The LOFT mission concept: a status update
2016
The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolut…
IBIS: The Imager on-board INTEGRAL
2003
The IBIS telescope is the high angular resolution gamma-ray imager on-board the INTEGRAL Observatory, successfully launched from Baikonur (Kazakhstan) the 17th of October 2002. This medium size ESA project, planned for a 2 year mission with possible extension to 5, is devoted to the observation of the gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 3 keV to 10 MeV (Winkler 2001). The IBIS imaging system is based on two independent solid state detector arrays optimised for low ( 15-1000 keV) and high ( 0.175-10.0 MeV) energies surrounded by an active VETO System. This high efficiency shield is essential to minimise the background induced by high energy particles in the highly excentric out of van All…
Comparative Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Fe L-2,L-3-Edges X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in Three Highly Popular, Low-Spin Organoiron Com…
2019
The occupied and unoccupied electronic structures of three highly popular, closed shell organoiron complexes ([Fe(CO)(5)], [(eta(5)-C5H5 )Fe(CO)(mu-CO)](2), and [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Fe]) have been theoretically investigated by taking advantage of density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled to the isolobal analogy (Elian et al. Inorg. Chem. 1976, 15, 1148). The adopted approach allowed us to look into the relative role played by the ligand -> Fe donation and the Fe -> ligand back-donation in title molecules, as well as to investigate how CO- (terminal or bridging) and [(eta(5)-C5H5)](-)-based pi* orbitals compete when these two ligands are simultaneously present as in [(eta(5)-C5H…
The reflection component in NS LMXBs
2014
Thanks to the good spectral resolution and large effective area of the EPIC/PN instrument on board of XMM-Newton, we have at hand a large number of observations of accreting low-mass X-ray binaries, that allow for the fist time a comprehensive view on the characteristics of the reflection component at different accretion regimes and to probe the effects of a magnetosphere on its formation. We focus here on a comparative analysis of the reflection component from a series of spectroscopic studies on selected sources: 4U 1705-44, observed both in the soft and hard state, the pulsating ms pulsars SAX J1808.4-3658 and IGR J17511-3057, and the intermittent pulsar HETE J1900-2455. Although the sou…
Synthesis, stability and spectral behavior of fluorogenic sulfone-pyronin and sulfone-rosamine dyes
2018
International audience; The first synthesis of sulfone-pyronin and sulfone-rosamine dyes bearing optically tunable primary amino groups (acting as fluorogenic centers) is presented. Sulfone analogs of xanthene-based fluorophores have recently been highlighted as a new class of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dyes (Liu et al. ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2016; 8(35):22953-62), and the availability of fluorogenic derivatives is essential for the rapid construction of “turn-on” reactive probes for chemoselective bioimaging. However, these fluorescent anilines have been found to be unstable in aqueous physiological conditions due to the marked electrophilicity of their meso-position and hence its …
Three-dimensional splitting dynamics of giant vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates
2018
We study the splitting dynamics of giant vortices in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates by numerically integrating the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation in time. By taking advantage of tetrahedral tiling in the spatial discretization, we decrease the error and increase the reliability of the numerical method. An extensive survey of vortex splitting symmetries is presented for different aspect ratios of the harmonic trapping potential. The symmetries of the splitting patterns observed in the simulated dynamics are found to be in good agreement with predictions obtained by solving the dominant dynamical instabilities from the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. Furthermore, we observe…
On finite involutive Yang–Baxter groups
2021
[EN] A group G is said to be an involutive Yang¿Baxter group, or simply an IYB-group, if it is isomorphic to the permutation group of an involutive, nondegenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation. We give new sufficient conditions for a group that can be factorised as a product of two IYB-groups to be an IYB-group. Some earlier results are direct consequences of our main theorem.
Biosorption of nickel (II) and zinc (II) from aqueous solutions by the biomass of yeast Yarrowia lipolytica
2017
Abstract This study examined the biosorption process of Ni(II) and Zn(II) from an aqueous solution by dead biomass of Yarrowia lipolytica. Optimum biosorption conditions were determined as a function of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, and temperature. The biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, which indicated the participation of hydroxyl, carboxyl, amide and amine groups in the process of binding the metal ions. The results showed that the biosorption processes of both metal ions closely followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium data of Ni(II) and Zn(II) ions at 20, 30 and 40°C fitted the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the …
Improvement of photo-stability of LLDPE-based nanocomposites
2006
LLDPE-based nanocomposites undergo faster photo-oxidation than the unfilled matrix and the extent of their physical properties deterioration, namely elongation at break and tensile strength, is dependent on the organo-nanoclay loading. The observed acceleration is not due to faster photo-oxidation but rather due to a reduction of the oxidation induction time. The presence in the organoclays of trace amounts of metal ions may be promoting catalytic photodegradation. While UV absorbers provide useful protection, use of a metal deactivator has been found to greatly enhance the photo-stability of the LLDPE-based nanocomposites. Combinations of a metal deactivator and UV absorber yield synergist…
Irregular Time Dependent Obstacles
2010
Abstract We study the obstacle problem for the Evolutionary p-Laplace Equation when the obstacle is discontinuous and does not have regularity in the time variable. Two quite different procedures yield the same solution.
