On the Relationship between Jetted Inks and Printed Biopatterns:Molecular-Thin Functional Microarrays of Glucose Oxidase

Arrays of circular spots of glucose oxidase have been obtained on functionalized silicon oxide by piezoelectric inkjet printing and the enzymatic activity toward glucose recognition has been monitored. The addition of glycerol to the molecular ink allows to obtain high spot definition and resolution (tens of micrometers wide; one molecule tall), but in spite of its well-known structural stabilizing properties, in dynamic conditions it may lead to increased protein stresses. AbstractIn this study, yeast, Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria were attached to silicon dioxide microparticles or silica in order to measure their absorbance, also known as physical absorption of light, changes using spectrophotometry. The goal of the study was to determine if spectrophotometry is an effective way to distinguish microorganisms and if microorganisms have an affinity for silicon dioxide since it is a suitable material for the production of prostheses. El uso de sustancias para el aumento de tejidos blandos por motivos estéticos puede ocasionar la aparición de granulomas a cuerpo extraño, entre otros efectos indeseables. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of glass ionomer and adhesive cements on SP expression in healthy human dental pulp. Study Design: Forty pulp samples were obtained from healthy premolars where extraction was indicated for orthodontic reasons. In thirty of these premolars a Class V cavity preparation was performed and teeth were equally divided in three groups: Experimental Group I: Glass Ionomer cement was placed in the cavity. Experimental Group II: Adhesive Cement was placed in the cavity. Positive control group: Class V cavities only. WOx phase growth on SiO2/Si by decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl:Influence of potassium on supported tungsten oxide phases

International audience; Synchrotron based photoemission spectroscopy was used to study the adsorption of tungsten hexacarbonyl on SiO2 surfaces modified by potassium. Results were compared with the ones obtained when no potassium was present. Experiments using W4f and Si2p intensities variations show that, at 140 K, the tungsten hexacarbonyl growth proceeds via a simultaneous multilayer mode for the two kinds of surfaces but with differences in compositions of growing layers. 2D Waveguided Bessel Beam Generated Using Integrated Metasurface-Based Plasmonic Axicon.

International audience; Near-field imaging of the propagation of a diffraction-free Bessel-type beam in a guided wave configuration generated by means of a metasurface-based axicon lens integrated on a silicon waveguide is reported. The operation of the axicon lens with a footprint as small as 11 μm2 is based on local engineering of the effective index of the silicon waveguide with plasmonic nanoresonators. This generic approach, which can be adapted to different types of planar lightwave circuit platforms, offers the possibility to design nano-engineered optical devicesbased on the use of plasmonic resonators to control light at the nanoscale.

Investigations of Surface Forces between Gypsum Microcrystals in Air Using Atomic Force Microscopy

This article introduces a new approach to the study of the interactions between gypsum faces in air. We have mounted a gypsum crystal on the end of a microcantilever to measure local forces (van der Waals, capillary forces, electrostatic) directly between two crystals. A systematic study with respect to the orientation of crystalline faces, relative humidity, and the duration of contact between crystals improves the understanding of the mechanism involved in the hardening of plaster in air. Comparative cytotoxic study of silica materials functionalised with essential oil components in HepG2 cells

[EN] This work evaluated the cytotoxic effect of different EOCs-functionalised silica particle types. The in vitro toxicity of eugenol and vanillin-immobilised SAS, MCM-41 microparticles and MCM-41 nanoparticles was evaluated on HepG2 cells, and compared to free EOCs and pristine materials. The results revealed that free essential oil components and bare silica had a mild cytotoxic effect on HepG2 cells. However, the comparative study showed that free eugenol and vanillin had a milder cytotoxic effect than the equivalent concentrations of immobilised components on the different silica particles, while differences in cell viability between the bare and functionalised particles relied on the …

Atmospheric pressure plasma polymerisation of metalloporphyrins containing mesoporous membranes for gas sensing applications

Abstract Metalloporphyrins are embedded in an organosilicon matrix by an easily up-scalable atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge method. The integrity of the metalloporphyrins, followed by UV–visible spectroscopy, is successfully preserved and their aggregation prevented. The single molecule properties, rather than the bulk ones, are thus enhanced. Exposure to triethylamine, which reaches the metalloporphyrins through the pores of the organosilicon membrane, led to a shift in the absorption spectrum and confirms the gas sensing potential of such coatings.
