Colloidal zeolites and zeolite membranes

2002

The synthesis of zeolite membranes and thin films using the secondary growth process is briefly described. In this process colloidal zeolite particles (sols) are prepared hydrothermally and then subsequently deposited on substrates to produce uniform layers of controlled thickness. In order to optimise this process, an understanding of the nature of the sols and an insight into the structure of the consolidated layer so formed, is required. Such studies are illustrated here with silicalite and zeolite A. The formation and growth of silicalite sols has been investigated in situ by small angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS measurements on sols at progressively higher concentrations have pro…

Au/CeO2-SBA-15 catalysts for CO oxidation: Effect of ceria loading on physic-chemical properties and catalytic performances

2012

In this work gold catalysts supported over SBA-15 with different CeO 2 loadings (5-30 wt%) were prepared, characterized by N 2 physisorption analyses, SAXS, XRD, STEM and XPS techniques and their catalytic performances were evaluated in the CO oxidation, chosen as reaction test. Over a selected catalyst, Au/CeO 2(20 wt%)-SBA-15, the effect of CO 2 and of the mixture (CO 2 + H 2O) on the CO conversion to CO 2 was also evaluated. Characterizations by SAXS, XRD, STEM and XPS were carried out on selected spent catalysts after CO oxidation. The results were discussed in terms of relationship between morphological, structural, electronic and catalytic properties as a function of the ceria loading…

Structural model of gelation processes of a sodium silicate sol destabilized by calcium ions: combination of SAXS and rheological measurements

2005

This study deals with the physico-chemical processes involved in the formation of basic fractal silica gels derived from a sodium silicate sol destabilized by calcium ions. Using small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic rheological measurements, structural and viscoelastic properties have been investigated in situ during aggregation and gelation processes. The experimental results lead to a consistent model that describes the structural features and aggregation mechanisms involved in the formation of these gels.

Supramolecular Packing Drives Morphological Transitions of Charged Surfactant Micelles

2020

Abstract The shape and size of self‐assembled structures upon local organization of their molecular building blocks are hard to predict in the presence of long‐range interactions. Combining small‐angle X‐ray/neutron scattering data, theoretical modelling, and computer simulations, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), over a broad range of concentrations and ionic strengths, was investigated. Computer simulations indicate that micellar shape changes are associated with different binding of the counterions. By employing a toy model based on point charges on a surface, and comparing it to experiments and simulations, it is demonstrated that the observed morphological changes are caused by symmetry br…

Low temperature synthesis of monodisperse nanoscaled ZrO2with a large specific surface area

2012

Thermal decomposition of Zr(C(2)O(4))(2)·4H(2)O within an autoclave or in a conventional tube furnace at temperatures below 380 °C resulted in nano- and micron-sized ZrO(2), respectively. Reactions under autogenic pressure yielded monodisperse monoclinic (m) and tetragonal (t) ZrO(2) nanoparticles with an average diameter of ~8 nm and interconnected t-ZrO(2) nanoparticles with diameters of ~4 nm, depending on the synthesis temperature. Samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) associated with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Raman microspectroscopy and phot…

Structure of the Human TRPML2 Ion Channel Extracytosolic/Lumenal Domain.

2019

Summary TRPML2 is the least structurally characterized mammalian transient receptor potential mucolipin ion channel. The TRPML family hallmark is a large extracytosolic/lumenal domain (ELD) between transmembrane helices S1 and S2. We present crystal structures of the tetrameric human TRPML2 ELD at pH 6.5 (2.0 A) and 4.5 (2.95 A), corresponding to the pH values in recycling endosomes and lysosomes. Isothermal titration calorimetry shows Ca2+ binding to the highly acidic central pre-pore loop which is abrogated at low pH, in line with a pH-dependent channel regulation model. Small angle X-ray scattering confirms the ELD dimensions in solution. Changes in pH or Ca2+ concentration do not affect…

All hierarchical levels are involved in conformational transitions of the 4×6-meric tarantula hemocyanin upon oxygenation

2002

The respiratory protein of the tarantula Eurypelma californicum is a 4 x 6-meric hemocyanin that binds oxygen with high cooperativity. This requires the existence of different conformations which have been confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Here we present reconstructed 3D-models of the oxy- and deoxy-forms of tarantula hemocyanins, as obtained by fitting small angle X-rays scattering curves on the basis of known X-ray structures and electron microscopy of related hemocyanins. For the first time, the involvement of movements at all levels of the quaternary structure was confirmed for an arthropod hemocyanin upon oxygenation. The two identical 2 x 6-meric half-molecules of the…

Organometallic Oligomers Based on Bis(arylacetylide)bis(P-chirogenic phosphine)platinum(II) Complexes: Synthesis and Photonic Properties

2013

A series of P-chirogenic oligomers of the type (-C≡C-aryl-C≡C-PtL2-)n [L = (R)- and (S)-P(Ph)(iPr)(C17H35); aryl = 1,4-benzene, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole] along the corresponding achiral analogues (L = PBu3) and model complexes PhC≡CPtL2C≡CPh were prepared from the ephedrine strategy and were fully characterized [(1)H, (31)P NMR; IR; small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS); gel permeation chromatography (GPC); thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA); circular dichroism, UV-vis, and luminescence spectroscopy; photophysics, and degree of anisotropy measurements]. From the CD measurements, the chiral environment of the phosphine ligands is modestly felt by the aryl moieties. Concurrently, the TGA shows th…

Small-angle X-ray Scattering-based Three-dimensional Reconstruction of the Immunogen KLH1 Reveals Different Oxygen-dependent Conformations

2003

For decades the respiratory protein keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH1) from the marine gastropod Megathura crenulata has been used widely as a potent immunostimulant, useful hapten carrier, and valuable agent in the treatment of bladder carcinoma. Although much information on the immunological properties of KLH1 is available, biochemical and structural data are still incomplete. Small-angle x-ray scattering revealed the existence of two conformations, an oxy state being slightly more compact than the deoxy state. Based on small-angle scattering curves, a newly developed Monte Carlo algorithm delivered a surface representation of proteins. The massive changes of the surfaces of reconstructed d…
