2D photonic defect layers in 3D inverted opals on Si platforms

2006

Dielectric spheres synthesised for the fabrication of self-organized photonic crystals such as opals offer large opportunities for the design of novel nanophotonic devices. In this paper, we show a hexagonal superlattice monolayer of dielectric spheres inscribed on a 3D colloidal photonic crystal by e-beam lithography. The crystal is produced by a variation of the vertical drawing deposition method assisted by an acoustic field. The structures were chosen after simulations showed that a hexagonal super-lattice monolayer in air exhibits an even photonic band gap below the light cone if the refractive index of the spheres is higher than 1.93.

Atomic layer deposition of ferroelectric LiNbO3

The ferroelectric and electro-optical properties of LiNbO3 make it an important material for current and future applications. It has also been suggested as a possible lead-free replacement for present PZT-devices. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique offers controlled deposition of films at an industrial scale and thus becomes an interesting tool for growth of LiNbO3. We here report on ALD deposition of LiNbO3 using lithium silylamide and niobium ethoxide as precursors, thereby providing good control of cation stoichiometry and films with low impurity levels of silicon. Ionic-liquid doped polymeric composite as passive colorimetric sensor for meat freshness as a use case.

Abstract A composite membrane containing 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt (NQS) embedded in an ionic liquid (IL)- polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)- SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) polymeric matrix is proposed. The selected IL was 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (OMIM PF6). It is demonstrated that ILs chemical additives of PDMS influenced the sol-gel porosity. Highly Homogeneous 2D/3D Heterojunction Diodes by Pulsed Laser Deposition of MoS2 on Ion Implantation Doped 4H-SiC

In this paper, 2D/3D heterojunction diodes have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of MoS2 on 4H-SiC(0001) surfaces with different doping levels, i.e., n− epitaxial doping (≈1016 cm−3) and n+ ion implantation doping (>1019 cm−3). After assessing the excellent thickness uniformity (≈3L-MoS2) and conformal coverage of the PLD-grown films by Raman mapping and transmission electron microscopy, the current injection across the heterojunctions is investigated by temperature-dependent current–voltage characterization of the diodes and by nanoscale current mapping with conductive atomic force microscopy. A polarimetric sensor based on nanoporous free standing membranes

A polarimetric sensor with state of the art sensitivity is developed using free standing porous silicon membranes. The use of an optimized etching receipt greatly reduces the pore roughness. Depolarization factors are thus limited and material birefringence is increased. Free standing membranes are fabricated in n-type substrates and characterized both from the optical and structural point of view. The proposed approach is fully CMOS compatible and can therefore pave the way to the development of cheap microarray that exploits multiplexing capabilities while keeping the amount of analyte required by the analysis down to the microliter level.

A Sensitive Nanosensor for the In Situ Detection of the Cannibal Drug.

[EN] A bio-inspired nanodevice for the selective and sensitive fluorogenic detection of 3,4- methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), usually known as Cannibal drug, is reported. The sensing nanodevice is based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), loaded with a fluorescent reporter (rhodamine B) and functionalized on their external surface with a dopamine derivative (3), which specifically interacts with the recombinant human dopamine transporter (DAT), capping the pores. In the presence of MDPV, DAT detaches from the MSNs consequently causing rhodamine B release and allowing drug detection. Superior Fischer-Tropsch performance of uniform cobalt nanoparticles deposited into mesoporous SiC

Electrochemically-derived well-crystalline mesoporous silicon carbide (pSiC) was used as a host for cobalt nanoparticles to demonstrate superior catalytic performance during the CO hydrogenation according to Fischer-Tropsch. Colloidal Co nanoparticles (9 ± 0.4 nm) were prepared independently using colloidal recipes before incorporating them into pSiC and, for comparison purposes, into commercially available silica (Davisil) as well as foam-like MCF-17 supports. The Co/pSiC catalyst demonstrated the highest (per unit mass) catalytic activity of 117 µmol.g(CO)-1.g-1(Co).s-1 at 220 °C which was larger by about one order of magnitude as compared to both silica supported cobalt catalysts. Dynamical and statistical properties of high-temperature self-propagating fronts: An experimental study

International audience; We present a detailed experimental study of high-temperature self-propagating fronts using image processing techniques. The intrinsic features of the wave propagation are investigated as a function of the combustion temperature TC for a model system made of titanium and silicon powders. Different front behavior is realized by changing the molar ratio x of the mixture Ti+xSi. Outside the range x=[0.3,1.5], no thermal front is propagating while inside, three regimes are observed: steady-state combustion which is characterized by a flat front propagating at constant velocity and two unsteady regimes. Role of murine macrophages and complement in experimental campylobacter infection

Summary. The roles of macrophages and the complement system as potential host defence mechanisms in mice against campylobacter infection were studied in vivo, by depleting the murine serum-complement or the phagocytic cells. Macrophage-depletion was performed by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of silica dust, Liquoid or dextran sulphate. During 5 days after infection, such mice showed a significant increase in mortality, compared with controls. In contrast, mice that were previously decomplemented by i.p. injection of Cobra Venom Factor showed no significant increase in mortality. Rifampin-impregnated silicone catheters: a potential tool for prevention and treatment of CSF shunt infections.

Background: Infection continues to be one of the major complications of cerebro-spinal fluid shunting procedures. Recent insights in the pathophysiological mechanism of these foreign body infections have elucidated the difficulty of achieving successful treatment without device removal.
