CPF : Continuous polymer fractionation

1992

A method is presented by means of which it is possible to fractionate polymers according to their solubility on a technical scale. The CPF consists of a continuous counter-current extraction process in which a homogeneous mixture of a molecularly or/and chemically non-uniform high molecular weight product is divided into two portions of considerably lower non-uniformity. The principle of the CPF is described in general terms and examples are given for the fractionation of homopolymers.

Temperature- and Light-Responsive Polyacrylamides Prepared by a Double Polymer Analogous Reaction of Activated Ester Polymers

2009

Two different series of polyacrylamides containing different amounts of salicylideneaniline moieties have been synthesized via a double polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) (PPFPA). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution, which was dependent on (i) the amount of incorporated chromophoric salicylideneaniline groups and (ii) the isomerization state of the respective salicylideneaniline group. Higher LCST values were measured for UV-irradiated solutions of the copolymers in comparison to the nonirradiated copolymer solutions. A maximum difference in the LCST of up to 13 °C was found for poly(N-cycloprop…

1978

The phenomenon of co-nonsolvency, i.e. the formation of nonsolvents by mixing two solvents, was studied for the system N,N-dimethylformamide/cyclohexane/polystyrene (DMF/CH/PS) which is characterized by the fact that the components of the mixed solvent are only incompletely miscible below 48,6°C. A number of quasibinary sections (stepwise addition of the second solvent to given solutions of the polymer in the first solvent) for a sample (M = 110000) of high molecular uniformity yielded a cloud point surface which gives “island curves” (closed solubility gaps) for constant temperatures between the critical temperature of DMF/CH and the top of the cloud point surface (51,3°C). The attainment …

Lattice fluid model generalized for specific interactions: An application to ternary polymer solutions

2011

Abstract The phase diagram of the Poly- l -Lactic-Acid (PLLA), dioxane and water system was derived by using the lattice fluid model generalized for specific interactions. A qualitative analysis of Hansen solubility parameters together with empirical observations were adopted to reduce the number of adjustable parameters. The as-selected model parameters were derived by fitting a set of cloud point curves; consequently, the complete phase diagram of the system was computed. The use of specific interactions between species gave out a quantitative agreement with a set of experimental data, whereas changing the polymer polydispersity the agreement is only qualitative. In principle, the present…

Role of hexagonal structure-forming lipids in diadinoxanthin and violaxanthin solubilization and de-epoxidation

2005

In this study, we have examined the influence of different lipids on the solubility of the xanthophyll cycle pigments diadinoxanthin (Ddx) and violaxanthin (Vx) and on the efficiency of Ddx and Vx de-epoxidation by the enzymes Vx de-epoxidase (VDE) from wheat and Ddx de-epoxidase (DDE) from the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana, respectively. Our results show that the lipids MGDG and PE are able to solubilize both xanthophyll cycle pigments in an aqueous medium. Substrate solubilization is essential for de-epoxidase activity, because in the absence of MGDG or PE Ddx and Vx are present in an aggregated form, with limited accessibility for DDE and VDE. Our results also show that the hexagonal st…

A Novel Gas Chromatographic Method to Measure Sorption of Dense Gases into Polymers

2006

A novel experimental approach to determine the solubility of gaseous compounds inside polymers is here described. The method is based on the gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase at equilibrium with the polymer. To take into account the effect of the volume swelling on the measurement a suitable probe, nonabsorbable by the polymer, was added to the fluid phase. Under the adopted configuration the apparatus can operate up to 35 MPa and 80°C. This experimental technique has been used to determine the solubility of carbon dioxide in poly(vinylidene fluoride) using argon as a probe. The latter was chosen because it is negligibly absorbed by the polymer and does…

Cyclodextrin-assisted Glycan Chain Extension on a Protected Glycosyl Amino Acid

2000

By the use of cyclodextrins, we have enhanced the solubility of the protected amino acid glycan Fmoc-Thr(GalNAcα1)-OtBu (1b) up to 100-fold. This improvement enabled us to carry out an enzymatic glycosylation employing a β-galactosidase in combination with an α2,3-sialyltransferase without the aid of organic cosolvents. After optimization of the one-pot reaction, the sialylated core 1 structure Fmoc-Thr[Neu5Ac(α2-3)Gal(β1-3)GalNAcα1]-OtBu (3b) could be obtained with 50% yield.

Radiation synthesis of polyaspartamide functionalised hydrogels for sustained release of fragrances

2005

The aim of the present investigation is to assess the possibility of obtaining a biocompatible material device which is able to deliver oil-soluble fragrances in air over a length of time. Aqueous solutions of polyaspartamide functionalised with glycidyl methacrylate have been cross linked through gamma irradiation in the presence of a lipophilic model fragrance, emulsified prior to irradiation. Two emulsification conditions have been considered at two different concentrations of both fragrance and surfactant in water. Chemical hydrogels have been obtained in correspondence to two irradiation absorbed doses and have been characterised for their solubility properties and swelling ability in …

Sorption of high pressure fluid mixtures into semi-crystalline polymers: investigation of the system carbon dioxide/vinylidenefluoride/poly(vinyliden…

2008

A novel experimental apparatus for measuring gas absorption has been adopted to study sorption of carbon dioxide CO2 and vinylidenefluoride (VDF) in a semi crystalline polymer, namely poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF). The experimental technique allows to calculate simultaneous absorption of different components in the polymer phase, through a gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase. To take into account indirectly the polymer swelling, a suitable not-absorbable probe, namely argon, has been added to the fluid phase. Concentrations of molecules absorbed in the polymer phase were simply calculated through mass balance equations written for each component in the …
