Quantification of electrochromic kinetics by analysis of RGB digital video images

2018

A new, rapid, and practical procedure to obtain quantitative kinetic information of electrochromic materials is proposed. When the transition between two colors on a colored electrode surface is monitorized by digital video, the analysis of pixel color intensity (I) in sequential RGB digital images allows us to precise the half-life time (t1/2) of the color change since a maximum value of the standard deviation of the pixel intensity (σ(I)) is reached. We simulated and analyzed the evolution of standard deviation during an electrochromic transition in different circumstances (kinetic and diffusion control). As an example of application, electrochromic transitions of a thin film model, the P…

Deformed quons and bi-coherent states

2017

We discuss how a q-mutation relation can be deformed replacing a pair of conjugate operators with two other and unrelated operators, as it is done in the construction of pseudo-fermions, pseudo-bosons and truncated pseudo-bosons. This deformation involves interesting mathematical problems and suggests possible applications to pseudo-hermitian quantum mechanics. We construct bi-coherent states associated to $\D$-pseudo-quons, and we show that they share many of their properties with ordinary coherent states. In particular, we find conditions for these states to exist, to be eigenstates of suitable annihilation operators and to give rise to a resolution of the identity. Two examples are discu…

Nanometric ion pair complexes of tobramycin forming microparticles for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis

2019

Abstract Sustained pulmonary delivery of tobramycin from microparticles composed of drug/polymer nanocomplexes offers several advantages against traditional delivery methods. Namely, in patients with cystic fibrosis, microparticle delivery can protect the tobramycin being delivered from strong mucoadhesive interactions, thus avoiding effects on its diffusion toward the infection site. Polymeric ion-pair complexes were obtained starting from two synthetic polyanions, through impregnation of their solid dissociated forms with tobramycin in aqueous solution. The structure of these polymeric systems was characterized, and their activities were examined against various biofilm-forming Pseudomona…

Theoretical study of the stabilization of cubic-phaseZrO2by impurities

1994

We have performed a thermodynamical analysis of the phase diagrams for ${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$-CaO and ${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$-MgO solid solutions which has demonstrated that differential heats of mixing are important parameters determining the stabilization of the cubic phase of ${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$ by impurities. It is shown that the differential heats of mixing in the cubic phase of these systems should be lower than in the tetragonal phase. To understand this effect we have studied the electronic and geometrical structures of the pure and doped ${\mathrm{ZrO}}_{2}$ crystals. Three computational techniques were employed: the ab initio Hartree-Fock pseudopotential method is used to study the at…

The effect of perspective taking on the mediation process

2018

Stefano Boca, Maria Garro, Isabella Giammusso, Costanza Scaffidi Abbate Department of Psychology, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Previous research demonstrated several benefits of strategic perspective taking in the field of intergroup relations and, more specifically, in the negotiation processes aimed at conflict resolution. The present study, which analyzes the effect of perspective taking and mediation in a conflict setting, corroborates the psychological models that hypothesize the positive effects of the assumption of the competitor’s perspective on having intergroup conflict and lessening of negative consequences. Materials and methods: After being involv…

Retrograde in situ versus antegrade pulmonary preservation in clinical lung transplantation: a single-centre experience.

2014

OBJECTIVE Experimental and clinical studies have indicated a beneficial effect of retrograde lung preservation on post-transplant results. Accordingly, we conducted a non-randomized trial. METHODS A total of 209 consecutive recipients transplanted with low-potassium dextrane (LPD)-preserved lungs were eligible for analysis. Antegrade lung preservation (AP) was performed in 173 patients and retrograde in situ perfusion (RP) in 36 patients using low-potassium dextrane solution in all cases. The prostacycline was added to preservation solution. RESULTS The main donor, graft and recipient characteristics did not differ significantly between groups. There was a beneficial trend toward improved o…

Physicochemical compatibility of mixtures of dornase alfa and tobramycin containing nebulizer solutions

2008

Patients suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF) often need to inhale multiple doses of different nebulizable drugs per day. Patients attempt to shorten the time consuming administration procedure by mixing drug solutions/suspensions for simultaneous inhalation. The objective of this experimental study was to determine whether mixtures of the nebulizer solution dornase alfa (Pulmozyme) with tobramycin nebulizer solutions (TOBI and GERNEBCIN 80 mg) are physico-chemically compatible. Drug combinations were prepared by mixing the content of one respule Pulmozyme with either one respule TOBI or one ampoule GERNEBCIN 80 mg. Test solutions were stored at room temperature and exposed to light. Dornase…

Towards the determination of isoprene in human breath using substrate-integrated hollow waveguide mid-infrared sensors

2014

Selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath may be considered biomarkers if they are indicative of distinct diseases or disease states. Given the inherent molecular selectivity of vibrational spectroscopy, infrared sensing technologies appear ideally suitable for the determination of endogenous VOCs in breath. The aim of this study was to determine that mid-infrared (MIR; 3-20 µm) gas phase sensing is capable of determining isoprene in exhaled breath as an exemplary medically relevant VOC by hyphenating novel substrate-integrated hollow waveguides (iHWG) with a likewise miniaturized preconcentration system. A compact preconcentrator column for sampling isoprene from exhaled breath …

A New Technical Approach For Retrograde Administration of Cardioplegic Solutions

1989

Myocardial protection via the coronary sinus is now currently used by several groups. Although it has generally provided satisfactory results, some of its problems are still not completely resolved. We present a new technique of cardioplegia delivery through the coronary sinus with a Pezzer catheter inserted into it and secured in place by a purse string suture. We believe that this method is safer and more reliable than others.

Persistent tachypnea of infancy: Follow up at school age

2020

Background Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) is a rare pediatric lung disease of unknown origin. The diagnosis can be made by clinical presentation and chest high resolution computed tomography after exclusion of other causes. Clinical courses beyond infancy have rarely been assessed. Methods Patients included in the Kids Lung Register diagnosed with PTI as infants and now older than 5 years were identified. Initial presentation, extrapulmonary comorbidities, spirometry and clinical outcome were analyzed. Results Thirty-five children older than 5 years with PTI diagnosed as infants were analyzed. At the age of 5 years, 74% of the patients were reported as asymptomatic and did not develo…
