Association between IgM Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus and Plasma Amyloid-Beta Levels.

2011

International audience; OBJECTIVE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation has been identified as a possible risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and plasma amyloid-beta (Aβ) levels might be considered as possible biomarkers of the risk of AD. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between anti-HSV antibodies and plasma Aβ levels. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 1222 subjects (73.9 y in mean) from the Three-City cohort. IgM and IgG anti-HSV antibodies were quantified using an ELISA kit, and plasma levels of Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42) were measured using an xMAP-based assay technology. Cross-sectional analyses of the associations between anti-HSV antibodies and plasma …

A contribution to the linear programming approach to joint cost allocation: Methodology and application

2009

Abstract The linear programming (LP) approach has been commonly proposed for joint cost allocation purposes. Within a LP framework, the allocation rules are based on a marginal analysis. Unfortunately, the additivity property which is required to completely allocate joint costs fails in presence of capacity, institutional or environmental constraints. In this paper, we first illustrate that the non allocated part can be interpreted as a type of producer’s surplus. Then, by using the information contained in the Simplex tableau we propose an original two-stage methodology based on the marginal costs and the production elasticity of input factors to achieve an additive cost allocation pattern…

A purification algorithm for semi-infinite programming

1992

Abstract In this paper we present a purification algorithm for semi-infinite linear programming. Starting with a feasible point, the algorithm either finds an improved extreme point or concludes with the unboundedness of the problem. The method is based on the solution of a sequence of linear programming problems. The study of some recession conditions has allowed us to establish a weak assumption for the finite convergence of this algorithm. Numerical results illustrating the method are given.

Mixed vaginal infections of Balb/c mice with low virulent herpes simplex type 1 strains result in restoration of virulence properties: vaginitis/vulv…

1997

Vaginal infections of BALB/c Ann mice with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) were studied. Mice were inoculated with virulent strains ANG path and 17 syn+ or low-virulent recombinant strains 27/III and 17-syn3 that differ from parental strains in their glycoprotein B (gB) gene sequences. When low-virulent strains were inoculated separately, no vaginitis/vulvitis was produced despite replication in the vagina. In contrast, after coinfection of mice with the two low-virulent strains, vaginitis/vulvitis was produced and virus could be recovered from the central nervous system (CNS). Two of the CNS isolates produced vaginitis/vulvitis, neuroinvasiveness and death of mice after vaginal infecti…

Overcoming drug resistance in HSV, CMV, HBV and HCV infection.

2015

Although vaccination has provided as a very efficient preventive tool, antiviral therapy is still needed to control viral infections not avoidable by prophylaxis with vaccines; those caused by viruses for which a vaccine is available, but vaccination is not universally implemented or does not result in complete, long-term protection; and in immunocompromised individuals with reduced immune control of viral replication. After more than 50 years of the first licensing for an antiherpetic drug, novel compounds for herpes-simplex viruses and human cytomegalovirus will open new strategies for better control and management of these two recurrent viral infections. Besides, the development and use…

Anisakis pegrefii and Anisakis simplex sensu strictu in Mediterranean sea

2014

BACKGROUND: Anisakiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by ingestion of nematode larvae belonging to Anisakidae family, following consumption of raw, undercooked or improperly processed fish. Mediterranean sea represent an aquatic ecosystem particularly suitable for the development of Anisakid larvae. The aim of this work is to found intra-species and inter-species nucleotide differences by phylogenetic analysis in this geographical area. METHODS: In the period from January to November 2013, 584 fish from Mediterranean sea were screened, and they were found parasitised of 6318 type I anisakid larvae. Fish were eviscerated and observed by stereo microscope to collect larvae relived in the vis…

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.

2020

Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…

Number IV Erythema multiforme

2005

Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute mucocutaneous hypersensitivity reaction characterised by a skin eruption, with or without oral or other mucous membrane lesions. Occasionally EM may involve the mouth alone. EM has been classified into a number of different variants based on the degree of mucosal involvement and the nature and distribution of the skin lesions. EM minor typically affects no more than one mucosa, is the most common form and may be associated with symmetrical target lesions on the extremities. EM major is more severe, typically involving two or more mucous membranes with more variable skin involvement - which is used to distin- guish it from Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), …

HSV hepatitis in the mouse: A light and electron microscopic study with immunohistology and in situ hybridization

1988

In order to characterize better the morphology and immune response in acute necrotizing HSV infection, murine HSV hepatitis was examined. BALB/c mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with 10(6) plaque-forming units (PFU) of HSV-1 (Lenette) and HSV-2 (D316). In both groups half the animals were pretreated with silica particles to block macrophage function. Up to 6 days after infection four mice from each group were sacrificed at daily intervals and the livers were examined by light and electron microscopy, immunohistology, in situ hybridization, combined immunohistology/in situ hybridization and titration of viral PFU. HSV-2 infected mice developed severe necrotizing hepatitis with persiste…
