On the analysis of a new Markov chain which has applications in AI and machine learning

2011

Accepted version of an article from the conference: 2011 24th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering. Published version available from IEEE: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CCECE.2011.6030727 In this paper, we consider the analysis of a fascinating Random Walk (RW) that contains interleaving random steps and random "jumps". The characterizing aspect of such a chain is that every step is paired with its counterpart random jump. RWs of this sort have applications in testing of entities, where the entity is never allowed to make more than a pre-specified number of consecutive failures. This paper contains the analysis of the chain, some fascinating limiting properties, and some i…

ean-Square Filtering for Polynomial System States Confused with Poisson Noises over Polynomial Observations

2011

Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2011.2.1 In this paper, the mean-square filtering problem for polynomial system states confused with white Poisson noises over polynomial observations is studied proceeding from the general expression for the stochastic Ito differentials of the mean-square estimate and the error variance. In contrast to the previously obtained results, the paper deals with the general case of nonlinear polynomial states and observations with white Poisson noises. As a result, the Ito differentials for the mean-square estimate and error variance corre- spon…

Tracking the Preferences of Users Using Weak Estimators

2011

Published version of am article from the book:AI 2011: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-25832-9_81 Since a social network, by definition, is so diverse, the problem of estimating the preferences of its users is becoming increasingly essential for personalized applications which range from service recommender systems to the targeted advertising of services. However, unlike traditional estimation problems where the underlying target distribution is stationary, estimating a user’s interests, typically, involves non-stationary distributions. The consequent time varying nature of the distribution to be trac…

Multi-class pairwise linear dimensionality reduction using heteroscedastic schemes

2010

Accepted version of an article published in the journal: Pattern Recognition. Published version on Sciverse: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.patcog.2010.01.018 Linear dimensionality reduction (LDR) techniques have been increasingly important in pattern recognition (PR) due to the fact that they permit a relatively simple mapping of the problem onto a lower-dimensional subspace, leading to simple and computationally efficient classification strategies. Although the field has been well developed for the two-class problem, the corresponding issues encountered when dealing with multiple classes are far from trivial. In this paper, we argue that, as opposed to the traditional LDR multi-class schemes…

Semi-decentralized strategies in structural vibration control

2011

Published version of an article published in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2011.2.2 In this work, the main ideas involved in the design of overlapping and multi-overlapping controllers via the Inclusion Principle are discussed and illustrated in the context of the Structural Vibration Control of tall buildings under seismic excitation. A detailed theoretical background on the Inclusion Principle and the design of overlapping controllers is provided. Overlapping and multi-overlapping LQR controllers are designed for a simplied five-story building model. Numerical simulations are conducted to asses the pe…

Information diffusion model with homogeneous continuous time Markov chain on Indonesian Twitter users

2022

In this paper, a homogeneous continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) is used to model information diffusion or dissemination, also to determine influencers on Twitter dynamically. The tweeting process can be modeled with a homogeneous CTMC since the properties of Markov chains are fulfilled. In this case, the tweets that are received by followers only depend on the tweets from the previous followers. Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD) in Data Mining is used to be research methodology including pre-processing, data mining process using homogeneous CTMC, and post-processing to get the influencers using visualization that predicts the number of affected users. We assume the number of affected u…

Chasing Metaverses: Reflecting on Existing Literature to Understand the Business Value of Metaverses

2022

AbstractMetaverses refer to immersive virtual worlds in which people, places, and things of the physical world are represented by their digital representations. The wide adoption of metaverses is expected to widely disrupt the way we interact in the virtual world by elevating our online interactive experiences and bringing a plethora of implications for businesses. Following a structured literature review of related research published in the last decade, we shed light on our current understanding of metaverses and reflect on the potentially transformative value of metaverses for businesses in the near future. We draw on an established research framework to organize the insights of existing …

Cyber-Physical Systems for Smart Water Networks: A Review

2021

Author's accepted manuscript. There is a growing demand to equip Smart Water Networks (SWN) with advanced sensing and computation capabilities in order to detect anomalies and apply autonomous event-triggered control. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) have emerged as an important research area capable of intelligently sensing the state of SWN and reacting autonomously in scenarios of unexpected crisis development. Through computational algorithms, CPSs can integrate physical components of SWN, such as sensors and actuators, and provide technological frameworks for data analytics, pertinent decision making, and control. The development of CPSs in SWN requires the collaboration of diverse scienti…
