Human Sociability in Antonio Montecatini's (1537–99) Commentary on Aristotle's Politics

2021

The present article delves into the history of political philosophy by discussing human sociability in Antonio Montecatini's (1537–99) commentary on Aristotle's Politics. The focus is on a philosophical analysis of three interrelated ideas that Montecatini discusses: (1) Aristotle's dictum that human beings are political animals by nature; (2) naturalness of the household; and (3) the nature and origin of political communities. Montecatini's views are briefly related to those of John Case (ca. 1546–1600), and they are also contextualized within the late medieval commentary tradition on the Politics, but the main aim is to clarify Montecatini's philosophical position and examine the ways in …

Cannabinoid type-1 receptor signaling in central serotonergic neurons regulates anxiety-like behavior and sociability.

2015

The endocannabinoid (eCB) system possesses neuromodulatory functions by influencing the release of various neurotransmitters, including γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate. A functional interaction between eCBs and the serotonergic system has already been suggested. Previously, we showed that cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor mRNA and protein are localized in serotonergic neurons of the raphe nuclei, implying that the eCB system can modulate serotonergic functions. In order to substantiate the physiological role of the CB1 receptor in serotonergic neurons of the raphe nuclei, we generated serotonergic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neuron-specific CB 1 receptor-deficient mice, using the Cr…

Smithian Sentimentalism Anticipated: Pufendorf on the Desire for Esteem and Moral Conduct

2018

In this paper, we argue that Samuel Pufendorf's works on natural law contain a sentimentalist theory of morality that is Smithian in its moral psychology. Pufendorf's account of how ordinary people make moral judgements and come to act sociably is surprisingly similar to Smith's. Both thinkers maintain that the human desire for esteem, manifested by resentment and gratitude, informs people of the content of central moral norms and can motivate them to act accordingly. Finally, we suggest that given Pufendorf's theory of socially imposed moral entities, he has all the resources for a sentimentalist theory of morality.

The Xícaras from Don Hilarion: the public spaces and private homes in the eighteenth century rural

2012

2019

The spread of digital platforms offering the most varied services has certainly become pervasive in last ten years. And we mean by pervasiveness the property that connotes some processes (economic, social, cultural, but also cognitive, or, in another area, biological or natural), as well as some practices, to impose itself as a mode of action or legitimate, functional vision, etc. ., in most of the environments that constitute the area in which they decline themselves. Among these, it is, above all, the so-called social platforms - therefore the social networks, in the first place - that have shown a remarkable effectiveness in terms of pervasiveness, so effective to have determined a modif…

Mundo obrero, cultura y asociacionismo: algunas reflexiones sobre modelos y pervivencias formales

2003

In this article, the author reflects on the associative models chosen by Spanish working and popular classes since the middle of nineteenth century in order to defend their interests, especially in the case of the difussion of culture and education. It is remarkable the continuity and success of some inherited prototypes, as it happened with the «ateneos» until the years of the Spanish civil war. At the same time, workers' organizations tried to satisfy an extensive range of demands by developing multifunctional centres. Examples of these were the «Casas del Pueblo» (People's Houses) erected by the socialist movement.

The path of liberation. Women’s associationism and workers’ cultures in the Second Republic (1931-1936)

2021

A View from the Garden: Contemplative Isolation and Constructive Sociability in Lucretius and in the Epicurean Tradition

2021

It is often assumed that Epicurean philosophy and its foremost Roman prophet, T. Lucretius Carus, adopted a deeply hostile attitude towards both politics and religion. Individualistic (or even solipsistic) interpretations of Epicureanism – as well as of the Epicurean catechism of De Rerum Natura – have long co-existed with, and provided support to, the claim that the Epicureans attached little value to religious experiences. In the present paper, I shall argue that, in this and many other respects, the modern reception of Epicureanism – with its brave aspirations after the liberation of science from social and religious restraints – has had undue influence on our understanding of De Rerum N…

Impaired hippocampal neuroligin-2 function by chronic stress or synthetic peptide treatment is linked to social deficits and increased aggression.

2014

Neuroligins (NLGNs) are cell adhesion molecules that are important for proper synaptic formation and functioning, and are critical regulators of the balance between neural excitation/inhibition (E/I). Mutations in NLGNs have been linked to psychiatric disorders in humans involving social dysfunction and are related to similar abnormalities in animal models. Chronic stress increases the likelihood for affective disorders and has been shown to induce changes in neural structure and function in different brain regions, with the hippocampus being highly vulnerable to stress. Previous studies have shown evidence of chronic stress-induced changes in the neural E/I balance in the hippocampus. Ther…

Premorbid Adjustment and IQ in Patients With First-Episode Psychosis: A Multisite Case-Control Study of Their Relationship With Cannabis Use

2020

Abstract Psychotic patients with a lifetime history of cannabis use generally show better cognitive functioning than other psychotic patients. Some authors suggest that cannabis-using patients may have been less cognitively impaired and less socially withdrawn in their premorbid life. Using a dataset comprising 948 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and 1313 population controls across 6 countries, we examined the extent to which IQ and both early academic (Academic Factor [AF]) and social adjustment (Social Factor [SF]) are related to the lifetime frequency of cannabis use in both patients and controls. We expected a higher IQ and a better premorbid social adjustment in psychotic p…
