The German Orthopedic Society from 1918 to 1932. Developments and trends

2001

The German Orthopedic Society was founded in 1901. The period between 1918 and 1932 was characterized by the aftermath of World War I. Up to the middle of the 2nd decade, orthopedic surgeons mainly treated soldiers and civilians affected by the war. Almost every congress dealt with amputations and artificial limbs. At the same time, orthopedic surgery became a specialty at the German universities, legitimizing it as a subject of its own. Besides the large number of victims of the First World War who had to be treated by orthopedic surgeons, there was a second group of patients, the so-called cripples. These handicapped people had not previously been treated in general. A new law established…

Des femmes en blanc : La « fabrication » des infirmières

2018

The purpose of this PhD thesis is to understand how French nurses are groomed. We will focus on their initial training. How does a common educational background manage to produce such different practitioners? Firstly, a socio-historical approach of the emergence of this professional group will enlighten its internal dynamics especially regarding the institutional education. The training is held by senior nurses, who define the specific tasks and duties of nurses. In a second step, starting from a qualitative and localized fieldwork, we will aim at understanding the recruitment and socialization of student nurses. Recruiting obviously begins with the nursing school entrance examination but co…

Belief in God, Confidence in the Church and Secularization in Scandinavia

2021

We used the three latest rounds of the religion module of International Social Survey Programme to study secularization in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, focusing on belief in God. We restricted our sample to the affiliated with the majority Protestant churches and the unaffiliated and analyzed the trends toward disaffiliation and disbelief in God. Then, we studied the association between confidence in churches, religious/secular upbringing, and demographic controls with belief in God using multinomial logistic regression models. Our treatment of belief in God as a nominal variable allowed the inclusion of both the element of doubt and different images of God in the analyses. The trends towar…

Regenerar la sociedad, construir el patriotismo o la ciudadanía: Educación y socialización política en la España del siglo XX

2008

The article provides an historical review of the different features that characterized the discurses of civic education during the twentieth century. The different ideas and initiatives examined here are representative of positions taken by the “regeneracionismo”, whether liberal or Catholic, by movements related to the working class, by those sustaining authoritarian positions, or by groups that were committed to the establishment and consolidation of democracy in Spanish society. The analysis situates the different objectives, meanings and modalities of the formative process, as well as the different civic values advocated for future citizens, which went from conformity, integration, disc…

Resumen basado en el de la publicación Título, resumen y palabras clave en español y en inglés Se analiza la crisis de la educación política impulsada por la dictadura franquista durante los años sesenta y setenta atendiendo a la importancia del cambio generacional. Motivating Individuals With Disabilities to Be Physically Active

2002

The benefits of exercise andlor physical activity among individuals with disabilities have been well documented. However, very few people with disabilities are active. In this paper, a series of contemporary theoretical models will be presented to facilitate the identification of strategies to increase individuals with disabilities' opportunities and motivation toward physical activitylexercise. These models can be empirically tested by researchers, and practitioners can be guided by the hypothesized relationships to determine optimal strategies for motivating physical activity participation. This blend of theory, research, and practice in adapted physical activity scholarship may result in…

Gender discrimination and intergenerational transmission of preferences

2004

This paper provides an explanation for the existence of gender discrimination in the labour market focusing on the intergenerational transmission of preferences related to the attitude of women towards jobs and family. Changes in women's preferences over generations depend on the socialization efforts of their parents which in turn are influenced by both the firm's expected recruitment policy and the expected utility from household care. We obtain two types of steady state equilibria: the discriminatory equilibrium, in which women are segregated to low-paid jobs, and the non-discriminatory equilibrium, in which women are hired in highly-paid jobs. The conditions of convergence to each equil…
