Tracing anthropogenic thallium in soil using stable isotope compositions.

Thallium stable isotope data are used in this study, for the first time, to apportion Tl contamination in soils. In the late 1970s, a cement plant near Lengerich, Germany, emitted cement kiln dust (CKD) with high Tl contents, due to cocombustion of Tl-enriched pyrite roasting waste. Locally contaminated soil profiles were obtained down to 1 m depth and the samples are in accord with a binary mixing relationship in a diagram of Tl isotope compositions (expressed as e(205)Tl, the deviation of the (205)Tl/(203)Tl ratio of a sample from the NIST SRM 997 Tl isotope standard in parts per 10(4)) versus 1/[Tl]. Polychlorinated phenols and their metabolites in soil and earthworms of sawmill environment

Abstract Topsoil and earthworm samples collected from three Finnish sawmill environments were analysed for polychlorinated phenols, 2,3,4,6-tetrachloro- and pentachlorophenol, and their metabolites. Analyses were carried out by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using a selected ion monitoring technique and by dual-channel gas chromatography using quartz capillary columns and two electron capture detectors. The total chlorophenol concentrations ranged from ca. 260 to 480 μg/g (dry weight) in soil and from ca. 140 to 3500 μg/g fat in earthworms. FluorMODleaf: A new leaf fluorescence emission model based on the PROSPECT model

International audience; A new model of chlorophyll a fluorescence emission by plant leaves, FluorMODleaf, is presented. It is an extension of PROSPECT, a widely used leaf optical properties model that regards the leaf as a pile of N absorbing and diffusing elementary plates. In FluorMODleaf, fluorescence emission of an infinitesimal layer of thickness dx is integrated over the entire elementary plate. The fluorescence source function is based on the excitation spectrum of diluted isolated thylakoids and on the emission spectra of isolated photosystems, PSI and PSII, which are the main pigment–protein complexes involved in the initial stages of photosynthesis. A battery of toxicity tests as indicators of decontamination in composting oily waste.

Heterogeneous oily waste from an old dumping site was composted in three windrows constructed from different proportions of waste, sewage sludge, and bark. The objectives of this pilot study were to examine the usefulness of composting as a treatment method for this particular waste and to study decontamination in the composting process by using a battery of toxicity tests. Influence of ground tire rubber on the transient loading response of a peat biofilter

Abstract The effect of using ground tire rubber (GTR) as an adsorptive material in the removal of a 2:1:1 weight mixture of n-butyl acetate, toluene and m-xylene by using a peat biofilter under different intermittent conditions was investigated. The performance of two identical size biofilters, one packed with fibrous peat alone and the other with a 3:1 (vol) fibrous peat and GTR mixture, was examined for a period of four months. Partition coefficients of both materials were measured. On-line Chloride Interference Removal for Arsenic Determination in Waste Water and Urine by ICP-MS Using a Modified Capillary

The determination of arsenic in environmental samples like waste waters from industrial effluents and in biological samples like urine is very important due to the toxic nature of some of its species at moderate levels of exposure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of modified anionic capillaries to remove chloride for ICP-MS determination of arsenic, which causes spectral interference due to formation of 40 Ar 35 Cl + . Also high chloride content gives non-spectral interferences. Determination of Phenols from Automobile Exhaust by Means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Abstract The paper describes a procedure to determine ten representative phenols (phenol, m-, p-, o-cresol, 2,4-, 2,6-, 3,4-, 3,5-xylenol, 2,3,6-, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol) in engine exhaust. Sampling was performed by a conventional Grimmer device. A sample of the water condensate collected was extracted with ether. After concentration of the ether extract phenols were isolated from other interfering compounds by stepwise elution on a Lobar column packed with LiChroprep Si 60 under controlled conditions. Use of sonication for measuring acid phosphatase activity in soil

Extracellular enzymes in soil often occur in immobilised forms, a state that may alter their interactions with substrates in comparison with enzymes in the solution phase. Sonication was evaluated for its usefulness in studying immobilised acid phosphatase by dispersing soil aggregates. Factors affecting soil dispersion during ultrasound application were soil extraction ratio, total applied energy and power output ml−1 of sonicated soil slurry.
