Acetylcholinesterase-Capped Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles That Open in the Presence of Diisopropylfluorophosphate (a Sarin or Soman Simulant)
2016
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with rhodamine B and capped with acetylcholinesterase are able to be selectively opened and deliver their cargo in the presence of nerve agent simulant diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP).
Electric strength, space charge and surface discharge characterization of nanostructured epoxy-silicate insulating materials
2005
A set of surface discharge ageing procedures, space charge observations and dielectric strength measurements has been implemented on a type of insulating nanofilled epoxy-resin (nanostructured by compatibilised synthetic layered silicates) and on its non-filled base resin. Promising improvements in the electrical behaviour of the nanofilled epoxy, particularly as concerns surface discharge endurance, were detected. Regarding space charge, it was found that its accumulation rate as a function of ageing time is lower for the nanostructured resin. Finally, the nanofilled material evidenced a highly homogeneous behaviour of the dielectric strength data distribution.
The effect of silica nanoparticles on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of polycarbonate
2012
Abstract Polycarbonate/silica nanocomposites with different silica quantities were prepared by a melt compounding method. The effect of silica amount, in the range 1–5 wt.%, on the morphology, mechanical properties and thermal degradation kinetics of polycarbonate (PC) was investigated. Clusters of silica nanoparticles were well dispersed in the polycarbonate whose structure remained amorphous. NMR results showed intermolecular interactions involving the carbonyl groups of different polymeric chains which did not affect the intramolecular rotational motions. The presence of the lowest silica content showed a decrease in the storage and loss moduli below the glass transition temperature, pro…
UV-stabilisation of polystyrene-based nanocomposites provided by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)
2012
Abstract The photo-ageing behaviour of Polyhedral Oligomeric SilSequioxane (POSS)-polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites has been investigated for the first time. POSS having different inorganic framework and pendant organic groups have been used in the PS nanocomposite preparation and the formulated films were subjected to accelerated weathering. Compared to pristine PS, the POSS-containing PS developed a lower level of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as a function of the exposure time, indicating a significantly improved resistance of the nanocomposites to photo-degradation. The results suggest that all of the investigated POSS molecules play a protective role and may extend the in-use lifetime of …
Mn 12 single-molecule magnets incorporated into mesoporous MCM-41 silica
2003
Abstract The incorporation of four Mn12 derivatives, namely [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (R=CH3 (1), CH3CH2 (2), C6H5 (3), C6F5 (4)), into the hexagonal channels of the MCM-41 mesoporous silica have been studied. Only the smallest clusters 1 and 2 that are those with compatible size with the pores of MCM-41 could be incorporated into the mesoporous silica. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm experiments show that the well-ordered hexagonal structure of MCM-41 is preserved and that the Mn12 clusters are inside the pores. The magnetic properties of the MCM-41/1 nanocomposite material indicate that the structure of the cluster is maintained after incorporat…
