The cytotoxic evaluation of mineral trioxide aggregate and bioaggregate in the subcutaneous connective tissue of rats

2013

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the cytotoxic effects of ProRoot MTA and DiaRoot BA, a bioceramic nanoparticulate cement, on subcutaneous rat tissue. Study D esign: Fifty Sprouge Dawley rats were used in this study. Polyethylene tubes filled with ProRoot MTA and DiaRoot BioAggregate, along with a control group of empty, were implanted into dorsal connective tissue of rats for 7, 15, 30, 60, and 90 days. After estimated time intervals the rats were sacrificed. The specimens were fixed, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and then evaluated under a light microscope for inflammatory reactions and mineralization. Results: All groups evoked a severe to moderate …

Comparison of two histopathologic methods for evaluating subcutaneous reaction to mineral trioxide aggregate

2011

Objectives: One of the most important factors for suitable materials for pulp therapy is biocompatibility. Two histopathologic methods of Cox and Federation Dentaire International (FDI) were used to evaluate inflammation. In Cox method, density of inflammatory cells, tissue reactions like fibrosis, vascular responses like congestion and fibrin extravasation have been used to evaluate inflammatory reactions. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of pathologists’ interpretations using two different methods. Study design: Three pathologists observed the degree of inflammation in 225 histopathologic sections. These sections showed inflammation in subcutaneous connective tissue of ra…

Repair of bone defect by nano-modified white mineral trioxide aggregates in rabbit: a histopathological study

2014

Background: Many researchers have tried to enhance materials functions in different aspects of science using nano-modification method, and in many cases the results have been encouraging. To evaluate the histopathological responses of the micro-/nano-size cement-type biomaterials derived from calcium silicate-based composition with addition of nano tricalcium aluminate (3CaO.Al 2 O 3 ) on bone healing response. Material and Methods: Ninety mature male rabbits were anesthetized and a bone defect was created in the right mandible. The rabbits were divided into three groups, which were in turn subdivided into five subgroups with six animals each based on the defect filled by: white mineral tri…

Periodontal Treatment with an Er:YAG Laser or Scaling and Root Planing. A 2-Year Follow-Up Split-Mouth Study

2003

Non-surgical periodontal treatment with an Er:YAG laser has been shown to result in significant clinical attachment level gain; however, clinical results have not been established on a long-term basis following Er:YAG laser treatment. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to present the 2-year results following non-surgical periodontal treatment with an Er:YAG laser or scaling and root planing.Twenty patients with moderate to advanced periodontal destruction were treated under local anesthesia, and the quadrants were randomly allocated in a split-mouth design to either 1) Er:YAG laser (ERL) using an energy level of 160 mJ/pulse and 10 Hz, or 2) scaling and root planing (SRP) using han…

Aqueous Solubility Diagrams for Cementitious Waste Stabilization Systems. 4. A Carbonation Model for Zn-Doped Calcium Silicate Hydrate by Gibbs Energ…

2002

A thermodynamic Gibbs energy minimization (GEM) solid solution-aqueous solution (SSAS) equilibrium model was used to determine the solubility of Zn from calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) phases doped with 0, 0.1, 1, 5, and 10% Zn at a unity (Ca+Zn)/Si molar ratio. Both the stoichiometry and standard molar Gibbs energy (G(o)298) of the Zn-bearing end-member in the ideal ternary Zn-bearing calcium silicate hydrate (CZSH) solid solution were determined by a "dual-thermodynamic" (GEM-DT) estimation technique. The SSAS model reproduces a complex sequence of reactions suggested to occur in a long-term weathering scenario of cementitious waste forms at subsurface repository conditions. The GEM model …

Bioinspired synthesis of multifunctional inorganic and bio-organic hybrid materials

2012

Owing to their physical and chemical properties, inorganic functional materials have tremendous impacts on key technologies such as energy generation and storage, information, medicine, and automotive engineering. Nature, on the other hand, provides evolution-optimized processes, which lead to multifunctional inorganic–bio-organic materials with complex structures. Their formation occurs under physiological conditions, and is goverened by a combination of highly regulated biological processes and intrinsic chemical properties. Nevertheless, insights into the molecular mechanisms of biomineralization open up promising perspectives for bioinspired and biomimetic design and the development of …

Musica e architettura.

September 13th 1956, Stravinsky conducted at the basilica of St. Mark in Venice the first performance of the "…

Characterization and properties of PEO coatings on 7075 Al alloy grown in alkaline silicate electrolyte containing KMnO 4 additive

2017

Abstract Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) was used to modify the surface of 7075 Al alloy by applying a bipolar pulsed-current in a silicate based electrolyte containing 0 to 3 g L− 1 KMnO4. For the coating produced in the base electrolyte, crystalline γ-Al2O3 was the main phase, while the coatings formed at the presence of KMnO4 consisted of α-Mn2O3 containing Si and Al oxides. A pancake structure was observed on surface of the coating produced in the base electrolyte, while a foam feature along with some volcano-like areas was detected on the surface of the coatings produced in the presence of KMnO4. The KMnO4 changed the discharge type leading to diminish the pores at the metal/coatin…

Sintering process of amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles investigated by AFM, IR and Raman techniques

2011

We report an experimental investigation on the effects of thermal treatments at different temperatures (room-1270 K) and for different duration (0-75 h) on amorphous silica nanoparticles (fumed silica) in powder tablet form. Three types of fumed silica are considered, comprising nearly spherical particles of 40 nm, 14 nm and 7 nm mean diameter. The experimental techniques used here are Raman and infrared absorption (IR) spectroscopy together with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman and IR spectra indicate that the structure of nanometer silica particles is significantly different with respect to that of a bulk silica glass. In particular, the main differences regard the positions of the IR…

Novel strategic approach for the thermo- and photo- oxidative stabilization of polyolefin/clay nanocomposites

2017

Polyolefin/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing and their oxidative stability was studied under long-term thermo- and photo-oxidative test conditions in the absence and presence of a modified organo montmorillonite clay (OM-MMt) containing a chemically-bound hindered phenol antioxidant function, (AO)OM-Mt. It was found that nanocomposites based on both polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (PEgMA) containing the (AO)OM-Mt gave a higher oxidative stability, along with better clay dispersion, compared to analogous PE or PEgMA-based nanocomposites containing an added (free) conventional antioxidant with a similar hindered phenol function (using the commercial …
