The reliability and validity of the sport engagement instrument in the Finnish dual career context
2021
Although engagement is key to predicting burnout and dropout, few existing instruments measure this phenomenon in the sports context. As part of a larger three-year Lower Secondary Sports Schools Pilot Project (LSSSPP) in Finland, we conducted two studies as part of the present research with the major aims of (a) constructing the Sport Engagement Instrument (SpEI) and (b) validating the new instrument in the Finnish dual career context. In the preparatory study, an expert panel constructed the SpEI, a questionnaire comprising 37 items intended to measure cognitive and affective sports engagement. The main study utilised questionnaire data collected from two independent samples (n1 = 992 and…
Employer branding as a form of sport event sponsorship : the case of a multinational industrial firm
2017
The growth of new industry sectors and the ascent of burgeoning economies have increased competition between companies to secure a skilled workforce. To ensure competitiveness in these rapidly changing markets, companies have striven to build successful branding strategies. Although employer branding is becoming a popular trend in the world of practicing managers and scholars, perspectives are still evolving. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of employer branding from the perspective of a business-to-business (B2B) multinational company´s (thereafter, “the case company”) current employees. In this study, a sport sponsorship project acted as an employer branding acti…
Binding properties and stability of the Ras-association domain of Rap1-GTP interacting adapter molecule (RIAM).
2012
The Rap1-GTP interacting adapter protein (RIAM) is an important protein in Rap1-mediated integrin activation. By binding to both Rap1 GTPase and talin, RIAM recruits talin to the cell membrane, thus facilitating talin-dependent integrin activation. In this article, we studied the role of the RIAM Ras-association (RA) and pleckstrin-homology (PH) domains in the interaction with Rap1. We found that the RA domain was sufficient for GTP-dependent interaction with Rap1B, and the addition of the PH domain did not change the binding affinity. We also detected GTP-independent interaction of Rap1B with the N-terminus of RIAM. In addition, we found that the PH domain stabilized the RA domain both in …
Teachers' perceptions of student engagement and teacher self-efficacy beliefs
2014
This study examines the teachers’ perceptions of student engagement, teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs, and their interrelation. Affective engagement can be understood as belonging or relatedness as well as identification with school. Cognitive engagement can be conceived as engagement in classroom, self-regulation, learning goals and a student’s overall investment in learning. Measuring students’ engagement is crucial in that it helps educators predict and, by amending current teaching practices and policies, avoid poor performance or even drop-out. The teacher’s belief in herself and her potential is critical for the students’ overall performance in class. This study attempts to investigate…
Continuous play : leisure engagement in competitive fighting games and taekwondo
2023
In order to better understand the development of play and games in modern lives, this article examines two competitive leisure groups: digital fighting game players and traditional taekwondo practitioners. Drawing on qualitative offline/online interviews (n = 56) and close reading of externally documented life narratives (n = 14), we explore how the modes and motives of engagement fluctuate in competitive players over time. The study provides a new developmental approach to continuous competitive play as leisure. Our results show rather than making linear progress from ‘casual’ to ‘serious’ leisure, individuals in both groups perceive their lasting relationships with these activities gradua…
Teachers' Professional Identity Negotiations in Two Different Work Organisations
2008
Recent studies have described professional identity as the interplay between individual agency and social context. However, we need to understand how these are intertwined in different kinds of work settings. This paper focuses on teachers’ professional identity negotiations as involving the work organisation, the professional community and individual agency. The data were gathered from two work organisations representing different management cultures and sources of control over teachers’ work. Open-ended narrative interviews were used, focusing on teachers’ own experiences and perceptions. A data-driven qualitative analysis was applied. Our findings indicated that different work organisati…
The Roles of Adherence and Usage Activity in Adolescents' Intervention Gains During Brief Guided Online Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
2022
OBJECTIVEThis study investigated the roles of adherence and usage activity in adolescents’ (n = 161) gains during a 5-week web intervention program based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).METHODProgram adherence was calculated as adherence percentage in relation to intended usage, whereas completion percentage, usage time, and usage weeks were used as indicators for usage activity. Subjective well-being was measured by self-reported life satisfaction and stress before and after the intervention.RESULTSFirst, regression analysis results showed that higher adherence predicted an increase in life satisfaction during intervention. Second, three subgroups of adolescents were identified …
Luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden koulutusvalinta ja opintoihin sitoutuminen
2015

Tutkimukseni motivaatiota kartoittavassa osassa vertasin ammattiliittojen yhdistysaktiivien motiivikirjoa Yeungin (2005) luomaan vapaaehtoistoiminnan motivaatioiden timanttimalliin. Tutkimuksen aineistona käytin kahdeksaa ammattiyhdistysaktiivin teemahaastattelua. Haastatelluista neljä toimi yhdistystehtävän lisäksi myös työpaikka-aktiivina, joten pystyin vertaamaan myös näitä kahta erilaista yhdistysaktiivityyppiä toisiinsa. T…
