Pharmaceuticals in processing of municipal sewage sludge studied by grab and passive sampling
2018
Abstract Concentrations of pharmaceuticals, consisting of four anti-inflammatory and one antiepileptic drug, were studied in the aqueous and solid phase of municipal sewage sludge, collected from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in central Finland. The samples included untreated municipal sludge from the biological wastewater treatment, digested sludge and sludge before and after composting. First, samples were taken as grab samples to study the bioavailable part in aqueous phase but also the part in solid fraction. Later, the long-term concentrations were studied by passive sampling with styrene divinylbenzene-reverse phase sulfonated (SDB-RPS) disks. In the untreated solid sludge, the …

Descriptive problems and numerical thinking: The case of one hundred poultryUnder the methodological framework of the didactic analysis and historical-epistemological analysis a study of the classical descriptive problems that emanate from the “hundred poultry” is presented. A…
ARBITRATION AND ADR, COMPONENTS OF THE NEW PARADIGM OF THE JUSTICE IN THE MODERNITY
2018
Arbitration is a piece of the new conception of Justice. The legislators have changed the rules of arbitration and there is a sort of uniform Act of global arbitration. CNUDMI Act is the protagonist of this metamorphosis. With some contractual and jurisdictional elements arbitration is arbitration and this is its real legal nature. Two fundamental elements constitute its essence. The freedom and autonomy of the parties, on the one side, and the exercise of the function of the arbitrators and its effects, on the other. There is not arbitration without them.
Creating Learning Environments Free of Violence in Special Education through the Dialogic Model of Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts
2021
Violence suffered by children is a violation of human rights and a global health problem. Children with disabilities are especially vulnerable to violence in the school environment, which has a negative impact on their well-being and health. Students with disabilities educated in special schools have, in addition, more reduced experiences of interaction that may reduce both their opportunities for learning and for building protective social networks of support. This study analyses the transference of evidence-based actions to prevent violence in schools –the Dialogic Model of Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts (DMPRC)– in the context of a special school, and its impact on the reduction …
An automatic method for metabolic evaluation of gamma knife treatments
2015
Lesion volume delineation of Positron Emission Tomography images is challenging because of the low spatial resolution and high noise level. Aim of this work is the development of an operator independent segmentation method of metabolic images. For this purpose, an algorithm for the biological tumor volume delineation based on random walks on graphs has been used. Twenty-four cerebral tumors are segmented to evaluate the functional follow-up after Gamma Knife radiotherapy treatment. Experimental results show that the segmentation algorithm is accurate and has real-time performance. In addition, it can reflect metabolic changes useful to evaluate radiotherapy response in treated patients.
Entering the Nano-Cosmos of the Cell by Means of Spatial Position Determination Microscopy (SPDM): Implications for Medical Diagnostics and Radiation…
2013
During the last 20 years fluorescence light microscopy has made an enormous progress towards fluorescence nanoscopy in order to elucidate the nanostructural organization of cellular machineries beyond classical limits of resolution in light microscopy. One of these novel techniques is Spatial Position Determination Microscopy (SPDM), an approach of molecular localization microscopy based on the application of specific fluorescence labelling of cellular structures by means of dyes that undergo reversible photobleaching resulting in blinking effects during image acquisition. This blinking allows spectral separation of individual molecules and thus precise localization and distances measuremen…
The number of contacts in random fibre networks
2012
There is a wide range of materials that can be considered as nonwoven random networks of fibres. Such materials include glass-fibre mats, filters, various paper products and structural components of cells and tissues. The mechanical properties of these kinds of networks have been studied extensively for many decades. As many of such networks form more or less two-dimensional structures, they can, to a good approximation, be considered to consist of randomly distributed fibres or filaments connected at their crossings points. Recent development of the resolution of X-ray computed tomography have enabled imaging of the three dimensional structure of such materials with a resolution sufficient…
Pancreatic islets from non-heart beating donor pig: Two-layer preservation method in an in vitro porcine model
2011
Purpose Pancreata from non-heart beating donors could represent an unlimited source of islets if their cell viability can be efficiently preserved during the time necessary to process the organs by the use of a better solution of preservation compared to the classic University of Wisconsin solution. The aim of this study was to determine whether it is possible to obtain functioning “alive islets” from non-heart-beating donors by comparing, on a porcine model, the classic “UW ice-store” method with a two-layer cold storage method (TLM) using oxygenated Perfluorocarbons (PFC) and UW. Methods Whole pancreata were harvested from 20 NHBDs female pigs with similar characteristics and preserved fo…
Ischemic type biliary lesions in histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) preserved liver grafts.
2006
Ischemic type biliary lesions lead to considerable morbidity following orthotopic liver transplantation. The exact pathogenesis is unknown. One major hypothesis is that insufficient perfusion of the arterial vessels of the biliary tree, especially under perfusion with the high viscous University of Wisconsin solution, might be responsible for ischemic type biliary lesions. Due to low viscosity, HTK solution is reported to have a lower incidence of biliary complications. However, there is no data concerning ischemic type biliary lesions in HTK preserved livers. In this paper we report our results after orthotopic liver transplantation with special regard to ischemic type biliary lesions in …
The Use of Polyols in Pediatrics
1969
Children have a high demand of sugars or similar substances. These ought to be tolerable and easily utilized, furthermore palatable if given by mouth, and apt to supply a sufficient caloric intake. Often, carbohydrates are used as the only source of calories for ill children, e. g. in case of acute disturbances of the intestinal tract (caused by infection or incompatibility of food ingested, by malabsorption syndromes etc.) and in stress situations.
