Aqueous extracts from blackcurrant press cake (BC), Norway spruce bark (NS), Scots pine bark (SP), and sea buckthorn leaves (SB) were obtained using maceration and pressurized hot water and tested for their bioactivities. Maceration provided the extraction of higher dry matter contents, including total phenolics (TPC), anthocyanins, and condensed tannins, which also impacted higher antioxidant activity. NS and SB extracts presented the highest mean values of TPC and antioxidant activity. Individually, NS extract presented high contents of proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, and some phenolic acids. Conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran over CuNi catalysts supported on biobased carbon foams

In this study, carbon foams prepared from the by-products of the Finnish forest industry, such as tannic acid and pine bark extracts, were examined as supports for 5/5% Cu/Ni catalysts in the hydrotreatment of furfural to 2-methylfuran (MF). Experiments were conducted in a batch reactor at 503 K and 40 bar H2. Prior to metal impregnation, the carbon foam from tannic acid was activated with steam (S1), and the carbon foam from pine bark extracts was activated with ZnCl2 (S2) and washed with acids (HNO3 or H2SO4). The minor as major: Outsiderness and social class in Saara Turunen’s prose

Saara Turunen’s Sivuhenkilö is a work of autofiction, which tells the story of a year in its unnamed protagonist’s life. Despite her success as an author, the protagonist feels like a minor character in her own life: an outsider both because of her gender and her profession as a writer. In this article, I offer a critical reading of Turunen’s prose by asking what political implications are attached to her handling of outsiderness. I approach outsiderness not merely as a theme, but also as a genre-specific feature peculiar to the tradition of feminist rewriting. Maisterintutkielmassani tarkastelen, miten turvapaikanhakijoiden auttaminen rakentuu diskursiivisesti Facebookissa Refugees Welcome Keski-Suomi -sivulla. Euroopan pakolaiskriisin myötä Suomeen saapui viime vuonna yli 30 000 turvapaikanhakijaa, mikä synnytti kansalaisten keskuudessa auttamishalun, jollaista ei ole aikaisemmin Suomen mittakaavassa nähty. Tarkastelemani Facebook -sivu perustettiin turvapaikanhakijoiden auttamisen koordinoimiseksi.
