Ferricytochrome c encapsulated in silica hydrogels: correlation between active site dynamics and solvent structure.

2003

Ferricytochrome c encapsulated in silica hydrogels has been prepared by the sol-gel technique following, with some modifications, the procedure originally developed by Ellerby et al. (Science 255 1113 (1992)). A suitable preparation of hydrogels enables having both 'wet' and 'dry' samples. Wet samples have a high water content: as the temperature is lowered below approximately 260 K, water freezes and the samples crack. On the contrary, dry samples have a low water content (hydration h approximately equal 0.35): in these conditions water does not freeze even at cryogenic temperatures and the samples remain transparent and non-cracking. The dynamics of ferricytochrome c and its dependence on…

Interactions of silica nanoparticles with lung epithelial cells and the association to flotillins

2012

Amorphous silica nanoparticles (aSNPs) gain increasing popularity for industrial and therapeutic claims. The lung with its surface area of 100-140 m(2) displays an ideal target for therapeutic approaches, but it represents also a serious area of attack for harmful nanomaterials. The exact nature of the cytotoxic effects of NPs is still unknown. Furthermore, cellular pathways and the destiny of internalized NPs are still poorly understood. Therefore, we examined the cytotoxicity (MTS, LDH) and inflammatory responses (IL-8) for different-sized aSNPs (30, 70, 300 nm) on our lung epithelial cells line NCI H441 and endothelial cell line ISO-HAS-1. Additionally, colocalization studies have been c…

Wear of Ceramic Tools When Working Nickel Based Alloys

1996

In order to improve the toughness of alumina materials, various trials have recently been made. These include toughening by the addition of zirconia and of significant amounts of titanium carbide to ceramic oxide Al2O3 and the more recent use of nitride based ceramics, which have resulted in an increase of fracture toughness and in a significant improvement of ceramic tool performance. Another very recent way of improving ceramic materials consists in adding SiC whiskers to Al2O3 matrix. This composite material is also suitable for machining nickel based alloys. In order to evaluate and to qualify these materials some test cycles have been carried out in continuous cutting conditions, emplo…

A free plate model can predict guided modes propagating in tubular bone-mimicking phantoms

2014

The goal of this work was to show that a non-absorbing free plate model can predict with a reasonable accuracy guided modes measured in bone-mimicking phantoms that have circular cross-section. Experiments were carried out on uncoated and coated phantoms using a clinical axial transmission setup. Adjustment of the plate model to the experimental data yielded estimates for the waveguide characteristics (thickness, bulk wave velocities). Fair agreement was achieved over a frequency range of 0.4 to 1.6 MHz. A lower accuracy observed for the thinnest bone-mimicking phantoms was caused by limitations in the wave number measurements rather than by the model itself.

Inverse nonlinear design in silicon waveguides

2014

Absorption of oxybutynin from vaginal inserts: drug blood levels and the response of the rabbit bladder.

2000

Abstract Objectives. Oxybutynin has been used for treatment of urge urinary incontinence for more than 20 years. However, one of the major problems with its use is uncomfortable anticholinergic side effects that can lead to discontinuation of treatment. Alternative forms of drug administration may reduce side effects and thus improve patient compliance. Methods. A cylinder-shaped, curved silicone elastomer insert containing oxybutynin was anchored in the vagina of female rabbits. The inserts were designed to release oxybutynin at rates of 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 mg/day, respectively. Blood drug and metabolite levels were monitored for 1 to 7 days and cystometry was carried out after 7 days of tre…

Modeling and simulation of a High Pressure Roller Crusher for silicon carbide production

2011

Author's version of a chapter published in the book: 11th International Conference on Electrical Power Quality and Utilisation. Also available from the publisher at: http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=6128963&tag=1 This paper describes the modeling and simulation of High Pressure Roller Crusher (HPRC) for the production of silicon cabide grains. The study is to make a model for simulation of a High Pressure Roller Crusher. A High Pressure Roller Crusher (HPRC) is an important part in the production of silicon carbide, where the grains are crushed into powder form and then sieved into specified sizes based on its usage. This paper will present a model based on Johanson's…
