Transmission is a crucial part of a viral life cycle and transmission mode can have an important impact on virus biology. It was demonstrated that transmission mode can influence the virulence and evolution of a virus; however, few empirical data are available to describe the direct underlying changes in virus population structure dynamics within the host. Repeated exposure of fluazinam fungicides affects gene expression profiles yet carries no costs on a nontarget pest

Fungicides are used to control pathogenic fungi of crop species, but they have also been shown to alter behavioral, life history and fitness related traits of non-target insects. Here, we tested the fungicide effects on feeding behavior, survival and physiology of the non-target pest insect, the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). Feeding behavior was studied by a choice test of adult beetles, which were allowed to choose between a control and a fungicide (fluazinam) treated potato leaf. Fried potato consumption is associated with elevated mortality: an 8-y longitudinal cohort study

Background: Few studies have assessed the association between potato consumption and mortality. Objective: We investigated whether potato consumption (including fried and unfried potatoes) is associated with increased premature mortality risk in a North American cohort. Design: A longitudinal analysis included 4440 participants aged 45-79 y at baseline with an 8-y follow-up from the Osteoarthritis Initiative cohort study. Objective: The consumption of potatoes is increasing worldwide, but few studies have assessed the association between potato consumption and mortality, particularly in Mediterranean countries. Effect of regurgitant from Leptinotarsa decemlineata on wound responses in Solanum tuberosum and Phaseolus vulgaris.

The effect of regurgitant from Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say larvae on wound-induced responses was studied using two plant species, Solanum tuberosum L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L. Wounding of one leaf of intact S. tuberosum plants differentially affected ethylene production and activities of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. Only polyphenol oxidase activity was stimulated by wounding in both wounded and systemic leaves. Peroxidase activity was not affected by wounding. Wounding caused only a transient increase of ethylene production from wounded leaves. Substituted phosphonic analogues of phenylglycine as inhibitors of phenylalanine ammonia lyase from potatoes.

A series of phosphonic acid analogues of phenylglycine variously substituted in phenyl ring have been synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory activity towards potato l-phenylalanine ammonia lyase. Most of the compounds appeared to act as moderate (micromolar) inhibitors of the enzyme. Analysis of their binding performed using molecular modeling have shown that they might be bound either in active site of the enzyme or in the non-physiologic site. The latter one is located in adjoining deep site nearby the to the entrance channel for substrate into active site.

Long-term ozone exposure of potato: Free radical content and leaf injury analysed by Q-band ESR spectroscopy and image analysis

This paper presents Q-band electron spin resonance (ESR) studies on free radicals (FR) generated in potato leaves exposed to different O(3) levels in open-top chambers (OTC), together with a quantitative study of the relationship between FR signal intensity and area of potato leaf damage. L-Tyrosine beta-naphthylamide, a synthetic substrate designed to measure tyrosine aminopeptidase activity, is a potent inhibitor of hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA:tyramine N-(hydroxycinnamoyl)transferase (THT) purified from elicited tobacco cell-suspension cultures. The inhibition is competitive, with the inhibitor binding reversibly to the tyramine binding site of the enzyme. Similar results were obtained with THT extracted from elicited potato cell-suspension cultures.
