Development of a Simulator for Prototyping Reinforcement Learning-Based Autonomous Cars
2022
Autonomous driving is a research field that has received attention in recent years, with increasing applications of reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms. It is impractical to train an autonomous vehicle thoroughly in the physical space, i.e., the so-called ’real world’; therefore, simulators are used in almost all training of autonomous driving algorithms. There are numerous autonomous driving simulators, very few of which are specifically targeted at RL. RL-based cars are challenging due to the variety of reward functions available. There is a lack of simulators addressing many central RL research tasks within autonomous driving, such as scene understanding, localization and mapping, pla…
A Rainfall Simulator Laboratory Approach to Determine the Impact of Ash Depth on Runoff Generation and Soil Losses
2020
Ash cover the forest fire affected soil for some weeks or months and act as a key factor to determine the soil and water losses. Ash depth is researched here to determine how affect the soil detachment and the runoff generation. Seventy rainfall simulation experiments on paired 0.50 m2 plots (five plots with 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15- and 30-mm ash depth), and repeated one week later) under thunderstorms of 48 mmh-1 for one hour were carried out under laboratory conditions. In the first experiment, after the bed of ash was applied, the results show that ash depth determines the runoff rates as they reduce the discharge from 23.1% to 13.9%. The sediment concentration increased from 23.8 till 38.…

Simuladores de lluvia y su aplicación a la Geomorfología : Estado de la cuestión
2013
During the last decades, Geomorphologists have developed a huge variety of scientific instruments as in the field as in the laboratory. Within the invented apparatus stand out the rainfall simulators, which have been used with different objectives since the 30s. His scientific benefit produced an increase in the variety of sizes, drop-formers, frames, rainfall characteristics, etc., for rainfall simulators based on drop former (tips) and on spray-nozzles systems. This paper reviews the history and the evolution of the rainfall simulators, and discusses the advantages and inconvenience of the simulated rainfall. We also point out the main uses: soil erosion rates measurements runoff, infiltr…
SimuRed: A flit-level event-driven simulator for multicomputer network performance evaluation
2009
The interconnection network is one of the most important multicomputer components, since it has a great impact on global system performance. Many models and simulators have been proposed to evaluate network performance. This paper presents SimuRed, an event-driven flit-level, cycle-accurate simulator to evaluate different orthogonal network configurations. The core of the simulator has been designed to be expandable and portable to different situations. Some of the advantages of this simulator over other similar tools are its visual interface, its fast execution and its simplicity. Moreover, it is multiplatform and its source code versions (C++ and Java) are freely available under GNU open-…

P2PRealm - Peer-to-Peer Network Simulator
2006
Peer-to-peer realm (P2PRealm) is an efficient peer-to-peer network simulator for studying algorithms based on neural networks. In contrast to many simulators, which emphasize on detailed network simulation, the speed of simulation in P2PRealm is essential, because neural networks require a time consuming training phase. Efficiency has been obtained by optimizing training loops inside the simulator, using Java native interface (JNI) as well as distributing the simulator to hundreds of workstations using the P2PDisCo platform. In this paper we describe the architecture of P2PRealm and its input/output interfaces. Also, we present the mechanisms used for internally optimizing the implementatio…
Theoretical prediction of rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator
2022
In this contribution, a theoretical approach was developed for predicting rainfall intensity for a small rainfall simulator. The developed equation was tested for two different devices and different pressure head and water temperature values. The proposed relationship was found to have a good predictive ability of rainfall intensity. The proposed theoretical approach could be usable with other devices that operate on the same principles of the simulator considered in this investigation.
Laparoscopic assistance by operating room nurses: Results of a virtual-reality study
2016
Abstract Background Laparoscopic assistance is often entrusted to a less experienced resident, medical student, or operating room nurse. Data regarding laparoscopic training for operating room nurses are not available. Objectives The aim of the study was to analyse the initial performance level and learning curves of operating room nurses in basic laparoscopic surgery compared with medical students and surgical residents to determine their ability to assist with this type of procedure. Design The study was designed to compare the initial virtual reality performance level and learning curves of user groups to analyse competence in laparoscopic assistance. Participants The study subjects were…
Characterization of thin film CIG(S,SE)2 submodules using solar simulator and laser beam induced current techniques (Versione estesa)
2015
In this work, the electrical and optical characterization of CIG(S, Se)2 sub-modules using both a solar simulator equipment and the Laser Beam Induced Current (LBIC) technique is presented. By using the solar simulator and a proper set-up, the electrical parameters of the modules at varying irradiance and temperatures are determined. In addition, the LBIC measurements are carried out to analyze the 2D photocurrent uniformity of the modules at two different wavelengths. Dispersion values of extracted parameters can be very useful for practically tuning the modelling stage at device/module level.
