membrane proteins of cultured human fibroblasts. The data obtained show that the reaction of 3-isothiocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ITCPS) with the surface hydroxyl groups of silica yields a new and convenient route to preparing an “activated carrier” that is capable of coupling with potential affinity ligands containing amino functional groups. The iron oxidation state in silicate melts is important for understanding their physical properties, although it is most often used to estimate the oxygen fugacity of magmatic systems. Often high spatial resolution analyses are required, yet the available techniques, such as μrXANES and μMössbauer, require synchrotron access. Halloysite nanotubes for efficient loading, stabilization and controlled release of insulin

Hypothesis: Oral insulin administration is not actually effective due to insulin rapid degradation, inactivation and digestion by proteolytic enzymes which results in low bioavailability. Moreover insulin is poorly permeable and lack of lipophilicity. These limits can be overcome by the loading of protein in some nanostructured carrier such as halloysite nanotubes (HNTs).
