Keywords and lexical bundles within English pharmaceutical discourse: A corpus-driven description
2015
Abstract Little attention has been paid so far to keywords and lexical bundles used in the English language typical of the pharmaceutical field. Conducted from a register-perspective (Biber & Conrad, 2009), this exploratory and descriptive research is intended to fill in the gap in corpus linguistics studies on phraseology and register variation within written English pharmaceutical discourse. More specifically, this empirical study presents a corpus-driven description of the use and functions of keywords (top-50 by keyness) complemented by a similar description of lexical bundles (top-50 by frequency) used across samples of patient information leaflets, summaries of product characteristics…
'Big Brother' Germany and Spain: a Linguistic Characterization from a Theory of Register
2020
2017
A comparative study on pragmatic mitigation in a corpus of colloquial conversations in Catalan has been conducted in this work. Its aim objective is to study mitigation in a contrastive way, that is to say, to examine the usage contrast of this pragmatic strategy amongst prototypical colloquial conversations and peripheral colloquial conversations. For this purpose, it was believed appropriate to previously explain conversational genre and colloquial register, that is to say, colloquial conversation and its characteristics. In order to conduct thus study, one’s own corpus has been complied (recorded and transcribed) consisting of five colloquial conversations: two prototypical ones and thre…
Disaster management in hospitals
1998
A disaster situation for a hospital occurs when the need for medical treatment overwhelms the actual hospital treatment capacity. 1 This may be defined by numerical or situational means; the threshold must always be the result of an individual assessment of the given health care unit. A disaster situation may also be defined as the point of no return to normal standard operating procedures in a certain hospital. In case of a disaster, health care units are required to have and activate a disaster management plan (DMP). In the USA the requirements of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) are trend-setting; in European countries, regulations are normall…
An Empirical Study Of Service Quality Dimensions On Customer Satisfaction And Customer Loyalty In Nepalese Commercial Banking Sector
2016
Master thesis Business Administration - University of Agder 2016 The main purpose behind of this study is to find out the major factors that have impact in customer satisfaction and customer loyalty in case of commercial banks of Nepal. The thesis tries to explore whether there exists any relationship between service quality dimensions, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty depending upon various situational factors. Various concepts such as consumer buying behavior, buyer’s decision process, customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, service quality, SERVQUAL model have been discussed along with relevant relationship between them in the literature review and based upon it, a conceptual …
Willingness to Communicate in L2 and Self-Perceived Levels of FL Skills in Polish Adolescents
2011
The willingness to communicate (WTC) construct, originally referring to individuals’ tendencies to engage in communication in the L1 when given the free choice (McCroskey and Richmond, Personality and interpersonal communication, Newbury Park, CA, pp. 129–156, 1987), can also be applied to a second language context (MacIntyre, Dornyei, Clement and Noels, Mod Lang J 82:545–562, 1998). It can then be defined as “a readiness to enter into discourse at a particular time with a specific person or persons, using a L2” (MacIntyre, Dornyei, Clement and Noels, Mod Lang J 82:545–562, 1998, p. 547). MacIntyre, Dornyei, Clement and Noels, (Mod Lang J 82:545–562, 1998) proposed a pyramid-shaped L2 WTC m…
The situational version of the Brief Cope: Dimensionality and relationships with goal-related variables
2015
This study is aimed at investigating the dimensionality of the situational version of the Brief COPE, a questionnaire that is frequently used to assess a broad range of coping responses to specific difficulties, by comparing five different factor models highlighted in previous studies. It also aimed at exploring the relationships among coping responses, personal goal commitment and progress. The study involved 606 adults (male = 289) ranging in age from 19 to 71. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we compared five models and assessed relationships of coping responses with goal commitment and progress. The results confirmed the theoretical factor structure of the situational Brief COPE. All…
Linking Situational Constraints to Customer Satisfaction in a Service Environment
2005
Improving problem solving and creativity through use of complex-dynamic simulations
2002
This article presents an instructional method to improve problem solving and creativity by employing computer-based simulations. The instructional method described is based upon empirical research conducted by the authors. The simulation presents contextually meaningful problem situations that require learners to analyze and prepare solution proposal(s). Following the learner input, the simulation assesses the proposal and offers back to the learners the consequences of their decisions while also iteratively updating the situational conditions. This type of simulation, unlike conventional simulations that are used for acquisition of knowledge, is complex-dynamic, requiring the learner to fu…
A MAS metamodel-driven approach to process fragments selection
2009
The construction of ad-hoc design processes is more and more required today. In this paper we present our approach for the construction of a new design process following the Situational Method Engineering paradigm. We mainly focus on the selection and assembly activities on the base of what we consider a key element in agent design processes: the MAS metamodel. The paper presents an algorithm establishing a priority order in the realization (instantiation) of MAS metamodel elements by the fragments that will compose the new process.
