Effect of Hydration Procedure of Fumed Silica Precursor on the Formation of Luminescent Carbon Centers in SiO 2 :C Nanocomposites

The effect of hydration procedure of fumed silica precursor on photoluminescent properties of carbonized silica (SiO2:C) nanocomposite after chemo/thermal treatments is studied. Main structural effect is the formation of chemical bonding of phenyl groups to silica surface via multiple CSiO bonding bridges. Synthesized samples demonstrate very broad photoluminescence (PL) bands in near ultraviolet and visible ranges with maximum intensity dependent on temperature of thermal annealing. Ultralow-intensity near-infrared light induces drug delivery by upconverting nanoparticles

Mesoporous silica coated upconverting nanoparticles are loaded with the anticancer drug doxorubicin and grafted with ruthenium complexes as photoactive molecular valves. Drug release was triggered by 974 nm light with 0.35 W cm(-2). Such low light intensity minimized overheating problems and prevented photodamage to biological samples.
Overview of radiation induced point defects in silica-based optical fibers

International audience; Silica-based optical fibers, fiber-based devices and optical fiber sensors are today integrated in a variety of harsh environments associated with radiation constraints. Under irradiation, the macroscopic properties of the optical fibers are modified through three main basic mechanisms: the radiation induced attenuation, the radiation induced emission and the radiation induced refractive index change. Depending on the fiber profile of use, these phenomena differently contribute to the degradation of the fiber performances and then have to be either mitigated for radiation tolerant systems or exploited to design radiation detectors and dosimeters. Gd 3+ -doped sol-gel silica glass for remote ionizing radiation dosimetry

Gadolinium-doped silica glass was prepared, using the sol-gel route, for ionizing radiation dosimetry applications. Such a glassy rod was drawn to a cane at a temperature of 2000 °C. The structural and optical properties of the obtained material were studied using Raman, optical absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Thereafter, a small piece of this Gd-doped scintillating cane was spliced to a transport passive optical fiber, allowing the remote monitoring of the X-ray dose rate through a radioluminescence (RL) signal. Abstract The investigation of the thermal stability up to 400 °C of Graphene Oxide (GO) and GO-silica nanoparticles (n-SiO2) composites prepared by direct mixture of GO and n-SiO2 is reported. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis, Atomic Force Microscopy, Raman and Infrared absorption measurements a thorough characterization of the prepared materials is carried out. By deepening the changes induced in the 2D Raman spectral region of GO at about 2900 cm−1 the comprehension of an interplay, driven by the thermally induced changes of the material, between inter-valley and intra-valley vibrational transitions is elucidated. Abstract Packed pebble beds are granular systems composed of small particles generally arranged in irregular lattices and surrounded by a gas filling their interstitial spaces.
