The interpreter’s footing in Spanish-Italian medical interviews
2014
Atlas: analysis tools for low-depth and ancient samples
2017
AbstractSummaryPost-mortem damage (PMD) obstructs the proper analysis of ancient DNA samples and can currently only be addressed by removing or down-weighting potentially damaged data. Here we present ATLAS, a suite of methods to accurately genotype and estimate genetic diversity from ancient samples, while accounting for PMD. It works directly from raw BAM files and enables the building of complete and customized pipelines for the analysis of ancient and other low-depth samples in a very user-friendly way. Based on simulations we show that, in the presence of PMD, a dedicated pipeline of ATLAS calls genotypes more accurately than the state-of-the-art pipeline of GATK combined with mapDamag…
Comparison of the Root Canal Curvatures of Human Teeth with the Curvatures of the Resin Blocks Used as Models for Training
2019
In this paper we develop a method to associate a function curvature to human teeth roots. These functions are calculated from radiographs using mathematical software. We use this procedure to compare the curvatures of the roots with the curvatures of the resin blocks that are used for learning. The comparison is made by calculating the distances of the corresponding functions in the \(L_1\) metric.

Hybrid segmentation and virtual bronchoscopy based on CT images1
2004
Rationale and objectives Introduction of combination of the segmentation tool SegoMeTex and the virtual endoscopy system VIVENDI to perform virtual endoscopic inspections of the human lung. This virtual bronchoscopy system enables visualization of the tracheobronchial tree down to seventh generation. Furthermore, the modified virtual system visualizes hidden structures such as segmented vascular system or tumors. Materials and methods The segmentation is based on image data acquired by a multislice computed tomography scanner. SegoMeTex is used to segment the tracheobronchial tree by a hybrid system with minimal user action. Similarly, the complementary pulmonary arterial can be segmented, …
GPCALMA: An Italian mammographic database of digitized images for research
2006
In this work the implementation of a database of digitized mammograms is described. The digitized images were collected since 1999 by a community of physicists in collaboration with radiologists in several Italian hospitals, as a first step in order to develop and implement a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system. 3369 mammograms were collected from 967 patients; they were classified according to the type and the morphology of the lesions, the type of the breast tissue and the type of pathologies. A dedicated Graphical User Interface was developed for mammography visualization and processing, in order to support the medical diagnosis directly on a high-resolution screen. The database has be…
Obstructive sleep apnea is an independent predictor for dyslipidemia: Data from the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA)
2017
Background and aim: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and dyslipidemia are both independently well-recognized risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Previous data are inconclusive regarding the relationship between OSA and dyslipidemia. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between OSA and dyslipidemia in ESADA (European Sleep Apnea Database). Methods: The cross-sectional analysis included 8592 patients (age 50.1±12.7 years, 69.1% male, BMI 30.8±6.6 kg/m2, mean AHI 25.7±25.9 n/h) from the ESADA. The independent relationship between measures of OSA (AHI, ODI, mean and lowest saturation) and lipid profile (total cholesterol [TC], HDL-cholesterol [HDL-C] (n=3289) and fa…
A Knowledge-Based System for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
2003
Therapies to slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease are most effective when applied in its initial stages. Therefore it is important to develop methods to diagnose the disease as early as possible. It is also desirable to establish standards which can be used generally by physicians who may not be experts in diagnosis of the disease. One possible method to obtain an early diagnosis is the evaluation of the glucose metabolism of the brain. In this paper we present a prototype of an expert system that automatically diagnoses Alzheimer’s disease on the basis of positron emission tomography images displaying the metabolic activity in the brain.
A boosting approach for prostate cancer detection using multi-parametric MRI
2015
International audience; Prostate cancer has been reported as the second most frequently diagnosed men cancers in the world. In the last decades, new imaging techniques based on MRI have been developed in order to improve the diagnosis task of radiologists. In practise, diagnosis can be affected by multiple factors reducing the chance to detect potential lesions. Computer-aided detection and computer-aided diagnosis have been designed to answer to these needs and provide help to radiologists in their daily duties. In this study, we proposed an automatic method to detect prostate cancer from a per voxel manner using 3T multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and a gradient boosting …
On the Use of XML in Medical Imaging Web-Based Applications
2016
The rapid growth of digital technology in medical fields over recent years has increased the need for applications able to manage patient medical records, imaging data, and chart information. Web-based applications are implemented with the purpose to link digital databases, storage and transmission protocols, management of large volumes of data and security concepts, allowing the possibility to read, analyze, and even diagnose remotely from the medical center where the information was acquired. The objective of this paper is to analyze the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) language in web-based applications that aid in diagnosis or treatment of patients, considering how this proto…
