Motivational and Emotional Aspects Involved in Driving
2001
It is evident that individuals display different behaviors when driving and especially when involved in accidents. These differences seem to be related in various ways to physical, mental and socio-environmental characteristics of the driver. It is also known that a wide range of situational variables that are all too common in our daily lives, such as fatigue, use of drugs, alcohol or certain medication; sleepiness and transitory behavioral alterations such as stress or anxiety, have a negative influence on driving.
Education and the unity of the person
1996
The deeper meaning of education, says Dewey in his Human Nature and Conduct (1922), which distinguishes the justly honored profession from that of mere trainer, is that “a future new society of changed purposes and desires may be created by a deliberately humane treatment of the impulses of youth” (p. 69). For Dewey, “a truly humane education consists in an intelligent direction of native activities in the light of the possibilities and necessities of the social situation” (p. 70). Student impulse and interest are not to be suppressed nor continually vented in unrestrained expression. In view of the plasticity of youth, there is little danger that allowing the role of student interest will …

Diferències entre sexes en la resposta cardiovascular, hormonal i psicològica a una competició: Variables moduladores i facilitadors de la victòria
2018
Competition is a social interaction where there is a confrontation between individuals or groups to achieve an objective. In our society competition is present transversally, with consequences for individuals. Therefore, competition is considered a social stressor able to elicit important psychobiological responses. From an evolutionary perspective, it has been suggested that, against stress situations, men would be more likely to fight-and-flight, while women would be more likely to tend-and-befriend strategies. Consequently, different psychobiological response to competition can be described depending on sex. A large proportion of studies on competition were based on the biosocial status …
The role of reading difficulties in the associations between task values, efficacy beliefs, and achievement emotions
2018
The aim of this study was to examine the situational associations of reading-related task values and efficacy beliefs with achievement emotions, and whether these associations are moderated by reading difficulties (RD). The sample comprised 128 Finnish sixth-grade students (66 with no reading difficulties [No RD], 31 with mild reading difficulties [Mild RD], and 31 with severe reading difficulties [Severe RD]) who were randomized to complete either a non-challenging or challenging reading task. Students reported their reading-related task values (attainment and interest) and efficacy beliefs right before and their achievement emotions both before and after performing the reading task. The r…
Meeting others—supporting situation awareness on the WWW
2001
Abstract World Wide Web (WWW) techniques provide a simple interface, which is accessible almost everywhere. The WWW supports document sharing and information retrieval, but has no tools for direct user interaction, simply because the mechanisms to support user awareness are missing. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we present general concepts of situation awareness, which concerns the user interaction on the WWW platform, and a theoretical framework, which is used in examining existing awareness support systems. Second, we provide an analysis of PeopleAwarenessEngine, which supports situation awareness and enables user communication and collaboration on the WWW.
Short-Term Adaptation to Stress and Task-Demands: Covariation of Psychological and Physiological Manifestations
1986
Energetic aspects of adaptation to stress and task demands are reflected in autonomic and somatic nervous system (ANS/SNS) changes (see, eg Lyytinen, 1985). Related psychophysiological individual differences have been illustrated widely in the literature. The reported differences have varied from constitutional ones, like temperament (see, for recent references Nebylitsyn, 1972; Strelau, 1983), via dispositions/traits (Eysenck, 1983) and tonic states (Fahrenberg, Walschburger, Forster, Myrtek and Muller, 1983) to situation-dependent individual differences (eg research on type A; Contrada, Wright and Glass, 1984). The present paper argues that experimential and situational factors are import…
