Depression and Serum Content of Serotonin in Adult Patients with Atopic Dermatitis

2020

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin disease with the etiology not yet conclusively established. Recent reports demonstrate the role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) in the pathogenesis of AD. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the serum content of serotonin and depression in adult patients suffering from severe AD. There were 31 patients of the median age of 41 years enrolled into the study, who suffered from AD since childhood, and a control group that consisted of 14 healthy subjects. AD was diagnosed on the basis of Hanifin and Rajka criteria. The severity of skin lesions was assessed with the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index and that o…

Photobleaching measurements of pigmented and vascular skin lesions: results of a clinical trial

2011

The autofluorescence photobleaching intensity dynamics of in vivo skin and skin pathologies under continuous 532 nm laser irradiation have been studied. Overall the 141 human skin malformations were investigated by laser induced skin autofluorescence photobleaching analysis. Details of equipment are described along with some measurement results illustrating potentiality of the technology.

Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus

2008

Lupus erythematosus (LE) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease, characterized by a heterogeneous clinical presentation. The skin lesions are one of the most frequent symptoms of the disease and present with a broad spectrum of LE-nonspecific and LE-specific cutaneous manifestations. Therefore, the development of a classification for skin lesions in the disease has proven difficult. For example, the LE-nonspecific cutaneous manifestations include livedo racemosa, thrombophlebitis, and leukocytoclastic vasculitis and can be associated with high disease activity and systemic organ involvement. The LE-specific cutaneous manifestations encompass the subtypes of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE…

Vascular Patterns in Dermoscopy

2012

Under the right conditions, dermoscopy allows us to observe the vascular features of many different types of skin lesions. The visualization and identification of vessels with a characteristic morphology can be the key to diagnosis, especially in hypopigmented lesions in which the typical pigmented structures are not visible. Some of the more characteristic associations are the presence of crown vessels in sebaceous hyperplasia, arborizing telangiectasias in basal cell carcinoma, comma-shaped vessels in intra- dermal and compound nevi, dotted vessels in Spitz nevi and melanoma, and hairpin vessels in seborrheic keratoses. The recognition of distinctive vascular features can be of great help…

Chloracne after release of TCDD at Seveso, Italy

1981

ABSTRACT The paper deals with clinical and epidemiological findings concerning persons showing skin lesions after release of TCDD at Seveso. A positive association was observed between geographical distribution of cases and levels of soil contamination. Gastro-intestinal tract impairments were more frequently observed in children with chloracne than in children from the same areas showing no skin lesions. To date, no major immunological involvement has been observed in samples of children exposed to TCDD.

Multi-spectral imaging analysis of pigmented and vascular skin lesions: results of a clinical trial

2011

A clinical trial comprising 266 pigmented lesions and 49 vascular lesions has been performed in three Riga clinics by means of multi-spectral imaging analysis. The imaging system Nuance 2.4 (CRI) and self-developed software for mapping of the main skin chromophores were used. The obtained results confirm clinical potential of this technology for non-contact quantitative assessment of skin pathologies.

Genetic diversity and phenotypic characterization of Iodobacter limnosediminis associated with skin lesions in freshwater fish

2021

The relatively unknown genus Iodobacter sp. has been repeatedly isolated from skin ulcers and saprolegniosis on freshwater fish in Finland, especially farmed salmonids. Genetic characterization verified that all 23 bacterial isolates studied here belonged to the species Iodobacter limnosediminis, previously undescribed from the fish microbiota. Whole-genome pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed variability between the I. limnosediminis strains, suggesting that they were most likely of environmental origin. Two I. limnosediminis strains caused lesions in 27%–53% of brown trout (Salmo trutta) injected intramuscularly (p ≤ .05). The lesions represented moderate to severe tissue damage, but…

Towards noncontact skin melanoma selection by multispectral imaging analysis

2011

A clinical trial comprising 334 pigmented and vascular lesions has been performed in three Riga clinics by means of multispectral imaging analysis. The imaging system Nuance 2.4 (CRi) and self-developed software for mapping of the main skin chromophores were used. Spe- cific features were observed and analyzed for malignant skin melanomas: notably higher absorbance (especially as the difference of optical density relative to the healthy skin), uneven chromophore distribution over the lesion area, and the possibility to select the "melanoma areas" in the correla- tion graphs of chromophores. The obtained results indicate clinical potential of this technology for noncontact selec- tion of mel…

FCA-Net: Adversarial Learning for Skin Lesion Segmentation Based on Multi-Scale Features and Factorized Channel Attention

2019

International audience; Skin lesion segmentation in dermoscopic images is still a challenge due to the low contrast and fuzzy boundaries of lesions. Moreover, lesions have high similarity with the healthy regions in terms of appearance. In this paper, we propose an accurate skin lesion segmentation model based on a modified conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN). We introduce a new block in the encoder of cGAN called factorized channel attention (FCA), which exploits both channel attention mechanism and residual 1-D kernel factorized convolution. The channel attention mechanism increases the discriminability between the lesion and non-lesion features by taking feature channel int…

Tinea imbricata in Papua-Neuguinea: Behandlungsversuch mit Griseofulvin und Haloprogin bei einer Population des Gogol-Valley, Madang Province

2009

Behand-lungswoche an. Rezidive traten jedoch schon 1 Woche nach Therapieende auf. Es konnten Unterschiede in der Altersverteilung der Erkrankten in beiden Dorfern festgestellt wer…
